    Roadrunner?

Has anyone any thoughts on the suitability of a roadrunner as a primary charge? I only see one in a quick search of the O&A, registered in 1976. As we all know, the standards of the College have changed since then.

On the one hand, it's a bird, and so ought to be suitable. On the other hand, it's a new world bird, which wouldn't have been known to Europeans in period.

Pennsic Heralds Point - Volunteers Needed
Pennsic Heralds' Point, as usual, will need volunteers this year!

First off, we are looking for heralds of ALL levels and talents.

If you're interested in consulting, we always have more submitters than we know what to do with. New to consulting? No problem. We've got lots of knowledgeable heralds who can help you out if you get stuck. And if you only like working on names or armory, we can set you up to work on only that type of submissions!

If your strength is conflict checking (but not working with submitters), we'd love to get you to help us double-check our work.

And, well... we _always_ need good paper pushers =)

If you're better at heraldic art, we've got a whole tent dedicated to our artists. For artists who don't have much training in the heraldic style, we are happy to give pointers. Or you can just start off by inking other artists' pencil drawings.

Not a big book heraldry person, but want to help anyway? We need volunteers to greet people as they come in and help organize the waiting line. And we need more volunteers to help check folks out after they've finished their submissions. (You do need to be a warranted herald or exchequer to do that job, though.) And we almost _always_ have coloring that needs to be finished (even at 11 at night!).

    Shifts and schedules )

By the way... we've MOVED this year. You'll need to look for us across from the bathhouse near the barn instead of over near the A&S tents.

I hope you'll consider volunteering with us at War this year. I look forward to seeing you there!

    Heraldic amusement
In response to a recent inquiry on an email list about blazoning a couple of possible designs, I used the following:
"Quarterly X and Y, an arrow fesswise between four widgets".
"<field>, on a bend sinister between two widgets a thingy".

    I then concluded by saying:
"Yes, I am resorting to highly technical terms here. ;-)"

Mixing names from 15th C Florence & Venice?
    Hi all,

I'm changing my persona to that of a Venetian lady in the first half of the fifteenth century. I scoured the St. Gabriel site and found a last name I absolutely adore (Morosini), but didn't care for any of the feminine first names. I did, however, find a first name from Florence (Pippa) which I fell in love with and a last name (Martelli) that I can tolerate.

My question is this: can I mix the Florentine first name with a Venetian last name or will that be rejected by the Laurel office because the names aren't from the same region?

Thanks in advance for your insight and advice!

    Byzantine name for Ireland
    Hello world!

I'm trying to find a good solid Byzantine name for an Irishman named Seamus. I've done some scouting around and I think that Iakobos Irlandikos might do the trick, but Irlandikos is modern Greek for "Irish". I can't find anything that will tell me what the Byzantines would have called Ireland--it's Hybernia in Latin, but would that translate over as Hybernikos/Ibernikos for the Byzantines? Also, can anyone point me to a good Byzantine name source online? Most of the ones I have found deal mostly in patronymics, so I'm not really sure if I have constructed the name properly.

    Thanks!

    Period Japanese-English dictionary?
    "Ask the LJ guru..."

I'm looking for a period (or as close as we can get to) Japanese-English dictionary, as I am searching for a period Japanese term for (appropriately enough) "herald." Using a modern online Japanese translator, I found several terms, including "denreisha," "furekomu" and "senkusha." But I have no idea if those words, with that meaning, date to period, and as this is an online translation site (http://www.dicts.info/2/english-japanese_romaji.php?word=herald&begin=Search), I'd like to find something a little more reliable. (Alternately, if there is ready evidence that the Japanese language has changed little enough that the modern translations are still valid, that would work too, although I'd be surprised.)

I have already sent this request to Solveig, and have not yet received a response, but I figure the more avenues of attack, the better. :-)

    Thanks in advance.

    Graphics help
I have a brief help request for all the wonderful heralds here. I am helping someone create a badge submission and he wants to use a marten as part of it. I can't draw beyond stick figures, so I usually use computer graphics for any heraldry work. However, I can't find an image of a marten that doesn't look like it was drawn by a one year-old.

Is there anyone who has a good computer image of a marten that they would not mind me using? If so, I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thank you all!

    Help Please?
    Hello!

I am passing along a request for one of the members of our local shire. She has been trying to get someone to look over her name and device for quite some time now, but it seems that our local herald has been AWOL for over 6 months, the person who held the position before her has had family medical issues that prevent her from helping in this circumstance, and the out of town person we had scheduled to make a consulting appearance at Tuesday's meeting was not able to make it and has not been able to reschedule. Apparently she has also tried to contact the Calontir Kingdom Herald with no response. All that to say that yes, this poor lady has tried the local channels with no success and is now -very- frustrated.

Can anyone help? Here is the information I have from an e-mail she sent me.

"As to the blazon of the device...the field is argent with a cross fluery quadrate gules centered upon it and in the center of the quadrate square, a cross and crosier (crook) saltire or. Forgive my poor, illiterate version of a blazon.

Please let me know if you received this email so I'll know you got it in a timely fashion. And please let me know what you find out and/or what I need to do next. I would love to get this registration business out of the way so I can start using my SCA name, device and badge for real. Who knew this process would be so complicated?!

Don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or need additional information. Again, many thanks for your kindness.

    Prayer Request for Scadian Family
Hakon (m.k.a. Mickey Radelt), 19 years old, was doing yard work this afternoon and was struck on the head by a tree branch. He was bleeding internally and they did emergency brain surgery to cauterize a blood vessel in his brain. He is currently in ICU. So far they are worried about his speech being slow, but they believe his surgery was successful.

Leoric (m.k.a. Merrick Radelt), 15 years old, is having knee surgery tomorrow afternoon. He injured his knee at a LARP last weekend.

Hakon is an adult heavy fighter and Leoric is the Northwoods Baronial Youth Boffer Champion as well as being a recipient of the Award of The Baton. Their parents are Lord Schwartz Wilhelm and Lady Petra both Heavy Fighters of Ironwolf. They are in the Midrealm.

This is cross-posted every place I can think of to post it!

UPDATE 3-30 11AM - from his Dad (Lord Schwartz Wilhelm)
Mick is currently sleeping.  He came through surgery well. He has a linear fracture on the left side, behind the ear going toward the top of the skull.  An artery in the subdural layer was cut by the fracture. This was the reason for the bleeding. They cauterized the bleeding artery and truncated it at the branch. After which they bled him, Actually, allowed the excess fluids to drain. The fracture is expected to heal on its own without complications. He was/is talking and all neurological indicators look very good for a full recovery.

    a couple of device questions
Hello all, I've been lurking for a couple of months and have plucked up the nerve to ask some questions at last!

I'm working on putting together a device at the moment. I've been checking oanda.sca.org and think that this doesn't conflict:

Argent, a serpent glissant azure, a chief azure

    Have I missed something?

(On a side note, this should be a white field with a wavy blue snake as per my icon with a blue chief at the top - is it blazoned correctly?)

Can a device conflict with a badge?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Laurel files - a question
What would people like to actually, physically see with the files? [info]sine_fergusson and I are trying to come up with some sort of video 'tour' of the files, but I am not sure if what I think should be shown is what others would like to see. To quote her:

Now some, well very few have seen just the scope of the files, some have an understanding, but not EVERYONE has seen it.
I thought maybe just an highlight of just what they look like, so everyone can see. Or would just shooting pictures and posting them to get an idea. I would record it with my camera and put it up on my YouTube channel. I'd keep it short as 10 mins is all that they want per video as it is.

    Anybody have suggestions or requests?

    Strawberry leaves - graphics?
    Greetings!

I have a plea for help from a fellow Artemisian. Our current Royals are stepping down in two weeks, and he has been asked to put strawberry leaves on their county coronets. Having just gotten the items back home from Estrella War, he has little time to do up designs.

I need some graphics that I can send him so he can design around their already rather ornate coronets. The Pennsic Traceable Art Project didn't have any strawberry leaves in it, that I could find, and I was unable to locate anything else on line while on the phone with him.

I do have Fox-Davies, and a couple of other books, that I can scan idividual bits from, but wanted to get a variety of graphics if possible.

    Any help appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!
