Greetings!

I'm new to this community and joined on a quest for lyrics. While discussing sci-fi filk with someone on-line, she asked if I could explain "The Cripple's Shield Wall" by Leslie Fish, since I used to be in the SCA. I can in vague terms, but it would help if I could send her the lyrics written down. Haven't been able to find it anywhere, and my copy of the song is on a very dead cassette tape.

Would appreciate it if someone could send me the lyrics, or a link to them.

In Service,
Brigid

Filk: The SCA Definition?

I got a discussion going over on filk about what the word "filk" means. This is not yet another "what is filk?" thread, but rather a point of order: see, in Lochac, I believe the word "filk" means what other people call a "parody", more or less what Weird Al Yankovic does in songs like Yoda or Like A Surgeon or Fat. Whereas, to the wider filking community, filk is the folksong of fandom: it doesn't have to be to the tune of some other song, and often isn't.

But I'm wondering if what I see as the Lochac SCA definition (filk = parody) is actually universal to the whole of the SCA, or whether we're in a linguistic minority within the SCA as we are in the wider fannish sense.

View Poll: The SCA Definition of Filk

I am in the East, but this is about us all. For quick reference, the BOD of the SCA has asked the Grand Council to see what the populace thinks of any kind of 'pay to play' type examples. A second letter revealed that the key question had to do with loyalty to household and kingdom and why the general populace did not feel that same loyalty to the corporation. There is even further clarification at this point. If you wanna read it, go look in the sca lj. , If you want the tune for this song, there is a YouTube vid of the Hoff doing it. :)

Anyway, it all came together in my head and is not perfect, but it makes me smile.

Looking for Meanin'
Mahin Banu, Selena Kaplan
TTO: Hooked on a feelin', Mark Jame

oogah-chocka oogah-chocka, oogah oogah oogah-chocka

First we pay the site fee, day board and for feast,
then non-member surcharge, that is our new beast.
Then you tell us “discuss ‘pay to play’”
I ask you, are your heads okay?

I-I-I, I’m looking for meanin',
You’re high in believing, that we need more to do

But if you want to know about our loyalties
BOD, just ask the question it has naught to do with fees
We are mouthy people, yammer all the time
certain subjects explode like a online mine.

Keyboard antics, when were snowed in home
Don’t need drama, thanks we make our own

I-I-I, I’m looking for meanin',
You’re high in believing, that we need more to do

A new flame war, research brushed aside,
lose all reason, and our tone gets snide,

I-I-I, I’m looking for meanin',
You’re high in believing, that we need more to do

A Rude Song About (And For) Heralds

This is a filk of The Last Saskatchewan Pirate by the Arrogant Worms.

The Last Saskatchewan Herald

Well, I used to be a newbie, had a lot to fill my days,
A-cooking and a-costuming and archery displays,
But one September morning as I sat amid the crowd,
A double-peer espied me and she told me, "Gosh, you're loud".
A voice like I'd been blessed with was a useful tool
To let it stay unutilised, I'd surely be a fool!
I ought to see if anyone could fit me in a role
Confucius say, no man can dig himself out of a hole!

Then I thought, who gives a damn if there are tender ears around.
I'm gonna be a herald and make loud, obnoxious sounds!

    'Cause it's an oh-yay, oy-vey, mispronounce a name,
Lose your registration and never take the blame
And it's an oh hey, no way, every man look out,
When you see the golden trumpets and you hear the mighty shout.

Well I learned the way to run a court, and let my voice be heard
Occasion'ly the king would talk, but really that's absurd
The heralds are the royal voice, all eyes are shining onto
And kings are gone in half a year, so we do what we want to.
A superduke politely tried to register a name,
We gave him books in Greek and Dutch and said, "Just play the game"
Fill out your forms in triplicate, be sure it's fully checked,
It shouldn't take us more than half a decade to reject.

Well, Blazon is our language, it's a form of mangled French,
You'd think it was invented to impress a comely wench.
But listen up, I'll tell you all the reason why it's used:
It's 'cause it makes it easier to keep you all confused!
A herald's staff, a tabard green, and nerds for company
We sit around inventing rules to thwart the royalty.
Your favourite charge is disallowed, by Laurel Queen's decree;
If you wanna get your coat of arms, you gotta get by me!

Well the herald life's appealing but it's also pretty hard.
You have to watch the fights and write the winner on a card.
And when you call a Gaelic name to combat for the round,
You need to gargle gravel first, to get the proper sound.
Now winter is upon us and the tourney season's done,
A herald runs the risk of doing stuff that isn't fun:
Be sure to keep your head down when Laurel goes berserk,
Or else she'll put you on her staff to drown in paperwork!

Hey, hi, how are ya. I live in the Province of Malagentia, up in the East, where the weather can get--shall we say--somewhat unpredictable. We have a big ol' shindig up here every year what's called Great Northeastern War (formally) or S&M (formerly). Well the fourteenth annual one of these saw what we Malagentians refer to as "weathah". LOTS of "weathah", ayuh. Well a bunch of my stuff got wrecked as a result and it made me realize that lots of other people probably did as well. So, in an attempt to make lemonade out of lemons (and LOTS of water), I came up with this little ditty.

Tune: "All for Me Grog", Traditional

All From the Rain
by Lady Gormlaith inghen ui Suillebhan (or, "The Bard Formerly Known as Cara")
Permission given to perform with credit given; if you make money doing so I want some.

(Refrain:)

It's all from the rain,
The soggy soggy rain,
It's all from the rain of Malagentia!
S and M, X-I-V
You took ev'rything from me
And across the Eastern ocean it's a-floatin'!

Oh where are me shoes,
Me bonny bonny shoes?
They're gone from the rain of Malagentia!
In a puddle they did drown
And they shrunk five sizes down
Now my feet are holding out for better weather!

(Refrain)

Oh where is me car,
Me bonny bonny car?
It's gone from the rain of Malagentia!
Buried all of the tires
In the muck and in the mire
Now the roof is holding out for better weather!

(Refrain)

Oh where is me tent,
Me bonny bonny tent?
It's gone from the rain of Malagentia!
Far away, watch it float
Like a ten-by-ten foot boat
Now my gear is holding out for better weather!

(Refrain)

Oh where is me garb,
Me bonny bonny garb?
It's gone from the rain of Malagentia!
Wore my best leather pants
Oh they didn't stand a chance
Now me arse is holding out for better weather!

(Refrain)

Oh where is me lord,
Me bonny bonny lord?
He's gone from the rain of Malagentia!
Oh the mud rose so high
That it covered up his eyes
Now his brow is holding out for better weather!

(Refrain)

Oh where is me wife,
Me bonny bonny wife?
She's gone from the rain of Malagentia!
Oh the wind caught her gown
And it blew her upside-down,
Now her legs are holding out for better weather!

(Refrain)

(Slow down for this bit, extra-dramatic-like)

And where is our King?
Our bonny bonny King?
He's gone from the rain of Malagentia!
(spoken:)And we all heard him say...
(sung)"Tell my wife, whom I love,
I shall always..." This is dedicated to all those pillocks who can't stop complaining about everything in the SCA, but somehow feel that their complaints are of such inestimable value that they needn't also go to the trouble of fixing what they hate or, better still, learning to live with it.

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful court.
That started right at six P M,
And would not be too short.

The king was a mighty fighten’ man,
The queen his fair consort.
Five peerages were set that day,
For a four hour court, a four hour court...<r>
The heralds started getting hoarse,
Their voices had to mend.
After thirty AoAs it seemed that:
The awards would not end;
The awards would not end.

The court took until ten P M their
Majesties cut it “short”.
With Pelicans, the Laurels too,
His Majesty, and the Queen,
The royal guard, the heralds mute and without voice,
Here at the Birka Court.

If you didn’t figure out the tune, it is to the Gilligan’s Island Theme Song.
Lucan himself used to play Dr. Frank N. Furter. Sadly all the armor was put away already and it was a spontaneous performance so I had to pantomime the "tap dance".

Hi, I am really happy to have found you guys. Filk is a dirty job, but someone has to do it. Who better than those of us who enjoy it? I wrote this last year for Pennsic.

Location and back story: Here in the East there is a large armed force known as the Northern Army. It is a loosely associated (until it hits the battlefield) group of households, baronies, and individuals. There is a kind of camaraderie within and a particular brand of harsh-but-nurturing love.

The original Piece is the 23d Psalm.

The Northern Psalm

The North is my Army; it brings me joy
It inspires me to deeds of greatness
It teases me when I am stupid
It restoreth the fun.
It leadeth me down the path of mean but funny for its own sake
Yea though I wade through the tides of bardic suck
I’ll tolerate no stupid; I am Northern
Its wordfame and rattan comfort me
It layeth down the smack upon mine enemies providing skald fodder.
It singeth to me to make me smile; It bringeth me home.
Surely stories and songs will be heard all the days of my life
And I will dwell in the Northern Army forever.

Baroness Selena D’Ambra July 2005.
Filked this one up for a Bardic Tournament in August '05--won Best Song or Instrumental. It's a little long, but I don't know how to make an LJ cut yet. Oh well. Oh yeah, you'd better be pretty versatile and able to breathe in interesting ways if you want to sing it as a solo. And in this version, "Smeagol" is pronounced using 3 syllables, not 2.

NUMENOREAN RHAPSODY
(to the tune of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody)

(Frodo) Is this my real life?
Is this high fantasy?
Caught in a nightmare...
(Sam) Full of Nazgul and Istari.

(Frodo) Look all around, see everyone's hunting me...
I'm just a hobbit, people make fun of me,
(Sam) 'Cause I'm (Frodo) Easy come, easy go, three feet high, furry toes,
Any way, my sword glows, doesn't really matter to me...
To me.

Bilbo, just left the Shire,
Don't know what's happened to me, since we met that guy in Bree,
Bilbo, they all want my Ring,
But NOW I've got to THROW it ALL AWWAAAYYY...

Samwise, oooOOOooo,
Didn't mean to make you cry,
If Gandalf isn't back this time tomorrow,
Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters.

Farewell to Lorien,
Sang a dirge for Mithrandir, got attacked by Boromir,
Goodbye, everybody, now I've got to go,
Gotta TAKE the Ring to MORDOR BY MYSELFFF...

Samwise, oooOOOooo,
I don't want to die,
Some times I wish the Ring had never come to MEE!!

(air guitar by Gandalf)

(Sam) I see a little shadow crawling down a cliff,
(Frodo) It has eyes, it has eyes, maybe used to be a hobbit,
(Gollum) Yellow Face and White Face, very, very frightening me!

(Frodo) Oh Smeagol!
I just happened to be looking at various communities and spotted this one, and from the looks of it you just started. So I thought I'd say "Hi".

I was quite active in SCA filk in the late 70s and 80s, but have only been sporadically involved of late (in the SCA as a whole, not just SCA filk). So if you're looking for some specific SCA Filk from the old days, I may be the dinosaur that can help you. For anything more recent - not so much. I'm still into filk at SF conventions, but out here in California there isn't anywhere near the SCA/SF crossover at filksings that there used to be back east 20 years ago so I don't hear much of the new stuff.
