Rattan and India

Someone pointed this out on the Atenveldt mailing list, and it made me laugh. An official Indian government press release lists the SCA as one of the world's major consumers of rattan. (See the third paragraph from the bottom).

A little "peer reviewing" please?

I posted an article to my LJ that started life as an advice email to a newcomer. I have since been encouraged to submit the article to my shire's newsletter, but as it sits it's really just informal advice. Could I ask the community to take a look and give me advice and/or corrections so I can decide whether I want to submit this to my group at large?

I give you:
More than you ever wanted to know about the kilt in the 1590s

Thanks in advance!

Published music question

Is there a central repository of knowledge somewhere that lists, in one place, all of the medieval and Renaissance music that's been published in redacted editions in the last century or so?

If I were to, oh, win the lottery and buy a 16th-century book of music containing masses, motets, and madrigals by Dowland, des Prez, and Dufay, where would the best place be for me to go to see if any of those pieces have been published in a modern edition?

(It's a lovely book, worth buying just to look at, but I wonder if it'd be worth my while to digitize and promulgate it. I'd hate to go to all that trouble if it's already been done....)

Period recipes that I can make Gluten Free

Hi all!

I've started a little project. I put a call out to my local list and got no response, so maybe you all can help me.

I'm looking for period recipes. Really period recipes from all over that I can turn into gluten free "period" recipes for a feast book.

I've got bread recipes, a roman stew, and modified a bunch of middle eastern stuff, but I personally have very few European period recipes other than what's online.

Do you have a favourite you've used at a feast or packed up for an event that you'd be willing to share? When this is done, I won't be looking to make a profit, just cover printing and shipping for anyone who is interested.

The Gluten Free Feast Book should be done by next summer if I get enough submissions. You will get credit for the original recipe.

Please email me at my LJ User name at yahoo dot com

YIS,

Lady Lina

Help--trying to find a potter from Pennsic

I just broke my partner's favorite cup.

We bought it from Pennsic a couple of years ago.

The bottle of one of the remaining cups has a circular stamp with the words Clark and Canada.

I remember the shop having a pun name, and being right next to Dark Victory Armory at the top of run stone hill, where you pass on the way to the belly dance tent...

Does anyone have any idea what I am babbling about, and know if they have a web presence, or know how to get in touch with them to try to buy another. I do not really expect we can afford Pennsic anytime soon, and I know Mark will be very unhappy without his cup =\

Any help or tips or memories would be very useful and appreciated.

Duke Morguhn Sheridan

Morguhn Sheridan, (mka John Glenn) succumbed on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 8:58pm to injuries sustained from a fall from his roof on Sunday September 21, 2008. He is survived by his Ladies, Duchess Rowan de al Garnison and Duchess Meirwen uerch Owein, other mundane family members, numerous Squires, Men-at-Arms, Cadets, pages, household members and all those whose life was touched by him.

Morguhn served the Society with his every fiber and was an example to all who knew and met him. He was always seen helping, schlepping and washing when he was not retaining, guarding, fighting or fencing. And in recent years it seemed that if he was not sitting the throne, he was standing behind it as either Queen's Rapier Champion or King's Heavy Weapon's Champion. Even in the end he served, having given all he could to the world, down to the marrow of his bones.

His SCA Peer Card had the following biography for him:

"Morguhn Sheridan has sat a throne a total of 7 times in 2 kingdoms with 3 different ladies--in short, he is skilled in higher math. When asked once why he wore favors from more than one lady he replied, "A good man needs only one lady to carry him to the heights--those of us less gifted require more inspiration to achieve anything at all." While he has a number of awards (including an AoA where he was noted more for doing the dishes than for fighting), his knighting by Gavin II and Sedalia II at Pennsic XVII, his Jewel of AEthelmearc from James I and Elina I, and his Keystone from Andrew and Alexandra mean the most to him."

I am honored to have been able to call myself his student, his cadet, his squire and then in August, when elevated to the Order of the Pelican, his fellow Peer. He was my Duke, my Knight, my Don, my Pelican, my teacher. But above all else, he was my friend. He taught me more about doing what needs to be done, because it needs to be done, than anyone else I know. You do not just sit back and think “oh someone else will get up and go wash dishes. Someone will set up the list field. Someone will think to do that.” Because, you know what… you are someone. He taught me the hardest lesson of all… if you can’t be noticed and acknowledged for your actions in your own right, what makes you think a bit of regalia will make their notice valid? It will be a false honor. Strength comes from perseverance and continuing to do what you do and what you know needs to be done. Fighting your own fights does not make you weak. But at the same time, there is no shame in calling on resources when you have them.

I learned from him that you do what needs to be done, and if you believe that what you did is right, do not be ashamed of it, but be prepared for any consequences that come and give fair warning so those that may have to handle the fall out are adequately prepared. He often heard me say “Sir, I’m not sorry but…”

And from him I learned one phrase to be proud of… “I am Ekaterina Volkova and all that that entails”.
Words cannot convey the loss I, my household siblings, his Ladies and the rest of the Known World feel at his passing.
I mourn the loss of my dear friend and hope that one day I can be even 1/10 of the Peer Morguhn Sheridan was.

35th King of the East
27th Count of the East
40th King of the East
8th Duke of the East
43rd King of the East
9th Territorial Prince of AEthelmearc
9th Viscount of Æthelmearc
12th Territorial Prince of AEthelmearc
3rd King of AEthelmearc
8th King of AEthelmearc
11th Jewel of Æthelmearc
Knight (East)
Master of the Pelican (AEthelmearc)
Patent of Arms (East)
Companion of the White Scarf (AEthelmearc)
Companion of the Millrind (AEthelmearc)
Companion of the Golden Alce (AEthelmearc)
Companion of the Sycamore (AEthelmearc)
Companion of the Keystone (AEthelmearc)
Companion of the Tygers Combatant (East)
Companion of the Silver Crescent (East)
Companion of the Golden Rapier (East) [Principal]
Award of Arms (East)
Companion of the Guardsman (East)
Sigil of Æthelmearc
Companion of the Burdened Tyger (East)
Friend of the Windmill (Barony of Delftwood, AEthelmearc)

There will be a calling hours, followed by memorial service on Saturday, September 27, 2008 at Dimbleby Friedel Williams and Edmunds, 365 W. Main St., West Winfield, NY. Calling hours will be from 1-4:45. At 4:45 his Masonic brothers will hold a memorial service, followed by a short religious service, Baron Boris Dragonsbane officiant (mka Rev. Michael Reynolds). The Masonic lodge, a 1/2 block from the funeral home, has graciously offered to host a pot luck. Food may be left there at any time starting at 1 PM and our sisters in Eastern Star will make sure it is taken care of until we can gather there.

Goodbye, Boss. You will be missed.

Baroness Ekaterina Volkova, OP

What Do You Think?

I am event steward for an upcoming large event in Atlantia. We expect 800 people.

I have a request from an SCA member who is a representative for one of the home cosmetics companies to merchant at our event. She would only display items that would be of value at events . . . lotions, cleansers, sun screen and so on while taking appointments for cosmetics consults out of the public eye.

I have my own thoughts on the matter but would welcome input from others before I make a decision.

Would you welcome a merchant selling overtly modern items at an SCA event?

OR

Would you find it offensive in some way, even if the items would be of interest and use to those attending the event?

Or . . . what?

Med/Ren books for sale

We've gotten to the point where we have to sell off some of our library, and there's a fair amount from our Med/Ren studies in and since college, that it's time to let go of. The books range in topic from studies of the study of history itelf, to the Medieval era, to assorted topics, places and ages within the Renaissance. Some books identify as being about the Middle Ages in general, though for some books that just means Medieval, and for some it means Medieval and Renaissance, both. (If you'll forgive me, I'll be cross-posting the whole list in both Rennie and SCA communities, because there are many people with cross-contextual interest.) Before we post to Amazon, I thought I'd stick a book-list here.
For those into handcrafted items....

Pray, pardon this interruption...

There is a team forming up on Etsy, an online marketplace and community for buyers and sellers of handmade goods, that may be of interest. Presently, the SCAEtsy team is unofficial, and is being discussed about here:
http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=5021491&page=1

There is currently a small handful of SCAdian merchants signed up for the Yahoogroup e-list, and this could easily bloom. Etsy is aimed at promoting the sale of handmade goods and sale of supplies for handmade goods - not as an auction house, but moreso as a series of shops run by the individual artisans and suppliers themselves.

If you know of anyone who may be interested in joining this "street team", please pass the word along.

Thank you.

-Kayleigh McWhyte, OL

Looking for Re-enactor snailmailpals

Hello,

This is not 100% on-topic, but I hope this is allowed :)

I am looking for snail mail pals among SCA. I love writing letters, and some of my present pals don't understand anything when I am babbling about costuming, illumination, weapons etc. That's why I'd love to get few more pals who would share at least few similar interests :)

I bet you want to know something about me, right? I am nearly 30yrs old creature/female. I am Finn, but last 3 years I have been living in Scotland and I might be moving to Florida next year. That's why people from Florida/South US are esp welcome to contact me ;). I normally write at least 3 pages, sometimes nearly 10. I also reply pretty fast, because I don't have anything else to do at work than write letters ;).
Aaanyway, I have been member of SCA and other re-enactiing groups over 11 years now. I enjoy nearly every aspect, but at the moment I am mostly into illumination, weapons, costuming and singing (well, with my voice it sound more like crows that angels :D). I have been also doing some illustrations for Baelfyr and dragon's tale (European SCa-mags)
Outside SCA I enjoy reading, dark music, photographing, postcrossing, making art, WoW and dancing.

I don't really have requests for new pals. All I hope you to be is pretty regular/fast replier, openminded and willing to write real letter by pen and paper :) I don't care about your genre, age, religion, sexual orientation as long you don't judge me because I am atheist and openminded girl :)
anyone interested? please, leave a comment :)

Ten Reasons to go to Canterbury Faire

1. No mudde. no duste, no venymous fauna! We still enjoy mild weather, a
site with plenty of grass and shade, and a convivial atmosphere.

2. Canterbury Faire XLIV will be bigger than ever, with more days, more
time and more relaxing.

2. The Mangy Mongol is the best Tavern in the Knowne World (by Royal
Appointment).

3. Our steadfast
transport marshal can arrange shuttles between airport or billet and
site for a modest fee.

4. All sorts of combat activities for heavies, plumes, and fencers,
including war scenarios, tourneys, Pas d'Armes and Baroness's Rapier
Tournament. Also, there are target archery competitions for all
experience levels.

6. Fine A & S classes and workshops for many interests held throughout
the event.

7. A wide variety of diversions, including a Grand Ball, Peasants'
Dance, Village Games, wrestling, Hafla, Equestrian display and
Half-Circle Theatre. Heavy purses are cheerfully lightened at our
fantastic indoor market.

8. Superlative feast!*

9. $NZ160 Early Bird fee includes meals, souvenir T-shirt, feast and all
the fun you can handle.

10.
Greetings!
In my kingdom I have to keep a roster of the officers in my region. This roster includes the usual address book stuff but also membership numbers, exp dates, and warrant exp dates.

My question is, has anyone made an excel sheet in some sort of fashion like this? If you have may I use it?

I already looked in the MSO templates and didn't see one I liked.
Thanks :D
