memories and itunes is evil
I don't know how I ended up on itunes searching but it brought back a flood of memories. Back in the day, when I was still starry eyed with the SCA, getting ready for an event was an event in itself. Packing armor, shields , swords (both live steel and rattan) the tents, pavilion , break down table, director's chairs etc. It depended what vehicle I had at the time, the truck and van were easy, the car was a little more tricky. Then it was finishing that last bit of new garb and swearing that you would never do it again. Then the drive and getting away from the 20th century, the long hours drive sometimes. NOW here is where itunes comes in, all of the drive was filled with music meant to put you in the mood. Lot's of celtic stuff, SCA filk, and my two Never-Leave-Home-Without-Them, Meg Davis's Captain Jack and the Mermaid and Celtic Stone cassettes . So, I was feeling nostalgic and having lost those tape long ago, decided to see if they are still around. Happy to say they are still around and now have been downloaded and placed on CDs. I can remember pulling up the Troll with the tapes still blaring, then it was usually off to set up camp in the dark (again something I swore never again) then into garb and grab my horn, then off to the camp fires. Waking up with the dew heavy on the grass and tent, coffee first at the tavern. Ok, so I am kind of excited about coming back. time for pain meds Current Mood: nostalgic | 1:36 pm [dwer]

Eastern Crown -- any other results?
Sir Edward the Gray has won his first Eastern Crown. Sir Edward defeated Duke Lucan in the finals. Sir Edward over Count Griffyth in one semifinal and Lucan over Duke Gregor in the other. Any other results? OK, here's Ealdormere: Lord Quilliam for Baroness Dagmar in Ealdormere. IIRC, Quilliam is the first Crown winner to come from the Youth Combat ranks, and quite possibly our youngest Crown winner. | 4:42 pm [liamstliam]

Sir Edward Grey is the new prince of the East
Sir Edward the Gray over Duke Lucan for the EK crown. From one of my dear Ealdormerean friends: Lord Quilliam for Baroness Dagmar in Ealdormere. Flash Photography at SCA events
Greetings, I am curious as to local custom/law in regards to photography, expecially flash photography around the Knowne World. In particular, I am curious as to which kingdoms have laws against flash photography in Crown Tournament. I'm working on an article and some insight would be fantastic. -Eirik Andersen www.tworavens.org/gallery | | Tuesday, October 20th, 2009 | 6:50 pm [tudorpot]

Book sale
I was browsing this site and found a number of books that might be of interest to SCA members. The books are on sale for 50% off the listed price. I have listed a few titles and descriptions as a teaser- there are many that would be useful additions to your library. WOOLLEY, Linda. Medieval Life and Leisure in the Devonshire Hunting Tapestries. (London): V&A Publications, (2002), large quarto, 117pp., illustrations unpaginated. First Edition. These four tapestries with an illuminating text offer a window into the vanished world of the Late Middle Ages. They provide a vivid picture of the hunt in all its forms: falconry, hunting of otter, boar, deer and bear, etc. The tapestries also tell a huge amount about medieval dress that provides a rich repository of costume and textile history. All four tapestries are illustrated in beautiful color in fold-out pages. Very fine. (14451) $45.00 ( temptation ) | | Monday, October 19th, 2009 | 2:12 pm [panzygmunt]

SCA, large metro areas, and the carless
As one who is involved in the SCA in a large metro area and does not own a car, I'm curious as to how other areas (NYC, LA, San Francisco, Chicago, etc.) deal with this issue for meetings, practices, and especially events. How do you keep your city-dwelling members who often don't own cars involved and active? | | Sunday, October 18th, 2009 | 9:52 pm [etfb]

What Is An Event?
Someone on the Lochac-wide mailing list a little while back posted a description of a typical event in some kingdom or other, emphasising how different it was. So I feel inspired to ask: what is a typical SCA event in your kingdom? Comment with the name of your kingdom (and maybe the mundane geography, because we Australians get all your teensy-tiny little states mixed up, and some of your kingdoms are about the size of a medium-sized sheep station) and tell us what it means to you when you're off to an SCA event. In Lochac Dexter (the western part of Lochac, ie Australia; I don't have any experience with Lochac Sinister = New Zealand), the typical event is a catered feast on a Saturday night, usually with a combined heavy and fencing tourney on the Saturday and maybe also the Sunday. A normal feast has enough food to amply feed the forty to a hundred people who attend, and there's generally dancing and baronial or royal court if the pointy hats are in attendance. Court, being held between removes (courses), is not usually long or arduous, and it's unusual for anyone but smokers and real die-hard curmudgeons to take the trouble to skip out on it. Most of our halls allow candles on the tables, and look reasonably good once we have banners on the walls and the lights out. Being a nation founded by criminals rather than religious nuts, we don't have many weird laws about alcohol, so a dry site is almost unheard-of; people bring their own cider or sometimes beer, and there's a thriving brewing community. As a bard, I often have the opportunity to sing a song, as do others; entertainment is rarer now than it was when I first joined, but you can usually count on a little. The typical camping event, meanwhile, tends to be held on long weekends (Americans call these "three day weekends", but I recommend the Australian terminology!) because travel is a serious business in a country with the population of New York and the area of the lower forty-eight states. If one were to run a camping event in Mordenvale, say, it would be nice for people from Rowany (two hours away), Politarchopolis (five hours away) and River Haven/St Florians (eight or more hours away) to be able to come, so having it on a long weekend makes a lot of difference. We usually have these on private farms or, in the case of the largest one, Rowany Festival, at a succession of venues able to fit well over a thousand people. We bring tents, pitch them in some sort of logical arrangement leaving a central area for the tourney field, merchants and tavern. Again, the lack of prohibition and cultural alcophobia means people are permitted to drink in moderation, and it's unusual to see anyone behaving in an antisocial way as a result (though there are usually headaches each morning). The gum trees and kangaroos probably don't look all that medieval, but they're just like glasses and modern haircuts and the occasional pair of black jeans and Doc Martins: we edit them out of our perception and carry on. Again, these events usually have courts, but they're nothing to be afraid of, and people don't skip them the way I hear is done in other kingdoms. The last time we had a court go on for more than a few hours, the king in question (a Westie; this was before we became a kingdom ourselves) was so unpopular that people invoke him as a bogeyman. There are other events: collegia (usually not requiring medieval garb) and archery and fighter training and so on, but those are what we mean when we talk about events. So what about the rest of the Known World? I'm interested to see how much diversity there is. | | Saturday, October 17th, 2009 | 4:33 pm [oldwolf]

Thunder's Ride
Thunder's Ride With a crash like thunder, Valhalla's gates fly open, The sound of hoofbeats as the Valkyries ride. Down the shaking branches of Yggdrasil, To Midgard's autumn they fly. Past mountain and desert, storm and sea, They ride towards their goal. For a royal knight with pelican's grace, By a common threat laid low. Through family and friends, mooring their loss, To the fallen knights side they come. Her sword in her hand, for fighting she fell Her life's journey sadly done. The Valkyries salute, and hold out their hands, By mortal eyes unseen, the knight does stand. On cat-light feet, eyes now open and bright, Towards Valhalla's gates she rides. A kingdom is cast in sorrow, the Known World weeps, A merry and wise Duchess lost to us how? But in the sky, though the Worldtree's boughs, Sir Kolfinna rides, a Valkyrie now. Sad News - Duchess Kolfinna of Caid
For those who don't know, I play in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). During my time in California, I counted this young woman as my friend. My son fought in and was her Champion (in youth combat). This spring Duchess Kolfinna ("Kitty") fought along side me and the fencers of my adopted home of "The Kingdom of Meridies" at the recent Gulf Wars event in Mississippi. Long before becoming a knight in the SCA, Sir Kolfinna got her start in martial activites on the rapier field. In sadness, HL John James MacCrimmon Forwarded by request---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Lorissa (Lora) <lorissais@...> Date: Thu, Oct 1, 2009 at 11:56 AM Please cross post: It is with deep regret and much sorrow that after getting permission from Sven, I pass on that Duchess Kolfinna will loose her brave fight with H1N1 today, October 1st, 2009. We all feel a great loss but Kolfinna's family asks that her friends refrain from coming up to the hospital. There will be a memorial at Great Western War and there will be more information on that and final arrangements posted on the website later http://www.kolfinna.sca-caid.org/ Thank you Viscountess Lorissa du Griffin, OP Chamberlain to TRMs Edward II & Mora II King & Queen of Caid Current Mood: crushed | 8:18 am [carrot_khan]

Sifting for History
Greetings all, I was wondering if anyone here might remember an event that happened many years ago. Somewhere in Outland's history is a story of how Marcus the Vintner liberated the Big Green Lady of the East. To wit - he got a signed charter for ownership of Staten Island and the Statue of Liberty. The story featured the Kings of both the Outlands and the East, but no dates as to when it happened - only that it happened somewhere in the East Kingdom. The date range I have for this possible event is somewhere between June 1986 (first king of the Outlands) and May 2002, the time of King Bela I, who commissioned the story be written down to preserve for posterity. However, no one can remember when it happened or be able to tell me whether or not it truly happened. Marcus the Vintner is no longer active in the Society. Does anyone remember witnessing this? Seeing the signed charter? X-posted to sca_ika. Current Mood: determinedCurrent Music: Scooby-Do | | Monday, September 28th, 2009 | 8:01 am [mame_maebdh] |

Viking Longship
Hello everyone, for my world civilizations class I am supposed to make a historically accurate Viking ship. I'd like to make a longship, but I'm having no luck finding tutorials for models , so I'd be very grateful if someone could direct me to the proper place. I'd like to make it out of wood, it doesn't have to float. If you have information about making any other type of Viking ship (even the smaller ones used for every day use) it would be great. I just need to make some sort of ship. Thanks! | | Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009 | 8:45 pm [kragore]
