    Artwork of the Day
Every day the Met has an Artwork of the Day. About a third of them are pre 1600 works. One of the best things about it is that if you click though it has a lovely zoom feature to really get a good close up view of details.

I started an LJ feed for it last year. It perodicly blanks out past feeds im not sure why.

Here are examples of works from the past month.

    Saint Barbara, ca. 1490

I am sure someone else has posted this
Interesting article here on medieval weaponry.

Mods - I will remove if inapproiate or I get too many (and I decide how many is too many) slams. Amusement is far too rare these days.

This morning I read a perfectly lovely post of praise that had found its way into a snark community for lack of a better outlet.  It seems that I was not by any means the only person who had never until then heard of [info]sca_goodness or [info]sca_praise, and so I thought it only right to advertise these communities (again?) here today.

But do remember to write in your award recommendations first...  ;>

There's a new SCA list created a few minutes ago over on Yahoo Groups. Inter-Kingdom, everyone welcome. (I'm not the list owner, just wanted to let people know.)

    Link: SCA Recipes

Description from the group sign up page: "This is not meant to replace any existing cooking lists. This group is for recipes of all kinds, but emphasis on recipes for dishes that can be cooked on site, or cooked beforehand and refrigerated/frozen, then reheated on site. This is NOT a medieval recipes group, although period recipes are certainly welcome, as are all non-SCA recipes!"

    pattern advice
Gentles, I'm a longtime SCAdian and an experienced seamstress. Ordinarily, I design my own garb patterns. But I find myself short of time and motivation, and long on need for garb. My persona is 14th century Mongolian, but I'm considering branching out in the clothing department. I'm really looking for a few nice things to wear (a dress? maybe a bliaut or surcoat? a kirtle?), and a few comfortable things to wear (with an archery friendly flavor and design - pants/tights and tunic/jerkin with hood?).

So then. Who is your favorite purveyor of period patterns? I know about folkwear, but suspect they aren't all that period. The period factor is not of primary importance to me, but I've been in this game half my life. There is no fantasy garb happening here.

Online retailers are best. I'm located in Denver, CO.

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

    Rapier videos
Hello! I had a question. In my local area there is nobody doing rapier. I had started learning ages ago, but then moved to a place where there is only heavy fighting. I have a few people interested in learning with me, and have purchased A Duellist's Companion by Guy Windsor. However, this is currently our only resource, and I was wondering if there were any videos online showing any SCA rapier practice. I have found some on youtube, but they seem more focused on just videotaping the fights rather than actual instruction. Does anyone know of anything like this? Thank you.

    Period duct tape type material
There is a rumor of a duct tape type material that would have been available in period. Has anyone heard of such a substance? If so, can you point me in the general direction of reading material/research?

    Thanks in advance,

Thoughts on the topic of "preserving the atmosphere"

    ETA:
Please note that this essay has nothing to do with global warming, even if it is dealing with a lot of hot air.

A friend does work to bring period music to the SCA. Their budget precludes the expense of obtaining replica instruments of the period, and what they use often requires a "technical assist" to be heard. The issue of "non-period instruments" and amplification were being discussed because they were concerned about offending sensibilities. I gave a tacit response that has been "policy" of our village in the past.

(Gentle reader, if you take exception to the following, take a powder and then let's talk. Have your dux call upon my noyan, and we'll raze your city in the morning.)

We are all collectively creating a mutual illusion of another time and place. Some are striving for an intense level of accuracy that will pass close inspection by academic authorities. For other things we do our best to disguise or camouflage so as to limit the disruptive impact on the senses. At the very least, we ask each other not to deliberately call attention to things that break the 'spell.'

I am an amateur magician, and understand the uses of misdirection in the art of illusion. It would spoil the effect if I kept drawing your attention to the hand that was "working the trick" instead of the other hand, now wouldn't it? There would be no magic. It would be as fascinating as watching a man chop wood. With a chainsaw.

The success in creating the mutual illusion is dependent on at least two parts; our willingness to believe (suspend disbelief), but more so our individual and collective efforts that grant us mutual ownership (enfranchisment.) The later is a strong motivator to stay engaged with the activity and also to propel it forward, keeping it pumped with our energy. Enthusiasm can be infectious, a viral vital avocation.

In all honesty, the possibility of recreating any ancient work today to exact detail is limited by the fact that we are not living in that time, or working with materials of that day. We are often compelled to mix media to accomplish anything (e.g. I could tell stories in Arabic, but who would understand them?) A period song played on a hand crafted instrument with nylon strings; a hand lettered and illustrated scroll on modern vellum; the list can be endless.

Therefore, let me speak to three degrees of tolerance in our illusion (kind of like close-up magic, parlor magic, and stage magic) based on distance for discerning details. That would be microscopic, the two-year-old-free-range-limit (about 10 feet or three MOM-steps), and bow-shot or battlefield range. Leave it to the presenter to chose the range of observation to be fair.

Which leads to the matter of tolerance of behavior. Perhaps the Almighty makes the young of the species cute so they are not killed out of hand for bad behavior? We often grant special license to Tyros (Newcomers) to make mistakes (just as we did, too.) Often that period is made easier to bear for the Tyro by aiding them in the first steps of the journey (mentoring, loaning them a bit of garb; they can be so self-conscious when just starting out. I was, too.) However, that license expires and is not renewable.

Being an old-timer (who, me?) bears a special burden, because they become the models of behavior by virtue of, well, age. Off-hand remarks, petty peccadilloes, sniping snarks, and ass-holier-than-thou demeanor too quickly are adopted as "The Way It Should Be." (Been Dur. Done dat. Had to clean it up.)

To bring this to a close, it is OUR magic. WE BELIEVE it. WE make it. We are invested, and WE enjoy the dividends. It grows because WE INCLUDE and TOLERATE others. WE ACT accordingly to preserve that magic for ourselves AND OTHERS, without let or hindrance.

    Swan marks
I am looking for the swan mark used by Elizabeth I or earlier. I have found several other known royal marks, but they are later (George III). I am also trying to track down any reference to chains being used to mark/adorn royal swans.

    Thanks in advance,

    The Blade Identification Project
A while back I asked about how to identify whether one rapier blade was legal or not, and by extension, how to identify any given blade. I didn't
get much response. So I want to put together a visual identification
guide that matches up with the current Appendix 5.

To make this happen, I need pictures of SCA rapier blades. If you have a blade on the current Appendix 5 (or even if it's not on the list, if you
believe it's in circulation but no longer legal), I would love the
    following:

    - Overall picture of blade, if an unusual shape
    - Close-up picture of any identifying stamps or markings (usually to
    identify maker)
    - Close-up picture of forte of blade, or any unique features
    - Measurements - width and thickness at forte and tip at least, and
any other measurements unique to the blade

Pictures are best of the blade alone, with a white background. If
accurate measurements can't be made, putting a ruler alongside the
blade in the pictures will help. If you can't supply all of the above,
    anything would help.

I will do the legwork of organizing everything and making it all look
pretty. Send pictures in the best quality possible. And, though it
goes without saying, be very specific as to which blade manufaturer
and model you are supplying pictures for.

Please feel free to forward this post as desired. Send pictures
directly to me, so it doesn't get spammed to everyone.

    Thanks everyone.

    Portable sewing machines?
Has anyone come across a DECENT hand held or portable sewing machine? All the ones I've heard about are crummy and break in a few rounds if they even make it that far. I was looking for one to take to SCA events and conventions for repair work and whatnot but I can't find one worth getting. Does a decent one exist?

    Rabbi meets the Queen
I thought this was interesting because as a Jewish SCAdian, this question comes up quite a bit.

    Video behind the cut )

ETA: My original intent for posting it here was not so much the fact that she didn't shake his hand but how he approached and walked away from Her Majesty. A common question that comes up is whether a Jewish mundane or a Jewish persona is allowed under Jewish law to bow to a king and/or queen.

    memories and itunes is evil
I don't know how I ended up on itunes searching but it brought back a flood of memories. Back in the day, when I was still starry eyed with the SCA, getting ready for an event was an event in itself. Packing armor, shields , swords (both live steel and rattan)  the tents, pavilion , break down table, director's chairs etc. It depended what vehicle I had at the time, the truck and van were easy, the car was a little more tricky. Then it was finishing that last bit of new garb and swearing that you would never do it again. Then the drive and getting away from the 20th century, the long hours drive sometimes. NOW here is where itunes comes in, all of the drive was filled with music meant to put you in the mood. Lot's of celtic stuff, SCA filk, and my two Never-Leave-Home-Without-Them, Meg Davis's Captain Jack and the Mermaid and Celtic Stone cassettes .
So, I was feeling nostalgic  and having lost those tape long ago, decided to see if they are still around. Happy to say they are still around and now have been downloaded and placed on CDs. I can remember pulling up the Troll with the tapes still blaring, then it was usually off to set up camp in the dark (again something I swore never again) then into garb and grab my horn, then off to the camp fires. Waking up with the dew heavy on the grass and tent, coffee first at the tavern. Ok, so I am kind of excited about coming back.

    Early book on Witchcraft
I just put an early book up on Ebay...am not trying to sell it here but thought that folks might want to see some of the photos of the Glanvil 'Saducismus Triumphatus: or, Full and Plain evidence concerning Witches and Apparitions' from 1682 (ten years before the Salem Witch Trials) If this not an appropriate place for this, will be more than happy to delete this posting from this forum.
