| Wiki down |
[Aug. 8th, 2005|04:54 pm] |
|
Some of you may have noticed the SBL Wiki hasn't been there for the last few days. Don't panic. It's not been lost, it's just not being displayed (nor are any other websites currently hosted on wonky). There's been a spot of difficulty this past week; it's being dealt with, and the Wiki should return soon. |

Hello all! StarBase Leviathan Management Team's LJ now has Style 2! This means we can have tags and use them at the loss of customised comments. If anyone would rather we had customised comments than tags, comment saying, and I'll change it back :)

| SBL's 5-Year Anniversary Celebration. |
[Jun. 16th, 2005|10:25 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | celebratory | ] | This post is to ask your opinion on staging a special something for our 5-year anniversary on the 3rd October (a Monday). Me and Ross have talked it over a bit but not much, and I thought a party of some description on the Monday evening would be nice. I know we have international members, but the invitation goes out to everyone, regardless. With enough determination all problems can be overcome.
Location, times, etc., even if the event will go ahead or not, will be decided once I receive replies of yea or nay. Whatever happens, something is going to be done to celebrate 5 dodgy years of even dodgier roleplay!
Also posted across starbaseleviathan group. |

| [ | mood |
| | impressed | ] | OK, so I ran out of work to do. The ltcmdrjim pops up and offers me the Wiki link at just the right time to stop me writing a truly insanely long and boring simm (it's getting that way). The SBL Wiki (like a database we can all share and use and update) is now available at the following link:
http://www.wonky.org.uk/~relic/SBLwiki/index.php/Main_Page
As it says, it's by no means complete, but that's where YOU come in! We need YOU to go and play with Wiki. As far as I can work out, it's quite difficult to break it, and random clicking certainly helped we work out what I was doing.
A big, massive, huge, oversized, truly enormous, bigger than this one
THANK YOU! to narrativium for taking time out of his for-once busy schedule to set this up for us! And for hosting it on his precious space.
Update: Crap, I wish I hadn't started! It's nigh impossible to stop! :D |

| I'm not who I used to be... now, who was that? |
[May. 25th, 2005|10:47 pm] |
The transition from Taylor Ternasky to Taylor Rike led to the interesting question of who Rike is, and what personality Taylor will now have.
Enter Dawn with a bright idea: why bother doing all the hard work when there's all these mugs to not give everyone the chance to invent aspects of this new character?

| New Info Page |
[May. 12th, 2005|10:03 am] |
After concerns from inquisitorbob (and me) about copyright infringement, I've updated the LJ Info Page to include a disclaimer-thingy. If there is anything else/anything wrong with this, can people please let me know (either by emailing to starbaseleviathan@yahoogroups.com, me at my Nottm or my DC address, or leaving a comment on the LJ, which is also possible for people without an LJ account (post as anonymous)). The page can be found here.
I have posted a message to SBL Group too. Other changes to the info page include:

| Some queries were raised: |
[Feb. 28th, 2004|03:03 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | frustrated | ] | The rules have been redefined from what I could remember from the original site (now lost in the depths of cyberspace and Pat's computer, may it rest in pieces) and have been put in to try and stop this happening again, not to repair what has already happened - what's the point of crying over spilt milk? Just clear it up and tyr not to do it again, or move that broom you fell over when you spilt it. It's designed as a prevention, not a cure.
They have also been redefined to be more relevant: we're not stick-in-the-muds here at SBL where everything has to be believable, within the bounds of pure Star Trek, and no piss-taking; but I'm certainly not going to let everything go all of the time. There are a number of things I've not been too keen on, but it made for a good storyline at the time. Sharkey's escapade was one of them: it was completely unbelievable, but was fairly well-written and fun. He's not done it since, so I've no reason to complain he's using that skill too much.
Rule 8 is mostly applied to playing characters, and has been ever since I started compiling and editing simms into logs. It was assumed, that by joining SBL you agreed to have your simms changed in the logs so they made sense. It applies to well-defined NPCs with a fair amount of character too. As for Edge, Jim's assumption seems fair about the moose, and there's no reason why it shouldn't just be done for a bit of fun, like Sharkey's escapade, as long as Edge's power isn't abused. As for becoming pacisfist, did no-one read Bob's simm? I thought that explained that Edge was listening to reason, but I could be wrong... According to a lot of people, I am a lot of the time, even when I've later proved them wrong.
Rule 9 has been applied since before any of you joined, and LaFleur was on another ship. Yes, back in Romulan Log was the first instance: my simm made so little sense after I simmed it I simply got rid of it, and another couple (mine and Pat's) conflicted a bit so I changed some stuff in each, aded some bits and no-one knew the difference. The first come, first served bit has applied to me always, at least. I've often written a simm in advance, normally taking a few hours over it, then found that the storyline's shifted and it doesn't fit, so I've kept it in case it'll fit later, and put it in when it does or just deleted it. I expect the same kind of thing from everyone else: what's the point of changing the past, as it'll only adversely affect the present/future? Didn't we learn anything from last Log?
Rule 10's last line, about 'comical', is the fundamental thing about SBL: it's supposed to be fun, not controversial.
The Simm Guide failures I'm alluring to about you guys are the fundamental ones, and none of them need changing. The Quick Reference Simm Guide is still perfectly useable, apart fom it's missing the SO/SC tags reference.
I've often said I'll change, edit, make, repair, etc. everything when I get time. Well, I haven't had time yet: it's called work. If anyone else thinks they have time, can do a better job, wants to move groups, has any constructive suggestions, please tell me. That's what this starbaseleviathan group is for: telling everyone things.
I'm the one here making all this SBL stuff happen. If you're all going to come crying to me everytime Joe Bloggs goes to the bathroom when he's supposed to be on duty, then I'll just delete the groups and give up on it, right here, right now. It won't matter to me much: I'll have more time to do work and other things I enjoy. I do this for you guys, not for me. I do it to give people enetertainment, not to embarrass them, make them upset or anything like that. If you have a problem with the way I run things, you can have a go at moderating the place and leave me to just simm and change all my rules and sites and things as you please, or you can go and join another ST:RPG PBEM site: may I suggest Bravo or Tango Fleet? I mean, they're so organised you have to go through an Academy before you can do anything. As far as I know, you don't get to have a personal armoury in your quarters, a cloaked fleet following you, more than one character, to be Captain as soon as you start, a Romulan on a StarFleet ship, a civilian on a warship, be or do anything other than what's specified as Star Trek, bring in the Borg willy-nilly, install cool weapons and devices, or anything else that's not 'proper'.
As far as I know, SBL is unique in its approach to roleplaying the ST universe: it's unrestricted in comparison with the other.
So, if you want to have a go, tell me, and I'll happily back down, and you can deal with all this flak from everyone else.

| Some Basic Pointers (that's a nice word for RULES). |
[Feb. 28th, 2004|12:38 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | nostalgic | ] | Right guys, there are too many arguments going on here at the moment. Any specifics will be discussed over the Group, but I'm going to notify you all of some basic rules which apply, seen here as written and fast. They will be posted to the Website (well, the SBL part of mine) in due course and has already been sent to the Group. Here they are:
1.) No permanent killing of player characters.
2.) Keep to a reasonable amount of swearing.
3.) As little use as possible of (avoidable) official (copyright) material, such as using Picard or Kirk, is simms, as this may land us in trouble, even though we are not-for-profit.
4.) Please try and keep to the Simming Guidelines as stated in the Simming Guide. If you want a copy, ask.
5.) If you don't want something messed with, put it in an OOC message at the bottom. If it's a whole simm or complete storyline, use the SC/SO tags. Anything else that goes in a simm is deemed reasonably playable within its character.
6.) In the event of one simm being posted at the same time as another with which it conflicts, the one that fits best with the storyline will be deemed the 'winner' unless a method is found to include both in the log.
7.) Anything not previously mentioned in a simm/log/OOC message/episode/etc., later relied on as evidence for argument, will be deemed null.
8.) Characters simmed significantly out-of-chartacter will be altered in the log.
9.) Simms will not just be deleted unless utterly incorrect. Alterations will be made within reason, but it's a case of first come, first served.
10.) If in doubt, simm it. If in doubt about simming it, post an OOC message about it. If in doubt, make it comical.
Read it, memorise it, stick it on your wall and learn it. Test next week!

| More thoughts on who these people in the future are... |
[Feb. 27th, 2004|04:26 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | bored | ] | Right, the three people in the furure with the mystery captain. We know M'Att and Von Harld are there, but who are the others? People in the current crew could still be around, although they'd be getting on a bit. I reckon it'd have to be the captain who is from the crew then, with the third person being somebody's decendant.
This would mean the captain should really be quite a young member of the crew in the current time, and the fact that he's still only a captain suggests it's somebody who doesn't really have much interest in becoming an admiral (if you wanted to be an admiral, you'd be able to achieve it in a hundred years). I'd go with Lyall, but it's upto Tom to decide if he wants it to be his character.
As far as who the third person is, I'd opt to go for Bob & T'brun's son, unles anyone else wants it to be one of their characters/character's decendants. As a half-romulan he'd still be able to keep up with people like M'Att and Von Harld, who are both still quite active at this point in their lives. If it's going to be somebody's kid then they'd be 80-90 years old, and, although (as Ross will tell you) Picard is supposedly 90, quite a few humans probably wouldn't be running round saving the day like he is at that age.
Well that's my thoughts on the matter, anyway. If you think it should be somebody else then please tell me. I'm posting this both here and on the SBL LJ, so if you could post your thoughts on the matter either here or as a comment to my post there I'd appreciate it. |
