Totally unrelated to anything but as I watched numbers last summer and this
army insignia cached my eye. Its on Colby's desk and I started a research and found out that it is the insignia of the MACV the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. I just wondered, if Colby's grandfather served there.

I'm opening the Episode Discussion thread here for anyone who wants to share thoughts on tonight's episode: The Decoy Effect.

My initial reactions and thoughts are behind the cut. Comment on them or just leave your thoughts and questions for others to read and discuss. Please limit Episode Discussions for 5.02 to this post to avoid spoilers, confusion, etc.

And on that note, just in case you didn't catch it, there WILL be SPOILERS for Episode 5.02 The Decoy Effect behind the cut AND in the comments. DO NOT go past this point if you don't want to know! You were warned.

~ OMFG I LOVE NIKKI!!!!!!!!! "FBI! Give me a damn reason!" Nikki, this is my ♥ ... you've stolen it. You and Colby play nice and share. Colby gets the rest of me to use at his discretion. haha.

~ Nikki's "new guy" initiation = CLASSIC. Colby and David giving her a hard time was made of win. Then, she looked so defeated when Don jumped down her throat for not using the distress word - bless her heart. And then of course, Colby being jealous that David gave Nikki their distress word. Priceless.

~ Charlie - I am crazy about him. I think he's being a little stubborn but at the same time, he believes he didn't do anything wrong and he's standing by that. He's also realizing he didn't think it through, not seeing who else would be affected by his decisions. He knows there's a fight coming. He wants to face it. He just doesn't want to take every one down with him. The end scene with him and Amita... *sighs* I just wanted to cuddle up next to him and tell him it was going to be all right. This is the Charlie I fell in love with in Season 1.

~ On the Charlie story line, OMG - I know I'm supposed to hate him, but I love Agent McGowan! Keith Carradine plays him PERFECTLY. I mean - he pulls no punches, cuts to the chase, and doesn't even FLINCH. Totally blew me away.

~ I'm really excited about this security clearance story line, even more so after Don's conversation with Agent McGowan. I really believe this has opened up infinite potential to explore all these characters and to watch them grow. McGowan made a good point - why hasn't Don been promoted in four years? As a fed myself (EPA, not FBI... haha) three years is about your limit before they start looking into what you're doing to not get a promotion. I want to see this expanded.

~ Case itself - I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I couldn't decide if I wanted to yell, cry, or squee. I think I did a little of everything.

~ Colby. Dear God. Colby. *swoons* I don't have to ask but did you SEE him in the security guard outfit and then in the same outfit with the shirt untucked and unbuttoned? I never wanted to get my hand under a man's shirt so bad in all my life.

~ Colby. Dear God. Colby. He really can't handle it when he doesn't keep his word. When he was kneeling beside Janet and looked to the side "We didn't get her home." Oh, just stab my heart out and stomp it on the floor.

~ One word: SPLAT. That is totally all you heard when that guy got hit by that truck AFTER he dove under the Charger in the garage. I shouted right out loud "HOLY SHIT DID YOU SEE THAT?" I'm not ashamed.

~ Is anyone else REALLY loving the "Charlie-visions" this season? I LOVE how the characters slide through the vision and tonight Charlie was even walking through one. AMAZING.

~ How amazing was Larry's ringtone on his cell phone that Don "shoved at him"? haha. Larry's excitement about super conductors and figuring out the case was so wonderful.

~ Favorite moment: Don escorting Charlie from the room. "You can't be here." Charlie: Lives are at stake. Wouldn't you break a few rules to solve the case? Don: *smiles* Come on. OMG! Eppes Brothers for the win!

In summary: Between this episode and last, I am falling in love with Numb3rs all over again. They have brought back everything I loved about Season 1 - 3. *sighs*

I've said too much... it's your turn.

Don, Megan, Alan and Hallie, who was carrying a sleepy child in her arms, arrived first at the hospital. David was waiting for them by the ER entrance. The moment Hallie saw him, she hurried towards him.

“Any word?” she asked.

“No, the last thing I heard was they were taking him to CT and then to surgery,” he replied as he opened the door for her.

Hallie and the rest of the gang made their way to the waiting area. Hallie sat down and carefully placed Robbie on her lap. She was thankful that he didn’t wake up. Alan sat right next to her to give her support; David was pacing up and down while Don and Megan went back outside to wait for Liz. The moment they got outside, Liz was parking the car.

Megan heard someone blow the horn and turned around. “Derek’s here, too,” she informed Don.

Don waited for everyone to come before he informed them that there was still no word on Colby.

“Don, did you call Uncle Simon and Aunt Emma?” asked Cody.

“Yes, on the way to get Hallie.”

“Good. Oh, Don, Megan, this is Ben Loften,” Cody introduced a strange man Don didn’t know yet.

Don shook Ben’s hand. “Sorry for your loss.”

“Thank you. By the way, the location wasn’t far from CJ’s apartment building. We heard the gun shots and the sirens.”

Don didn’t know what to say. He just turned around and led the way back inside the hospital to wait for word on Colby.

So close but too late, Megan thought as she followed everyone to the waiting room.

Robbie was starting to wake up when Ben walked into the waiting room. He looked at the woman who was holding his grandson. She must be Hallie, he thought as he walked over to her.

“Hallie?”

She looked up at him. “Yes?”

Ben was about to introduce himself when Robbie woke up. “Grandpa Ben.”

“How’s my sport?”

Robbie held up his arms for Ben to take him, without saying anything. Ben bent down and took his grandson. He rubbed the boy’s back gently before sitting down on an empty chair by Hallie.

“I saw the bad man when he was hurting Mommy,” Robbie whispered into his grandfather’s ear.

Ben closed his eyes and opened them again. “Sport, how about you go back to Hallie for a moment?”

“Why, grandpa?”

“Grandpa needs to go talk to Sgt. Paul.”

Robbie didn’t say anything. He just climbed back to Hallie. Ben got back up and turned to her. “It’s nice to finally meet you. Sport and CJ both couldn’t stop talking about you.”

Hallie’s cheeks turned a little red.

Ben walked out of the waiting area and made his way outside. He still couldn’t believe that Robbie had been home with Becky the night she had been killed.

Suddenly, he felt someone put a hand on his shoulder and give it a squeeze. He turned his head a little to see who it was. Seeing it was Paul, Zack, Don, Derek and David, he took a deep breath. “It was Anthony’s father that checked him out of Fort Worth .”

“How you know?” asked Sgt. Paul.
“He came to see me. I knew something was off about him. I had a nice long talk with our dear friend Matthew. To him, there was nothing wrong with his son.”

Sgt. Paul eyed Ben. “Mattie’s better been-“

Ben cut him off. “Don’t worry, Paulie, Mattie is still in one piece but when I get back home, I can’t promise anything.”

“Benjamin, you better not do anything to him.”

Ben turned around to face Paul. “He’s the reason why my daughter got killed. He is the reason why my grandson doesn’t have a mother. He’s the reason why we’re all here waiting for word on CJ. If it wasn’t for him, Anthony would still be getting the help he needed!” he yelled.

He took a deep breath and left his friend standing there. The other men watched him go back in.

“Eppes, any word on Granger?” asked A.D. Wright.

Don turned around to face his boss. He hadn’t noticed that Wright was here. “No, sir.”

David looked at his watch, then back at the entrance. “I’m going to go in to see if the doctor has come back out.” He didn’t give anyone a chance to respond, he just left. Soon everyone else followed him inside and made their way back into the waiting room.

Megan got up and went to the nurse's station to find out something about Colby when all the men were heading her way.

“How can I help you, ma’am?” asked a nurse.

“I was wondering if you knew anything about Colby Granger. He’s an FBI agent. The medics brought him here a while ago.”

The nurse picked up the phone, said some words and hung up. She looked at Megan. “The doctor will come out soon to update everyone on Mr. Granger’s condition.”

Finally, an hour later a doctor made his way into the waiting room. He saw the agent who came in with his patient and cleared his throat. “Granger Family?”

“Yes,” Hallie said as she started to get up, but the doctor waved her to stay seated. “I’m Dr. Smith.”

“Hallie Courville, Colby’s girlfriend, and this is his son Robbie. Over there you can see his co-workers, his friends and his cousin.”

The doctor nodded. “We finally got Agent Granger stable enough for surgery, but we ran into a little problem during the CT scan. He started to fight the breathing tube when he regained some consciousness. He also tried to get up, which caused him to start bleeding again,” he explained. “He was shot 4 times in different places in his abdominal area. One bullet was a through and through. He has two broken ribs on each side and a major concussion that we need to watch carefully. We don’t know which organs are damaged because there is a lot of blood that is blocking the view on the CT scan, also.”

“Doctor, how long will the surgery be?” asked Alan.

“Don’t know. It might take two hours, maybe longer. It depends on how much damage there is.” Dr. Smith got up. “I have a nurse who will show all of you where the surgical waiting room is.”

They all moved quietly to the waiting room area, lost in their own thoughts. Once in the room, Don, David, Megan, Liz and AD Wright started pacing up and down like caged lions, worried about their friend.

Hallie was holding Robbie in her arms, praying everything would go well during the surgery, hoping the man of her life could make it.

Alan, Charlie, Amita and Larry went to get everyone something to drink and eat because they couldn’t just be seated there anymore.

Ben watched Hallie and his grandson closely before going to meet Paul. From the way Hallie was holding Robbie, he knew that she loved him so much. Ben was glad that the kid had her in his life.

Sgt. Paul and Ben were talking Zack into staying until the surgery was done before leaving. They told him that he always left when his godson needed him the most and that this was a moment in which they weren’t going to allow it at all. Finally, Zack promised his little brother and his friend that he wasn’t going anywhere anytime soon and sat down.

Cody, Derek and Sarah just sat there, praying that they didn’t have to say good bye to another childhood friend.

When the news got out about Colby, many law enforcement officers and agents from different agencies started to come to the hospital to donate blood. AD Wright worked out an agreement with the hospital to get a blood bank bus at the FBI office, other at the LAPD headquarters and a third one outside of the hospital.

The moment A.D. Wright stepped outside of the hospital, the people waiting in line to donate blood got quiet. “I made an arrangement with the hospital to have a blood bank bus in three locations. One bus will be at the FBI building, another one will be at the LAPD headquarters and the last bus will be across the street. Please make your way to one of those locations.”

“Sir, any word on Granger?” yelled an agent.

Colby’s parents and younger brothers were making their way through the crowd of people to get inside the hospital. Simon stopped when he heard his stepson’s name and looked around at all the people there.

AD Wright took a deep breath before answering the question. “Agent Granger is still in surgery.”

Simon took Emma’s hand and gave it a squeeze before wrapping his arm around her waist.

Nate looked at his watch and did some calculations. “Dad, Colby’s been in surgery for four hours now,” he stated.

“I know,” was all Simon could get out before he started walking again.

“This is not supposed to happen to Colby,” Jordan said quietly.

He didn’t know anyone else had heard him until he felt a hand on both of his shoulders. He picked up his head to face his brothers Ethan and Nate. “I know, little bro.”

“Nate, Ethan , Jordan ,” Emma called out to her sons when she realized that they weren’t behind her and Simon.

The boys slowly made their way towards her. Emma knew that they were taking this very hard because to them, nothing could stop Colby. To them, their older brother was invisible and nothing could hurt him. Now here they were outside of a hospital because Colby had gotten shot by a person he had once considered a close friend.

Emma waited until her sons were close to her. “What did Colby tell you all when he came home from Afghanistan after the RPG accident?”

“That nothing would stop him from coming back to us,” Ethan said.

“All we have to do is keep our faith and stay together,” Nate added.

“And always keep our heads up,” Jordan continued. After that, both Ethan and Nate quickly picked up their heads up and looked at him.

“That’s more like it,” Simon said. He always hated to see his sons’ heads down.

“Dad, why are all these people here?” asked Jordan .

“They here to donate blood for your brother.”

“Can we donate, Dad?” asked the twins.

Simon turned around to face them. “You are both 17, so I don’t see why not. As a matter of fact, I was planning on donating myself after I heard word on Colby.”

“Simon, you and the twins go now while Jordan and I go to find out where the surgery waiting room is. Then we can meet up in the lobby.”

Simon was about to answer when someone talked first. “Excuse me, I didn’t mean to overhear you, but the surgery waiting room is located on the 3rd floor,” said an agent that was near them.

“Thank you,” Emma told him. “Jordan and I will go head up.”

“Why can’t I donate blood for Colby? He’s my brother too,” asked Jordan.

Simon knelt down in front of him. “You’re just 13 years old.” He put his hand up to stop his son. “But there is something else you can do for Colby.”

“What’s that?”

“You can help watch your nephew.”

“Mmm… Okay.”

The agent that had told them about the waiting room was still standing next to them. "You’re Granger’s family?” the agent asked.

Simon got up from the ground. “Yes, I’m Simon, Colby’s stepfather, this is my wife Emma, his mother, and these are his younger brothers Ethan, Nate, and Jordan.”

“I’m Assistant Director of the FBI, Phillip Wright. I can have an agent bring the boys up who are going to donate blood. I’m about to go back up to the waiting room myself.”

“Thank you that would be nice.” Simon accepted the offer. He looked at the twins. “Twins, let’s go, and Jordan? Remember what I said.” Jordan nodded.

AD Wright looked around. “Agent Johnson, please show Colby’s stepfather and brothers where to go to donate blood. Then show them to the surgical waiting room, too.”

“Yes, sir.”

AD Wright waited until they were out of sight before leading the way inside. Once in the waiting room, Jordan went to meet Cody and told him that the twins were donating blood with Simon. Emma went to meet Hallie. She kissed her grandson on the head before hugging her. She sat down next to her. “Everything is going to be fine. Colby’s a fighter and he will fight through this.”

Seconds turned into minutes, minutes turned into hours and still there was no word on Colby. Hallie looked at her watch. “Emma, can you take Robbie?”

Emma reached for her grandson and started rubbing his back gently when he woke up, as she watched Hallie disappear from view.

The fear and worrying for Colby finally got to Hallie. She made her way to the bathroom. Once in there, she let her tears fall. Colby had been in surgery for six hours now. She had always known that she loved him, but she hadn’t realized how much he meant to her until now. She couldn’t picture her life without Colby as she thought about the first time they had met.

Colby had some time off, since he wasn’t cleared to return to the field after the shooting in the office. He still couldn’t believe that it was his bullet was the one that had killed McCall, the sex offender; he really had done what Don had said he'd to do back at the office.

Going surfing had helped some, but not much. In times like this he felt he needed his family, but he wasn’t going to take the chance of putting them in harms way. Just thinking about them, Colby decided to go downtown to look for a present for his mother’s birthday, which was coming up.

He found himself walking down Temple Street when something caught his eye. Moving closer to the window so he could take a better view of the paintings a store sold, he couldn’t get over how beautiful they were. When Colby got inside, the owner had just finished up with a customer. As Colby was having a hard time deciding on what painting to get for his mother, she walked over to him.

“Can I help you, sir?” she asked.

Colby turned around to face her. The moment Colby faced her, Hallie’s breath was caught. “Yes, I’m looking for a painting for my mother.”

As they were talking, Hallie felt something she had never felt before. She didn’t know if it was the way Colby talked about his mother or something else.

“I can do a custom design,” she told him.

He started grinning. “Can you?”

“Sure, I just need to know a couple of things. Would you follow me to my office, please?”

Once in the office, they were talking about the design and color when Colby noticed the way her eyes sparked and that caught his breath. While they continued to talk, Colby looked at her more and more closely. She had short, reddish-blonde hair with sparkling blue eyes… Then a little voice in the back of his mind reminded him about his undercover work.

That night, he couldn’t stop thinking about Hallie. He knew the timing was very wrong for him to start seeing someone. He wasn’t even visiting his family because he wanted to keep them safe, so there was no way he was going to date someone. But it didn’t work out that way, because every time Colby saw Hallie or talked to her on the phone, his feelings grew more and more.

He couldn’t stop thinking about her eyes, her smile and her laughter. Finally, he decided to make a move. He was picking up the painting that night.

“Wow!! Hallie, this is amazing,” he told her when he saw the painting of the Eiffel towers with a sunset mixed with a sunrise.

“I’m glad you like it. Here is the packaging for it.”

Colby took the packaging and placed the painting in it. “Can you mail it?”

“Sure, I have a mailing service.”

Colby watched her put the package down very carefully. Then he said, “Do you want to go out to dinner sometime?”

Hallie was glad she had put the painting down before he asked her. She felt her heart pound as she turned around. “I would love to.”

That night at dinner, Colby had told her that he was from Idaho and had spent time in Afghanistan. He had also told her about his team members. Hallie had told him that she was from San Diego, about the store she owned and how she had gotten her talents from her mother.

Colby had enjoyed her company at dinner and a week after their date Hallie had called him on the phone. Colby had told her how he had felt about her before they went out, how he couldn’t stop thinking about her and that he hadn't felt that way in a long time.

Back in the waiting room, Emma was getting worried about Hallie. She hadn’t come back and it had been a long time already. “Megan, Sarah, can you two please go look for Hallie?”

“Sure,” Megan answered. She was glad to have something to do.

Sarah and Megan both left the waiting room. When they came across a bathroom, Sarah pointed to it.

Sarah opened the door and saw that Hallie was seated on the floor with her knees bent up and her arms crossed around them.

Both women sat down on each side of her. “Hallie. CJ is a fighter,” Sarah said.
Hallie picked up her head up and sniffed. “I know, but I’m scared.”

“Every single one of us is scared too, Hallie. Just remember that we’re here for you,” Megan said.

Finally, Hallie stopped crying and got up. She washed her face and turned around. “Thanks.” Her voice was hoarse.

They walked back to the waiting room quietly. The moment Hallie walked in, Robbie climbed off of Emma and ran to her. She picked him up and kissed his forehead.

It was 4:00 in the morning when three doctors came in the waiting room. When they walked in, they were shocked to see so many people waiting for a patient. There were people pacing up and down, people sleeping on the floor, people on their laptops and people just sitting there.

“Granger Family?” one of the doctors said.

Simon and Emma both jumped up and went to meet him and the other two doctors. The people that were pacing up and down stopped in their tracks. The people that were on their computers closed them. The people that were sleeping woke up.

“I’m Dr. Barker; this is Dr. Guidry, Dr. McNeil.”

Dr. McNeil looked around the waiting room. “The rest is for Granger, also?”

“Yes, all of us.”

Dr. Guidry proceeded to inform them about Colby's condition. “Agent Granger is a very lucky man. The surgery took 8 hours. When we were done, we brought him to take an MRI to get a better look at his head injury. All we can see for now is that there is just swelling, but we do have to keep a close eye on it. He is currently on medicines to bring down the swelling and he is in his room now.”

“What about brain damage?” asked Cody.

“We won’t know until he wakes up.”

Dr. Guidry stepped back and Dr. McNeil stepped forward. “Agent Granger is currently receiving transfusions to replace the blood he lost from the surgery and from the scene. One of the bullets hit his spleen, which caused massive bleeding. It took us at least two hours to control it,” he said. “We had to do a splenectomy to remove his spleen, which he can live without. The other organ that was damaged by a bullet was his left kidney. It was punctured but we managed to repair it. We placed his broken ribs back into place and repaired his left lung. We placed two chest tubes on each side to drain the excess fluids. Right now he is breathing on his own with the help from an oxygen mask. His oxygen level is still irregular and if it gets any lower, we’re going to intubate him again.”

Dr. McNeil backed up and Dr. Barker stood up. “One of the bullets that was a through and through exited close to his spinal cord. There is swelling around that area from the bullet and the fall.”

“Doctor, are you saying he is going to be paralyzed?” asked a shaky voice that came from one of the twins.

Dr. Barker took a deep breath before answering. “Until the swelling goes down, we won’t know what damage there is. So far, there is nothing broken or fractured.”

Everyone was quiet, so Dr. Barker continued. “I’m going to be honest here. There is a chance Agent Granger might be paralyzed from the waist down.” He held up his hand to stop everyone from protesting. “There is also a chance he might not be. I’m telling you all this so you all can be prepared for the worst.”

Dr. Barker nodded to McNeil and he got up. “He is currently in the ICU. We have a nurse keeping a close eye on him. We are monitoring the swelling around his brain and spine, his kidney function and his breathing and oxygen levels.”

“Also, we recommend that all of you encourage Agent Granger to see a counselor as soon as he is physically able to in order to avoid PTSD or severe depression,” Dr. Barker said before leaving.

“Since there are a lot of people here, you all can split up into groups to see him.”

The first group was his parents, his younger brothers, Hallie, Robbie, Don, David, Megan, Liz and AD Wright.

Hallie was the first one in the room with Robbie. She scanned the still form of Colby. He had two IV's hooked up to him on each arm. One was all his medications and the other one was the blood transfusion. As the nurse replaced the oxygen mask with the nasal cannula on him, Hallie noticed Colby's face was very pale. He was also hooked up to monitors that Hallie didn’t know what they were for. She bent down to kiss his forehead. He felt so cold when she touched him. “I love you Colbs.” She felt tears in her eyes and handed Robbie to Simon before leaving.

Ethan, Nate and Jordan never saw their older brother so still before. Jordan couldn’t take it anymore and stormed out, soon followed by the twins.

Megan, Don, David and Liz didn’t know what to do. They were still in shock that they had almost lost a close friend and a damn good agent. They all left so the second group could see Colby.

After the second group had seen Colby, Emma looked around. Every single one of them had been here from the start. They all looked so tired it was unreal. “All of you go home and get some sleep. I will call if anything changes with Colby’s condition.”

Derek looked at Sarah and nodded. “Ben, Zack, Paul and Cody, you all can come home with us. I have a key to C… his place,” Derek turned around. He couldn’t bring himself to say Colby’s name.

“Simon, the boys can stay at the house.” Alan offered.

“Thank you Alan.” Colby’s father called the twins over. “Please, watch over your little brother.” Each of them nodded, not trusting their voices.

“Emma, I can take Robbie.” Ben said as he got up.

Hallie walked back in the waiting room when Ben was grabbing Robbie. “Ben, Robbie still wakes up screaming from the nightmares,” she let him know. Then she kissed Robbie on the temple before he and Ben left.

“Simon, we’re staying.” Don said.

Simon already knew that Don, Megan and David would stay. Who could blame them? All of them went back to the room. Don, David and Megan took the chairs that the nurse had put in the corner for them while Emma went to her son’s side and sat down. Simon did the same.

Finally, Hallie sat down on Colby’s right side, took his hand and rested her head on the bed. Soon, she fell asleep.

Last night brought Numb3rs back to us, even if I'm the only one who seems to have loved it. And Colby looked good enough to eat. That's all I'm saying, lest someone be spoiled. hehe. In the spirit of classic Colby and classic Numb3rs moments, today we have Part 8 of 17 for The Best of Colby Granger. Fun to fun! Enjoy! :)

Classic Colby moment: "A = B = C = D. It's like one of Charlie's equations... I can't believe I just said that." haha.
