The electric voodoo kitchen makes press!
Gothic Beauty #17 is now out and there's a 2 page feature on my kitchen, and I thought I'd show off a few more pics of stuff you couldn't see in the magazine. With photos in GBM, I've given how the idea(s) came about and how things were done. Everything was trial and error and luckily, we had few errors.
This is taken through one of the doorways (we have two, this is from the dining room), it's separated by a bamboo curtain and you can see the altar on the right and the shelving would be on the left with the table. The fridge was once white but we painted it black... took something like 3 or 4 cans of appliance paint. Not a shiny finish at all, very flat, but it worked. I used chalk on the sides and drew a tarot card layout and labelled in all in Spanish. (Taken from my Tarot de los Muertos) After I would put the outline of the card down (using a template) I coated it in "photo retouch" (very pricy) so I wouldn't smear it. Everytime I finish a part of the card layout, I would use the photo retouch to seal it. We're talking about making copies of the Tarot de los Muertos to shellac onto the cabinets, although we haven't decid
This shows off the very lovely artwork of Lemur Gurl (aka
artbylemurgurl) with frames I made out of cheap frames (25¢ each) and painted wood shims.
In this picture you can see the dark stained bamboo trim that we bought at Pier One (which had it cheaper than World Market) and split it ourselves and then drilled holes in to adhere it to the wall and ceiling. Surprisingly, drilling holes and nailing it in place was easier than liquid nails. We also hid the cord of the light in the corner by another split piece of bamboo and snaked the cord behind it and down to the floor.
Not quite easy to see, but the art here are actual greeting cards from Rachael Huntington's site aka
rhuntington. One is a cat, one is a bat and one is a spider, added some dried roses (from one of my best mate's wedding where I was a bridesmaid) and a pin up calendar of course.
Shelf above the sink with even more vintage Virgin Marys and various tchotchkes. The backsplash we wanted to mosiac like we did on the stove but we just ran out of time and energy. We painted it black and used the same purple glitter as on the countertops. Eventually though we'll return to working on that and I'm probably continue the skull motif like the backsplash on the stove.
And a detail of the altar:
Sorry if some of you have seen this before.
