Bedroom (x-posted)
New condo! New bedroom!

BEFORE:

I painted the walls periwinkle before I brought my furniture into the bedroom.

Two months after I moved in, things were still looking very bare. I turned my books on their sides because it makes my shelves look uncluttered. It's still easy to read the titles on their spines from above.

AFTER:

My mother made the pillow shams and the dust ruffle. She and I made the headboard together.

Here is a close-up of the picture hanging over the bed.

I bought the dresser on craigslist and spent an entire weekend painting it black.

The jewelry box was a Christmas gift. The pitcher came from Goodwill, and it is nearly full of loose change. The jars hold buttons, safety pins, and bits of thread.

My boyfriend asked me to buy a tray "so he could make me breakfast in bed." I bought this tray for that purpose. But when it arrived, it was so pretty that I decided to use it as art instead.

This little drop-leaf table belonged to my great-grandmother. I painted it black.

My boyfriend bought this nightstand for me at a garage sale. I painted it black.

The bookshelves and console table were in my old bedroom. The bookshelves are from Target. The table came from a garage sale. I painted it black. Are we sensing a pattern here?

My entire bedroom was planned around this clock.

This doll is a souvenir from my first trip to New York City.

My beloved grandmother had an old fur coat that she loved, but after 30 years it was too ratty to be worn. She had a good friend cut it up and make 3 teddy bears out of it--one for me and each of my sisters. Normally I'm not crazy about fur, but I love my grandma-bear.

As you can see, the closet on the left holds my clothes. The closet on the right holds my washing machine and dryer.

This morning my boyfriend woke me up with birthday presents! He bought these pillows for my bed.

Thank you! I stole the idea of stacking books sideways from the Pottery Barn catalog. Normally I don't like their stuff, but sometimes they have good ideas.

How do you paint furniture? I bought spray paint for wood and tried spraying an old bookcase black...But it was a disaster!

I paint the old-fashioned way, with glossy oil-based paint and a bristle brush. I know some people don't like the thin lines that brushes leave, but I like them and I think they add character. Oil paint is stinky and messy, but it's much more durable than water-based paint.

That wall colour is so beautiful and calm... really good for a bedroom. It must be a lovely room to relax in, it looks really laid-back. I also like the idea of having your washing machine and dryer in the bedroom!

And thank you very much!!

Having a washer and dryer in the bedroom is the BEST THING EVER. It's so efficient!

I love the lilac colour of the walls, I hope to paint my dressing room a similar colour when I move.

Also, I generally am not a big fan of black furniture, but it looks so sleek yet still vintage in your space.

What kind of paint did you use for painting your furniture? I have been trying to find black bedroom furniture for ages that has that kind of gloss (but for cheap!) and haven't had any luck.

I used Rustoleum high-gloss oil-based paint.

that's so funny about the teddy bear. my grandmother did the same thing for me and my two sisters. the dress she wore to my parents' wedding was also cut up and made into outfits for the bears.

your bed is also very similar to what i want to do with mine.

Interesting tip on turning the books sideways... I might have to get on that!
Beautiful work... I am a sucker for things that have been painted with oil based paint... I would cover the world in lacquer if I could!

Can I ask where you picked up your fabric?

Oil paint is love. :)

The fabric is by Waverly. I picked it up at a small local shop, but most fabric stores carry Waverly. It's pretty easy to find. And Target currently has a bedding collection made with this fabric, too (I think that's where my boyfriend got the pillows).

May I first compliment you and your mom on the wonderful DIY bed projects! Love the headboard and fabric used for it. Just my two cents, The bookcases and the table between them really crowd your space. The bookcases make it feel more like a study then a relaxing elegant bedroom. I would find another home for them and make some long drapes for your window. I think you have a great start to a well designed room, you definetly have an eye for design!

Thank you!! But without bookcases, my bedroom wouldn't really feel like it was mine. I'm currently working toward my Master of Library Science degree--books are a part of who I am. And since I believe bedrooms should reflect their owner's personality and their passions, I've gotta go with the books!

But window treatments are a really good idea. I was thinking that my windows look a little bare. Perhaps a cornice?

absolutely gorgeous. it looks like such a nice place to wake up in!

the only thing i'm worried about is your grandmother's table. was it antique? did you get it appraised before you painted it?

Thank you!!

I'm not sure about the table's value; I do know that it was from the 1950's or 1960's, it had no manufacturer's mark, and it had been HEAVILY abused. My mother's family has run a furniture store for 4 generations, so mom is the furniture expert in the family. She encouraged me to either paint it or throw it away. I hope she was right in her assessment!
