green with envy
"How I Spent my SuperBowl Sunday" by: Jaime K

I wish I had thought to take "before" pictures.
I painted one wall green, installed shelves above the
desk, re-arranged the placement of the bed. All this for
a mere $50. Not bad!!!

I plan to remodel my whole kitchen as soon as I can afford
a new countertop (*anyone have any ideas for something cheap?
I had NO IDEA countertops were so expensive, a la Lowe's and
Home Depot), and a whole redesign to the living room as
soon as I can afford a new couch.

Be nice, it's my first post!

It will probably look better if I take pictures tomorrow with natural light.
Let's have a sleepover.

Thank you! I just got this place last year (600 sq. foot condo apartment) and by far the best thing is deciding "nothing to do today, I guess I'll paint a wall or something". Ha ha, thank you!

Thanks so much!
The painting was done by my brilliant genius artist girlfriend. She just started making new paintings (in addition to many wonderful older ones) and is looking to start selling them online - there seems to be a great response in this community - if you would like, I can post a link to her site once it's up and running!!

Thanks so much! It was a toss-up between green, some shade of blue, or pink. But I really want to paint my kitchen pink, and already have a bright turquoise blue bathroom, so green seemed to make the most sense without repeats. I also had no idea how many THINGS I had with these colors, it was meant to be!

Regarding countertops- look in your local phonebook for a salvage type place- we have one called reStore. They have old clawfoot tubs, radiators, etc, but also get lots of ripped out cabinets/countertops from when people "upgrade" their kitchens

anyone have any ideas for something cheap?

Do you have a building salvage place nearby? If you're not in a hurry to get it done and can keep in mind what something would cost new, salvage yards can often net you mad savings.

We recently picked up about 175 square feet of brand new eucalyptus hardwood flooring (eco-friendly no less) for $2 a sqaure foot. Even the unfinished stuff usually goes for $6 a square foot retail. While there we spied a bunch of countertops, butcher block sections, and even pieces from an old bowling alley.

Can you imagine what a countertop with the arrows from a bolwing lane would look like?

I so want to hang out in that room! Amazing job.

I got my counters at Lowes when I redid my kitchen. Lowes is the cheapest for conventional countertops. I shopped around a lot. For two large counters - one custom sized - it cost about $300-ish with end caps. That was way cheaper than other alternatives.

Thanks so much!

I have been looking there. I think I kind of boringly want black countertops since I do intend to sell this place in a few years and need to make it have "mass appeal" and just don't have the money to get my IDEAL countertops now, and then change them again before a sell.

I actually have very little counter space so I imagine that would work in my favor. Do you have any pictures of yours, may I see them?

On the countertop, grab the phone book and call local cabinet place. Lowes and Home Depot wanted right at $500 for formica laminate countertop for my kitchen. Local cabinet guy wanted $234 for identical, and I do mean identical, countertop. I've got an entire new kitchen coming in next week from cabinet guy... Lowes wanted $5,000 for new kitchen, while cabinet guy kicked their butts with options and came in under $3000 for the whole deal.

So yea, on stuff like this, shop local! I'm getting a killer deal on flooring, doors and windows as well by going with local guys instead of the Lowes/HD. We're still getting our new bathroom from Lowes, but the local plumbing places were really high on simple things if you wanted to do it yourself (they didn't want to talk about DIY stuff at the local plumbing places, and I'm not paying somebody to do that stuff for me).

Fun room!

We're currently redoing our kithen (In fact I'm taking a breather from breathing in stinky paint primer and I have paint on my hands as I type!) Anway, we purchased our countertops at Home Depot - about 7 feet for $80 each. We did the cutting, intallation, and encaps ourselves, which obviously cut down on costs. They're just laminate but I love 'em
