sauce (in progress)
i moved from bushwick, brooklyn, to san francisco, california two months ago.

this was my old place, an 800 sq. ft. converted factory one-room loft, near the L line:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pintuck/sets/72057594049803984/ i miss it.

the new place is an ~850 sq. ft. more traditional apartment built in the mid-1960s on a hill near the haight/castro looking toward the pacific ocean.

from one sea to the other shining sea, i guess you'd say. :)

for those who might be interested: what the SF place looked like empty:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/pintuck/sets/72157594313574246/
(some quick and dirty empty apartment shots are at the beginning of that set)

kitchen, bedroom, and bathrooms are still in a major state of flux at the moment. and i still want to change stuff, paint, and move stuff around, but it's moving toward comfortable as the weeks and months pass. i'm trying to be more controlled this time around with colors, and acquisitions and choices. we (me and the husband) have gotten rid of quite a lot of stuff and the whole feeling is a lot cleaner than our old place, which i really like.

but...i'm by no means minimal. it's just not me, though i ADORE looking at such spare modern spaces. i prefer a controlled, maximalist approach: bright colors mixed with some neutrals, modern pieces with hand-made touches, like bright, deliciously tacky yet carefully chosen accents in needlepoint, fibers, afghans, quilts, and ceramics/glass.

anyway.
the new place:

this coffee table was a recent acquisition; it's from the 60s-70s and was hand-tiled by an artist, perhaps a ceramicist/potter?:
new couch and coffee table

new custom made jonathan adler pillows (i picked the color combos):
happiness is...
i want to add more needlepoint/bargello pillows to this couch as time progresses. i'm thinking of hand-making them, myself, as i am way into the needle arts (fashion design, sewing, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, etc.)

ikea chairs that will hopefully eventually be replaced with eames plywood lounge chairs in walnut, when we can afford it:
new mid-century hand-tiled table
also want to get a flokati in the living room...eventually. probably in cream or perhaps beige/tan?

where the art/craft magic happens. it's cluttery over here but getting better:

Oooh, I love. I wouldn't replace the chairs, because I'd think the ones you have are more comfy. I'm all about comfort though. Both are nice. ;)

Also, I'm desperately looking for something red/tan like the pillow on one of those chairs. I remember seeing it at IKEA - but do you remember if they had bedding that matched that? I keep looking and I'm coming up with nothing.

i have no idea if there was bedding to match that red-orange/tan pillow @ IKEA...i think it was just a throw pillow. i do believe they still have it.

the eames chairs are comfortable...i've test driven them several times, so it remains the plan.

Love it!

Where did you get your large bookcase? I'm searching one to fill in a difficult spot in my home, and that looks like it may fit the bill.

My favorite thing of all of course though, has to be the card catalog! Fantastic!!

IKEA. it's the "norrebo" shelving unit. bought it because it was spare and actually solid (though soft) wood.

Welcome to the area. We just moved to Oakland from Minneapolis 3 months ago.

Though I find many individual items in your home nauseating, somehow they really work together. It's easy to overdo kitchy knicknacks like that, you did a good job. Bravo!

What do you sew? I have a home business and might be looking for work at home seamstresses for some part time piece work in the near future.

i LOVE THAT CARD CATALOG.

my taste isn't for everyone but it makes me happy.

i design clothing/knitwear...but i'm pretty busy with that and other projects/work and don't really have time for piecework at all. good luck though.

I love your wooden "MEASURE" thing on the craft table... is it there as a reminder? Does it work? 'Cause if it does, I'm totally stealing your idea. :)

it's a hanger for rulers that is currently not hanging, and instead, sitting on top of a ruler organizer thingy.

What a nice place!

I was glad to see that locker/TV stand thing (from Ikea right?) in use, because in the store and online they just look so cold and remind me of high school, but it fits in your place.

That green artwork that looks like limes, is it just fabric stretched over something? Did you make it yourself?

yes, marimekko fabric...it is stretched over stretcher bars i found abandoned in the hallway of my old apt. back in brooklyn.

Very very cute. :) Bright and comfortable feeling, I like!

I don't know why I find the Ikea PS so much more appealing now than I did a couple of years ago, but now I am quite tempted. ;) I see that they have a half-size cabinet that has casters - do you know if the full size one that you've got is caster-compatible? I could probably make an Ikea run and find out, but I figured I'd ask, seeing as you already have one. ;)

"controlled maximalist" is a great way to describe your style! that's mine, too...and "control" is key for me, since my partner is an absolute concrete bunker sort of minimalist, so we both do some compromising to have a swell living space with neutral tones, low clutter, and a smattering of animal-shaped planters, screaming bright colors, and things that are hilarious to look at.

your space is gorgeous. hooray!

Can I ask, without sounding silly- what do you keep in the card cataloge? I know the obvious answer is "cards" but...you never know.

with so many people somehow cheapening their design with Ikea furniture, you've incorporated it in beautifully.

Such character! I love it. It reminds me alot of popular Apartment Therapy (.com) places.
