On top of living in her house, going to the same school and being Sarah Jane's new companion, looks like the new girl's taken over Maria's car seat, too.... I'm going to give Rani the benefit of the doubt. Just hope she doesn't turn out to be another Martha *burn*

Lol, for me - and even the Doctor really - she couldn't really fill the void that Rose left. Not to mention her family were just totally eugh. Not to mention her acting was like a bad Drama student and not an actress. I just have a long list of Martha pet hates. Sorry Martha lovers!

Catherine Tate, on the other hand, is just brilliant.

Is her name really Rani? Does she carry a strange watch?

I'll miss Maria, but perhaps the new girl will have great chemistry like Martha and Burn Gorman.

I'm TOTALLY with you on that. Martha was bad enough in Doctor Who and Torchwood. I couldn't bare it if another Martha-type character turns up on SJA too.

So does this mean that Maria and her family won't be in SJA any longer? (I've been living under a rock otherwise known as coursework, revision and exams)

An insider told me that Yasmin's real mum was asking for more money and causing a ruckus, and so Beeb decided not to take Yasmin Paige on this season.

If it was a sole character leaving, fine - but the choice affected Alan and Chrissie too, who I adored. I think Alan's back for one or two episodes, but I'm not entirely sure on Maria. She may just get mentioned.

Okay, I know most people have been talking about the girls, so I just gotta say it: "YAY LUKE AND CLYDE!!!" ;)

Sarah's looking awesome, as usual!

I will miss Maria (and Alan and Chrissie) but I'm all about giving the new girl a shot-Yay, Rani!!! (wow, she's tall!)

I can't wait for series 2!!!!

See, as much as I loved mini-Sarah Jane Maria and will miss her, THIS is why I refuse to hold it against Rani, because while Rose was a reasonably good companion (she clicked more with Nine than Ten, in my opinion), I LOVED Martha, and felt sad on her behalf that a number of people seemed to hold it against her for not being Rose (not saying YOU'RE doing that, mind you, but a number of fans did).

After all, to bring this back onto topic a bit more, I loved loved LOVED Sarah Jane in the original series, but I NEVER held it against Leela for "taking her place."

As long as Maria gets a proper, loving send-off that leaves the door open for her possible return, then I hope that Rani can find herself welcomed by the fans, and by Sarah Jane, for whatever positive traits she might bring to the table (it's hard to say what those might be, since we know nothing about her, but you get my point).

Both Sarah Jane and the Doctor should have hearts big enough for more than one companion, no matter which ones are our favorites. :)

It's funny about the cliche thing- I haven't met anyone my age (27) or younger named Rani, more often it's different constructions of that name... But can I say that this time it's really heartwarming to see a Rani played by an actual South Asian actress?

I don't know about names- we've had 3 unrelated Joneses on Torchwood. And then there is the whole Smith thing. So it might not be a Timelord thing.

But the pictures are interesting- thanks for posting! I can't wait to see what they do- I've enjoyed it so far, so I'm not going to assume the worst. I liked the progression in maturity and experience we've seen in the Doctor's companions, so I'm not complaining there.

Can I say one thing- I hope this transition will allow us to see some more bonding between Sarah Jane and Luke. Those few scenes we got in season one were great!

Rani? For god's sake, they know they can't pick a name like that without the whole of fandom going mental. Perhaps it's just too much of a red herring.

It's too significant for me to let go though... not that many of the CBBC audience will be familiar with the former Kate O'Mara character. It'd just be an interesting direction. Rani is THE RANI... woo.
