One of my very best friends has had to evacuate her home :( It is still worth going north if you need relief from heat/smoke/dryness...for my fellow lung-challenged folks. Santa Maria 58 degrees 90% humidity fog. Santa Barbara 75 degrees 39% humidity smoky air. Latest news: *Excellent summary of available info -- EdHat, Twitter, Independent, other media sources etc. from Doc Searls *
In addition, SB County now has a page up on the fire. I will be part of the Twitter brigade for as long as I can tonight, passing on the latest updates in the hope of helping those affected. I would invite folks who needed to do so to crash here but despite what the news says, there is flu in SB county because I have it! I don't know what KIND of flu because no one has tested me but it's been horrible and no one needs it on top of an evacuation... Back to the fire. Latest: 2000 homes threatened, 1000 evacuated. There are road and school closures and shelters have been set up. There are places to evacuate animals. If you are in the Santa Barbara area please stay informed for your safety.

Another fire in Santa Barbara. We're having micro-climate differences right now so it is actually cool where I am. I read the fire is in San Roque Canyon. I'm sure I'll find out more on Twitter. I can't believe this.
This looks like a pretty cool, worldwide event...
100 Hours of Astronomy
Believe it or not, fellow locals, our little old Santa Barbara is participating:
Telescopes at Paseo Mistakeo Paseo Nuevo (bad local joke, sorry, but I don't think everyone remembers the real name sometimes!)
Solar Viewing and Children's Astronomy Art Exhibit and a "downtown event" sponsored by the Museum of Natural History
There will be a way cool webcast from observatories around the world
Fellow Twitterers, check this out.
Fans of UKIRT (you know who you are), go here!
Please correct me or tell me to add anything (MIGRAINE!!! all help appreciated!!!)
I'll x-post in two local LJ comms and email the Goleta 4H Club but please pass it on to anywhere you think anyone might want to hear about it.
I MAY try to see the children's art stuff Thurs evening in SB but that shall depend on how much my foot liked my day in SB :) E me or call my cell if you might wanna meet up...

I am wondering if anyone here works at Marian Medical Center or Marian Extended Care. I just got hired in January and I need to finish enrolling in the medical insurance thing. I need to pick a PCP but I live in Lompoc and have never heard of any of the doctors on the list for the EPO plan. Can anyone recommend a doctor? I have PCOS, so I would like a doctor that actually knows what that is.
Our scheduled speaker, a pharmacist, could not come tonight, so the area's newest rheumatologist, Dr. Deneen DiCarlo, is filling in instead. I know many people wanted to meet her, so I'm sending out this last-minute announcement! Tell a friend!

Does anyone know when the Allan Hancock College Spring Semester class schedule will come out? Or when we will be able to sign up for classes?

My ears hurt. My head hurts. I guess they are rehearsing. It is SO LOUD. I think we should be warned ahead of time. I don't have any earplugs on hand. Can I sue somebody? Anyway I assume the unbearable noise is from these guys: http://www.smmof.org/flyin.htmlI'd much rather GO to the show than suffer under the flight pattern!

Here is where you can see where the epicenter was and go to a form to fill out and give the scientists information. If you felt it, please do this; it helps to learn more about earthquakes... http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/shake/ca/

Can someone recommend good body piercers in the Santa Maria/Lompoc/Buellton/Arroyo Grande area? Could you also include hours of operation and some prices? Thanks.

Hi everyone. I live in Michigan and my mom lives in Lompoc California. I'm thinking of moving out there. I want to be by her but not IN Lompoc. I was thinking Santa Maria. Can you guys tell me about the schools there? I've tried doing some searches but I can't really find anything. I have a child that will be in 1st grade so I'm wondering how the Elem schools are. Also how far is Santa Maria from the Pacific Ocean? What is the closest beach? When I'm looking on maps all I can seem to narrow it down to is Pismo. I'd like to be within 10 minutes of the beach. Are there any other cities within 30 minutes of Lompoc that you can recommend that has good schools, rentals around $1200-$1700 per month and within 10 minutes of the beach?

I'm going to be in that area in December. As you may know, it's hard to look for a discount hotels over the internet or in travel magazines. Most nice Mom & Pop places can't advertise nation wide. I want to stay either in Santa Maria or in the smaller cities of Santa Barbara County near Santa maria. I'm looking for something clean with some kind of breakfast served. Internet access a plus. Anything between $19.99 (rare) to $49.99 a night is fine. Thanks!

Right now in my literature class we are reading/discussing a book called The Cocaine Chronicles. We are focusing on addiction and it's many consequences. Would anyone be willing to share their personal stories whether it be past, present, friends/family, drugs, gambling, sex, etc... I know this can be a personal topic so I apologize for prying, but I'm interested so I can better understand, compare real to the ficticious stories in this compilation, and better understand how to help some family and friends of mine. Thank you. If you like, you can email my at aspiring_starr@yahoo.com |
