Bike-pedestrian accident, 11pm January 8
I was crossing Valencia last night at 16th St at about 11pm. In the middle of the street, I was hit by a cyclist. Both of us had a green light but the cyclist was turning left and said that he hit me because he didn't see me. I saw two cyclists coming but only realized at the last second that the first one was actually heading right for me. I think I was hit by his body because it felt like being slugged really hard. I fell backward and hit my head on the asphalt.

The cyclist stopped and introduced himself as Patrick. He was dark-haired, fair-skinned, with a long oval face, wearing a black cap with a small brim. He may have a beard. I was wearing a long purple coat and am brown-haired and freckled. I was with two guys, one tall with dark brown hair and one of medium height with sandy brown hair, wearing a hat. Patrick was with a woman whose description I don't recall. Both were riding the type of road bike commonly seen in the Mission. Unfortunately I was not completely on top of things, having just hit my head, and was tired and wanted to get out of there, so I neglected to exchange full contact information with Patrick.

I'm doing okay this morning and just have some bad bruises, a bit of swelling, and an area of the back of my scalp that's injured. Nothing seems to be serious, but in case anything comes up, I would like to get Patrick's full name and contact info, and the names and contact info of anyone who saw this accident.

If you have any information, particularly if you are Patrick or know him, please send me email at polyhymnia@livejournal.com; I would really appreciate it.

I was about to make a joke about you needing to wear both front and rear lights when walking, but it sounds like it was not a pleasant experience, so I won't.

It wasn't a pleasant experience, but I have an ongoing mental joke about wearing helmets while walking vs. while bicycling, so I appreciate the impulse. :-)

two places you might try and post this to get better access
1. the sfbike listserve (its an email listserve you sign up for)
2. the bike shops along valencia where most of said cyclists will stop at some point

you might be SOL since most bicyclists don't have insurance. :/ I hope you feel better!

Sounds like my doppelganger. It's where I live. If there's nothing permanent, don't worry about it- doesn't sound like he had any problems.

I think a lot of bikers in this city are dicks. I'm sorry you were hit. I do believe if a cop had been around, he could have gotten a ticket - my cousin used to get speeding tickets on his bike all the time.

You might also try rants and raves on craigslist... however (un)helpful it might be, lots of people will read it.
