"Geki" literally means theater and jidai geki generally refers to all Japanese movies set before 1868, when Japan's modern era began with the Meiji Restoration. Within this broad title lies three sub-genres including the sengoku jidai that depicts Sengoku period films (1490-1600), the ken geki or sword fighting films that are also known as chambara films, and the yakuza geki or gangster films. But since varying degrees of sword fighting is a common element in all of these sub-genres, sticking to jidai geki when referring to period films depicting samurai or swordplay is appropriate."For those curious about the genre, it's history, and movies within it, please take a look at the following articles.
