Okay! Got the dumb little tweak done. it shouldn't have taken so long, but never underestimate the power of procrastination.

There is now an off-duty guard who appears in the tavern during a few hours of the night. i thought this might spice things up a bit. she also has a very quick miniquest involved for a doll. no killing even required! more may be done with her in terms of miniquests later, but for the moment it's just a real quick fetch-quest.

also: if you notice a spell isn't working, please tell me. i did some edits to the commands, but the 'fun' thing with smaug is that unless you edit the hard code for them, it tends to cause a lot of bugs. and i used their online edit system so...SMAUG! anyway, if you find a spell that isn't working, give me word and i'll try to repair it. until i get back my main laptop, i haven't got all the files needed for editing on-hand. if i'm not online, you can always email me at z AT demon-sushi DOT com.

anyway! the RP PROMPT this week relates to the guard. real simple, no frills, here it is:

Guards sometimes come into the tavern to relax too. What's going on with their shifts? Are they recruiting?
Have they seen anything interesting lately, have anything to report? Maybe they're related to someone
you know, maybe not. But they're Tek citizens too. What news do they have?

added khtall's gaki-bandaid :B sorry it took so long, i didn't get a lot of sleep the past few days and it all caught up to me last night.

anyway gaki should be just fine now. no more literal divide by zero crashes :D ahahahaha...ha. here's how khtall described it to brass, if that code was over your head:

It's trying to calculate the mana cost, which is what it figures out the cost in blood from.

It takes the maximum of a) the minimum mana cost, and b) the explodey math up above (100 / 2 + level - level you get the spell at).

So at level 29, trying to use a level 31 spell, it tries to compare the minimum cost (whatever it is) with 100 / (2 + 29 - 31) and divides by zero and destroys the universe.

codewarrior was codewarring tonight~

some people noticed when you remort gaki, it doesn't reset your blood. well, blood now resets. if you remorted from gaki to gaki, please speak up so your blood can be fixed.

we also tested the alleged crash which was connected to remorts using mistwalk, but couldn't reproduce the crash. as such, we're inclined to think it was something else, what with SMAUG being a house of matchsticks :B

khtall also fixed a weird bug that RPers with pets/familiars have probably noticed.

before, if you ever ordered your pet to do anything containing the letters "mp", you'd be told "no..i don't think so." this is due to an old, old SMAUG bug that was probably exploited on RoD. we figured out why it was used and repaired it. now, unless you order your pet to (for some reason) MPsomething, you should be able to order your pet to emote anything. So thumping, humping, bumping, clomping, stomping, whomping, and pumping are all fair game for your pets to emote. wait, that makes it all sound dirty D:

okay guys we just discovered a bug that can lose you items so listen up!

this bug relates to lockers left open on reboot. let me explain the scenario in which the problem occurs:

let's say elan has a locker, and it has 6 deathsticks inside. elan goes on a trip to nazo and picks up 2 rancor nail blades. elan comes home, and opens his locker and puts the nail blades inside. now the locker contains 6 deathsticks and 2 nail blades. he then walks away, leaving the locker open. the game then reboots.

i know this sounds like a math problem but bear with me, because once the game comes back and elan checks his locker again he will only find the 6 deathsticks.

the 2 nailblades are gone. where have they gone? into oblivion, into the code, into SMAUG. any new item you put in a locker WITHOUT CLOSING THE LOCKER will be lost if the locker is left open on reboot. i am explaining this not only because it's a good bug to be aware of but because a few days ago we had a spook with Mysterious Missing Locker Items and i don't want to see people pointing fingers at one another accusing them of swiping locker contents when it was actually a game bug.

if you've been hit by this bug and lost something important, by all means come get me. if you find someone's locker left open prior to reboot with no sign of them or an immortal on to close it, look inside and copy the contents into a note file and ask them (or an immortal) about it later so we can check and see if any items disappeared.

and now, back to drawing nikitaks with owls strapped to their chests!

minor tweaking...

khtall has been doing some work on the way gaki get blood, so if all goes well in the near future gaki will be able to get items that buff their max blood...or even train it!

all the keys in the pyramid will no longer disappear when you quit the game (they'll stay in your inv)

hightower no longer drops ten zillion collars when you kill him

banana ghosts can no longer crash the entire game with their RECKLESS RHUMBAING

aaaaaaaaaand i updated the wanted area list for interested parties.

ENJOY THIS MASSIVE POST THAT'S BEEN A LONG TIME COMING!

sorry for the radio silence guys. i've been psychoticly busy lately and even if i have been doing things, i haven't had a chance to come back and tell you about it :B

new maps:
the wastelands, the thieves' forest, the mayor's office (this is my building map, it's NOT clean), the lizardman port, crateria and the cloud sea!
HUGE thanks to nical, keech, rachella and roren for their infinate patience and care in all these maps. be sure to thank and compliment them when you see them!

new art is up by me, brass, chukotto, hatz, cypress, kilo, maniac/roren, tarendol, tcarah/greenbear, amred and TAV :D

glory for the catacombs quest has been awarded! some people did not get glory but MOST did. if you really, really want glory but you weren't awarded any  just come talk to me and we'll see if we can work something out.

new skill:
-call familiar finally works for druids! rock.

bug fixes:
-the scholars once again speak all languages. ayep.

tweaks:
-the pooka morph strider is completed.

khtall and i have moved our chewing on the call familiar code over to minisabrous (aka sabrous in a bottle) trying to figure out why it blows up 300 ways when you so much as fart funny.

best case scenerio: khtall is able to fix it.
worst case scenario: khtall can't fix it, so druids don't get summon familiar in the end.

most likely scenerio: tochi makes a lot of random shots in the dark as to what's causing it, khtall has a great revelation and patches some previously unnoticed huge hole in SMAUG's code, and eventually we THINK we have it fixed, only for it to find a new way to blow up on is 8D

either way it's safe to log in, we'll no longer be screwing with summon familiar on sab proper. however, we did get a weird bug related to an item earlier. so i can't PROMISE that we won't go down becuase quite honestly we have no idea what caused it and can't seem to recreate it since we have zero zilch zip clues to go on. however, since we can't seem to recreate the bug, chances are neither will you. so all's safe.

summation: call familiar is screwy and we're trying to fix it

all work now. no fears. go ahead and use them.

call familiar is still out until we can figure out how to safely dispose of familiars when a character quits.

sacrified furniture you were sitting on will no longer cause a crash <- this bug was found and fixed just a few hours ago.

on that note:
reporting a bug and complaining about a bug are two different things. a complaint is when you go on chat and say to no one in particular 'SIGHHHH i lost ALL my items in a BUG!' or 'SIIIIIIIGH i'm STUCK in the PIGEON because of a BUG' neither of these help anyone because first of all, you're not telling anyone who can help you (you're just telling the entire game for sympathy) and secondly, they contain next to no information on the bug.

a report is when you come to an immortal (or to the codewarrior herself) and say 'hey, i don't think XYZ is working. when i try it, LMN happens.' or, 'i was doing PDQ, and HRT happened. i think it's a bug.' these are reports because they contain actual information. they tell us WHAT'S broken and exactly HOW you think it's broken. don't feel bad about reporting bugs, and don't feel bad if your report turns out not to be a bug. we'd rather have things reported properly and be able to say 'oh that's not a bug' than only hear about it via the grapevine that someone was complaining and have to go ferreting out what went wrong.

it's a lot like the difference of going to the doctor, and complaining at work. walking around going 'auuuuuuuugh i don't feel good waaaaaaaaa' doesn't help anyone, especially you. going to the doctor and saying 'i don't feel good. i'm throwing up and i have a fever. i ate an old can of oysters last night. is it food poisoning?' contains lots of relevent information and is given to someone who can actually do something about your problem.

bugs are sabrous' salmonella. the codewarrior and gods are the quacks doctors. so, when you think you've found a bug, try to think of reporting it as telling the doctor what's wrong. if you actually want the bugs fixed, don't complain, report.

on that note, i'm taking my USB drive to work today, so in all hopes, we'll have some helpfiles for the new stuff soon.

the command list is currently screwing up when it attempts to load. this is because of flags. for some reason. because this is smaug code and nothing makes any sense.

we're trying to track down the problem but it's like trying to find a giraffe by following pieces of HAM that have been THROWN INTO A TREE. NOT BY THE GIRAFFE. if this anaology makes no sense then you understand my feelings on this matter exactly

in the meantime.
run revert and roleplay are all not working. i can't. fix. run. or. revert.

complaining about it does NOT help us, motivate us, or psyche us up.

well, it's quite seriously that time again :o time for the tweak update. dananananana TWEAAAAAAAAAKS!

for pookas:
-you now have the sex change spell
-knock spell removed

general tweaks:
-polymorph costs less mana
-poisoned weapon now echoes the damage done
-drug quest finally completed.
-nazo's gold nerfed. sorry, but there was no need for him to have so much :B
-tek's level range dropped to about 3 to 15 in shops
-ork's level range moved to between 25 and 35 in shops
-small tweak to the pourra mane item

-when reverting a morph mana won't go negative. NICE HUH :D

-glory houses can built between vnums 500 and 599. the zone is homes.are
    be sure that when doing player housing you remove the appropriate glory from the players with qpset take (name) (number of glory taken)

doing very, very minor bugfixing. also some quest info here :B

minor bugfixing:
noma's mirror, dapper dan hair treatment and perfume all actually cast their respective spells again. lolwoopth.

you asked for it so...
-added a hurricane social (brass!)
-added a noodle social (?? i forget who)
-added a 'tak milk seller in the sandbox back alley (HALF THE MAFIA)


now, on to the matter of quest stuff

THE CATACOMBS QUEST WILL FINISH THIS WEEKEND. it will only run friday because i hardly have my stuff unpacked here :< i'm really sorry, but there should be plenty of runs. here are the times. times are in EST (eastern standard time) and thusly the quest is friday, june 8th.
5.30pm
7pm
9pm
12 midnight

there will also be a trial run early on friday morning. trial run people still get glory, but keep in mind it's the 'rough run' of the quest. the trail run will be at: 8AM friday morning.

also, if you were involved in the KAZZA QUEST, please email me at z@demon-sushi.com! the logfiles have proved denser than someone trying to sup cor out of a deathtrap, so we're just going to reward based on the honor system. email me your character name you used in the kazza quest.

also tarendol is working on writing up some info about the 'unoffical' RPs that happen (ie, general rules of thumb or common things done by it) for people who want to jump on in and join. so look forward to that showing up sometime in the future. :v

on my great campaign to give areas mobs which have proper races and jobs, the following areas have been fixed up:
ice mountain, lizardman seaport, the chuian tree, verdi forest, the inhuman ghetto, the myche encampment, the cloud sea, peen canyon, stormy plataue (this was done anyway i just tweaked it).

in terms of bugs only one's really been reported and that's that the Ew Ork blacksmith wouldn't fix things. well, the blacksmith's fixed. so that's done anyway. won't you?

the site has new art by drayco, phil, jakrian, locard, music by kilo, brass, cypress, greenbear, tavanaka, tarendol, yours-truly and metrazol

there's also a brand new map in the maps folder by rach of the inhuman catacombs. very handy, and quite spoiler-free.

this week's featured art isssss )

the major tweak is that now when you type gibberish or nonsense commands you get random messages. thank khtall |3 as usual. NOTE: the "HATS GOING ON" thing is not a typo. the function itself is called hatsgoingon. THIS IS A JOKE. NOT A TYPO.

later today i am hoping to have the slists for jobs available on the site. but that's for later.

time for TOCHI'S TWEAKS! with special guest star KHTALL!

TWEAKED!
-create food now gives you a variety of food items. handy! thanks to redmoon for this idea!
-invis players chatting will appear in parenthesis. helps keep you from giving away people who were trying to be sneaky :o ie, (Tochi) chats, 'HAY GUYS SUP LOL'
-skins will now include the player's name as a keyword.
-several areas now have their NPCs properly given races/classes. this is my next big project in terms of tweaks. current areas that were fixed were North Tek, the NT graveyard, the NT training arena, the NT mansion, the sun temple, the wastelands and rock river.

bugfixes
-the shelf of herbs (it unfixed itself?) is now fixed
-the east NT gate (it also unfixed itself) now should remain open
-the miner's helm (ALSO UNFIXED ITSELF) should now be gettable.
-newbies should have chat auto-turned off at the start of the newb area, and turned back on at the end (ALSO UNFIXED ITSELF)
-bs/backstab changed around. i kind of uh :B mixed up my fix there last week. so smart. now only people with the skill can use it.

we're also working on a tweak for the imms to be able to see when characters sneak in and out of rooms, but it's not ready yet.

quick wham-bam thank-you ma'am bug fix & tweak list before i head out to the meeting :v

-newb area items buyable (theoretically)
-candle helm in nikitak mines gettable
-lookout point enables look-out-ing into the north wastelands
-skeith can see invis items now to repair them
-howler hide boots have boots as a keyword
-cattails now have cattails as a keyword (they had cattail before...added the s)
-gypsy shelf no longer full o' herbs
-cleaned up some NT guards and fixed the east gate
-orange herbs now have keywords relating to orange and herb
-petfind changed to findpet so you can use the pet social again
-avatar mana no longer drops to 1 on death (in RoD apparently naked mages were a big issue :B)
-diablo is now immune to charm. since SOMEONE kept abusing it by walking him around town into RP areas...

for wannabe coder amusement, the reason is that backstab was never declared in commands.dat while bs was. THANKS SMAUG CODERS!

OW yet another day of coding like a loony. not quite the amount of spells as last time, buuuut you shouldn't be too disappointed.

tweaks:
ventriloquate is actually awesome and cool and a ton of fun now. totally tweaked. you can c vent (object) or c vent (living thing). depending on what you cast it on, it might even speak in its own particular way. ie, a spring burbbles "sup i am a spring". also immortals can now see WHO is casting vent.
crocodile skin was nerfed. if you have a croc skin item, please turn it in to the imms. sorry bout that.
clan donation items SHOULD stay after reboot. i haven't really tested this, but hopefully your storeroom will uh. be useful now.

new skills:
fear spell has been given to spies. this is a spell which allows you to basicly terrify your enemy into fleeing...but it has a very low chance of working. goodluck. :o
charge skill given to warriors and paladins. MOUNT A STEED. GET A LANCE (from the myche encampment). CHAAAAAAAAAAAAARGE ENEMY!

new commands:
BANKS! tired of area economy robbing you? tired of THIEVES robbing you? head on up to the chuian tree and use the bank commands to deposit, withdraw or check your balance. hot.
Tattoos? some of you may remember the tattoos seldar created in sab1. well, these aren't quite the same (most notable difference being only you can see your tattoos, at the moment). type tattoo outside a tatt shop to see what ones you have. go to a tattoo shop (arr ye olde lizport has one) and type tattoo there to see a list. each tattoo gives you a permabuff to your stats, but you can only get a tattoo one time. you can have all six, but can't duplicate. i dunno if i'm making any sense, i'm kind of running on empty and have been a while now 8D

hey immortals, did you know mobs had all these flags? cause i sure didn't. like whoa. )

on the note of my horrid spelling, i'd just like to point something out. when i started chewing on the charge code to install it, there was a massive spelling error. 'upon' (as in, upon your steed) was spelled 'apon'. SO DONT YOU SASS ME, YOUNGUN.

there's a few more things yet coming before i calm down and end this madness. but for the time being, i really need to shut off my brain before it burns out in a gigantic brilliant blue flame of sparks. and everyone thank khtall for being the one to tell my stupidtired self obvious things like 'you forgot a semicolon there.' because khtall smert. :>

okay droogs, hold onto your butts cause this is a

FREAKING HUGE UPDATE



first, our new commands are: revert, land, run and train. now, what are these?
revert allows you to revert from a polymorph at will. syntax is just "revert"
land cancels any float/fly spell on you. good for quickadepting...or drowning/falling for fun. syntax "land"
run makes you ZOOM as many rooms in any given direction as you can possibly go. when you run out of moves, or rooms, you'll stop. mind the MASSIVE ROOMS WOOSHING BY! thanks to khtall for helping this one out. syntax is "run (direction)"
train is the one i think you're all gonna like. see, you can spend your extra practice points...to increase your stats. your hp. your move. your mana. it's all fair game, for the right amount of pr. find one of the two trainers in the game who allow this (the razordemon trainer and the chuian dojo trainer) and type "train (stat/mana/whatever)" gaki, you can NOT train up your blood. i'll see if i can tweak it later to include you.

NOW THEN. also, tweaked and changed some various skills.
sharpen has been added as a skill for thieves, warriors and paladins. it allows you to (with the right item, a whetstone, and the right dex) to sharpen weapons to a very fine edge and make them mad more dangerous than before.
backstab was nerfed on spies. i'm sorry guys, but a nerfing we did go.
cook was given to spies and monks. SHUT UP THE BOTH OF YOU. ALL OTHER CLASSES GET IT.
monks now get create fire...which lets them actually make USE of that high level brew ability.
listen is a skill now available to monks, spies and thieves...spies had detect hidden and detect invis pushed a bit further up in levels for it though. type listen (direction) and listen to a nearby room for clues to hidden/invis monsters there.
study is a skill for monks and clerics, which enables you to take a scroll, wand or magic staff, STUDY it, and learn a spell from it that you ordinarily wouldn't learn some other way. keep in mind 'wands' can be anything from blink sticks to books of healing. the IDENTIFY spell will help you out here.
identify now tells you the actual weapontype of a weapon when you cast it. THE END OF PEOPLE ASKING FOREVER!! (not)
two new skills were added to monk, along with some tweaks to the multi-hit skill levels. but this is only relevent to betas.

bugfixed and tweaked were the following:
lilacs are gettable. this time. i swear.
the worm is hopefully foolproof. this time. i swear.
cannoli is now spelled correctly. according to tarendol. BLAME HIM!
the inkwell now responds to the keywords ink, well, and INKWELL
pawn shop owners were seriously buffed. i do not advise tangling.
the underworld now mentions about how to empty drink containers.
the hallucinatory panties now belong to ALTAIR :D

also, us immortals have decided we will reward freelance roleplaying.  there will be a community created for it, but if you post your roleplay logs there, the gods will reward the involved parties with practice sessions. THIS IS EXTREMELY HANDY, CONSIDERING THE STAT TRAINING CODE IMPLIMENTED REQUIRES PRACTICE SESSIONS AND A LOT OF THEM. so hey, now you have a reason to RP!

everyone give khtall and velesti huge freaking rounds of applause for helping me out with a mess of this stuff. there's plenty of other things i'd like to add or tweak, and i am making my way through such things now...buuuut i'm burning out for a night. yes. a night. yes. all of this, in one night. AND THAT, LADIES AND GERMS, IS WORKAHOLISM. i still need to do helpfiles for most of these new commands. D'OH!

Well folks welcome to another lovely saturday addition of What's New in Sabrous :o

first off, the website has a mahvelous art dump going on. new art by greenbear, ruck, tav, raizy, cypress, raln and... yours truly have all been uploaded. also! there've been quite a few sabrous paintchats, so there's now also a paintchat subfolder for your viewing pleasure. ;3 there's also now a permalink to the paintchat.

In terms of the actual game, there've been a few tweaks.

When you're battling now, you may notice that both you and the enemy have critical hits. a critical hit does double the regular damage...but ocassionally still misses. should spice up your battles a bit.

also there's now a petfind command. this will help you find...your...pet. once it gets lost. see help petfind for more informations.

edits to helpfiles include polymorph (there is no revert command, so removed the info on it), glory and quests.

tweaks included the sewer worm...before you could use it even if you hadn't perfected mount. NOW YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE WORM. also tweaked was the sabrecat skull item. also Death now has a clause in the newb area to help you if you can't find the underworld staff. naughty underworld!

Altair brought it right back up after the crash today, so in all likelyhood nobody even noticed. The problem should seriously be fixed now. Hang onto your pants for later tonight, when I update with new helpfiles. AND!!

I have decided that since this weekend is a wonderfully Irish holiday...we will be running a miniquest. It's not serious, and glory won't be the reward. Time yet to be announced!

HEY DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN NOW SKIN A CORPSE AND GET ARMOR? only PC corpses. and once you skin it, the corpse disappears...as do all the items inside. so be careful! But wearing your own skin might be handy 8D

i got too tired to do MUCH bug fixing last night (most of them are fairly large undertakings) but here's what's been done so far:

lilacs are now take-able. before they'd stick to the inside of your bag. my bad. :3
the square, which well may be our culprit for the crash, has been tweaked so it HOPEFULLY will no longer cause such a crash.
there are no longer two misty-s in the sandbox. as much as we all enjoy a couple bouncy twins.
players starting in the newb area automatically turn off the chat channel, and have it automatically turned back on upon completion. this should help from getting buried under chatter at peak times.

there may be impromptu quests this weekend, but if you're curious about what (or when) the next big quest will be, it will most likely start on friday the 23rd and run that weekend. oh, you wanted to know about the what? head to the North Tek Note Board one north of the square for a clue... (if you don't know how to use the board, type help note)

hail and hello! it's your weekly update of the website, along with the regular bugfix.

we have a new map by brass! check out his map of the RAZOR DEMON TOWER...this will be important for tomorrow's quest. today's quest. THE QUEST OF THIS WEEKEND.

we also have a lot of new art by players! there's art by greenbear, raizy, maniac, chuko, brass, cypress  and MUSIC by travisuped.

now, let's try something :o a character art showcase. each week i will pick a fanart that shows off someone's character, and showcase it here. this week's winner is... )

now, on to the bug fixes!
you can now access the 2nd level of the north tek gardens from any of the 4 corners.
there are no longer two karl the healers in valburg's training arena.
deadlies should now no longer see the hand of gravoc message...theoretically.
immortals should no longer recieve bug reports related to the sandbox dancers, shady merchant or moon blossom being purged.
immortals now have vnums up to two billion to work in. horray!

a bit later tonight, the intro post for this week's quest will be made and people will begin to gather in the afternoon, EST if they want to participate. this quest will run all weekend and may run more than once. all players are welcome to join, but remember that it is a roleplay excersize! you will not be doing much fighting or bashing, but character interaction. there will be a reward... :O dun dun dunnnn. but i hope people will show up for what will be the first quest :O!!

later on there will be helpfiles related to custom items/bonuses as well as house building. but later.
