Well, another meeting has come and gone, and a good time was had by all. ^_^
densetsujin, Trent and I got things set up bright and early at Dragon's Lair (coincidentally in Room 2 again, heh), and we started the meeting with another old school anime opening credits loop. Then it was on to regular programming all with a time travel theme, starting with Shin Kimagure Orange Road, followed by Time Stranger.
There was a short intermission where we showed more openings, then we all braced ourselves for "The Horror That Almost Was", also known as Saban's live action Sailor Moon proposal (circa 1994, highly reminiscent of both Saved By The Bell and She-Ra), and Doozy-Bots (the 1991 attempt to pitch Super Deformed Gundam to unsuspecting American TV producers). I believe we are all grateful that these things never came to pass, but also grateful that they were preserved for all time, so we can point and laugh at them. (Though, I may never get that terrible Sailor Moon song out of my head... "She's just your average 16 year old girl! SAILOR! SAILOR MOON! She's gonna come and save the world! SAILOR! SAILOR MOON!" Cue the dancing girl in the wheelchair...)
After the horror, we cleansed our palates with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. A brief interlude of more credits, and we finished up with the Time Bokan OVA.
We had about 15-16 attendees throughout the scheduled meeting time, nice and cozy. Lots of old friends, and a couple of new faces. ^_^ We were also joined by a couple of the ACES officers, Miyu and Chris, which was a pleasure. Reminded us of the old days in 1996-1999, when we used to regularly have visitors from the UT Austin anime club, the California chapters of the C/FO and the Dallas and Houston area anime clubs. It's always great to see people from other clubs and hang out together!
We're busy putting together the theme for the next meeting (well, we have themes for six or seven meetings already, the hard part is deciding which to pick...), but already have a date: May 23rd, so as not to conflict with A-Kon (since pretty much all SAAS officer types will be there instead of here...) Mark those calendars now!
Also, SAAS now has a Facebook groups page! Feel free to join it if you are on Facebook!

Our 100th meeting (and first new one in years) went off today without a hitch!
densetsujin, Silent Alex and
denshousha set everything up bright and early at Dragon's Lair (in Game Room 2), and the showing started promptly at 11:00, after a good half an hour or so of various old school anime opening and closing credits. We had about 15 people attending throughout the scheduled time, and even ran past the scheduled ending time of 5:00 pm a bit. It was great seeing so many old friends again! (And big thanks to Pat for bringing the delicious cookies!)
Here's what we showed:
Theme: Otaku Power!
--Daicon III and Daicon IV animations (produced for the Japanese SF convention Daicon in 1981 and 1983 by a group of fans who would later form Gainax)
--3D Gundam (a Japanese fan-made stop motion video from the very early 80's)
--Otaku No Video (the "true" story of Gainax Productions)
--Densha Otoko (live action j-drama)
--Tatsunoko Best Selection (a collection of openings from classic Tatsunoko shows of the 60's and 70's)
Overall, it was a pleasant, relaxing and casual event. Lots of nice reminiscing and lots of laughs. ^_^
We're planning the next meeting for April (same Bat-time, same Bat-channel), so watch this space for the date!

This time for real!
Rumblings are happening, and there may be an actual SAAS event sometime in the near future. Mostly because
densetsujin and I (and Kyle the Silent) have wondered what it would be like again. Yeah, considering our last actual anime meeting was in 2003 (or '04, I can't remember) and the last SAAS event was some time in 2005, it's been a while...
Watch this space for more news, as it develops. We may regain control of our senses before we commit anime clubbing again. ^_~

And it's by none other than Gorillaz creators Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn! If that wasn't neat enough, it's also inspired by the Journey to the West (Saiyuki) story, featuring the Monkey King, Pigsy and uh, that other guy who is a sand demon (Sandy) in some TV versions and a water demon (kappa) in other versions...
Check out the animation here!
Of course, it can't possibly be as cool as the 1970's Japanese live action version (Monkey Magic, or just Monkey in English), because that version has the most awesome disco theme song ever. (Which is featured as an end credits song in the anime Lucky Star, in an abridged form anyway!)

Just wanted to do a quick post to let people know that there is a newish anime meet-up group in town calling themselves the San Antonio Anime Society-- or SAAS. ^_^; Apparently, they started in January 2008, and from what I am given to understand, they are new to the area and probably don't realize there was a club here that originally started in 1995 that used to use the afore-mentioned acronym... though we were the San Antonio Animation Society. (You say anime, I say animation, let's call the whole thing off...)
But, just in case anyone is getting excited about the return of our old-school SAAS: no, it's not me, I didn't have anything to do with it. ^_^;
Big thanks to
densetsujin for hipping me to the existence of the other SAAS.
Oh and in other weird SAAS-like "news"- in packing to move apartments this weekend, I discovered what I think was the final SAAS schedule notebook, featuring the anime schedules from meetings dating up to the ripe old date of December 2003. Ah, those heady days when we were busily working through series like Revolutionary Girl Utena, Clamp School Detectives, Future Boy Conan and the like!
--Elin
EDIT TO ADD: We're not associated with the other SAAS, and I am a bit concerned that they are using our acronym, I guess in the hopes of gaining something by the association. They aren't us, though. If it continues, I will probably ask them to change the name, since that would be the polite thing to do. After all, when I formed SAAS, I couldn't call it FAST (Fans of Anime in South Texas) or C/FO (Cartoon/Fantasy Organization), the names of the previous two clubs in San Antonio.
