Roy's Big Burger closing
Bad news! I was at Roy's Big Burger today and there is a sign up that they will be closing for good on April 9th. It doesn't appear they are going out of business...the lady is just tired of making burgers after 38 years. I can't fault her for that, but I'm still disappointed. Great burgers, and one of the few places that still has one of those ice machines that makes that small crumbled ice.

So, go by there while you still can!

Anyone know of alternatives? I can't take much more...first Zippy's on the Boulevard closed, and now this. The only other similar kind of place I know of is Sam's Burgers on Route 1, but I don't like their burgers as much.

I'm going there tomorrow. Do they accept credit card?

Nope, I remember seeing two signs there today that said cash only...

There's this place on Broad St. not too far from Libbie, called the Boardwalk. I hear they rule in hot dogs, may have burgers as well, I have not tried it though. Don't know of any other burger place but Sam's. I love Sam's, mmm.

Shame about Roy's- I just discovered it recently :(

Oh man...I went to Boardwalk a few weeks ago and it was amazing. I didn't see any burgers on the list, but if you're in the mood for hot dogs, don't go anywhere else.

It's on Lakeside Ave, pretty much next to Bryant Park. Next to a muffler shop. You should try it.

I'm vegetarian; how are their fries? Do they have veggie burgers?

Oh, shoot...no, their fries are pretty average at best, and they don't have veggie burgers. It's a small place, only about 12 things or so on the menu, and almost all of them have meat.

I will probably be struck down for recommending a chain, but 5 Guys is actually good. Of course this is only in regards to burger quality, if it's atmosphere you're looking for I got nothing.

Yeah, 5 Guys is quite good...and their fries are awesome. But, yeah, I'm hoping to find some other burger places with that mom-n-pop feel. I'm surprised no one's piped up about any on the southside...seems like there would have to be at least one.

On a related note, they have two Sonics while we have zero and that really annoys me.

I suddenly remember the existence of Carytown Burgers and Fries. I only ate from their kiosk back when they were outside VCU, but their main location may contain the hometown feel you seek

ehh I've never cared much for roy's. I've always liked what a burger much much better even though my best friend is disappointed it's not the same as the chain restaurant of the same name from the southern part of the US

i don't understand why people hate on chains. it's food. sometimes it's good. is it elitism or something?
btw i am not a huge 5 guys fan. it's good but in my opinion it's equally good as some other places that serve quality burgers.
