a bad beat for the ages...
i'm sure you've all got a story like this one.

this was a friendly home game. tourney style. $20 buy-in, no rebuys. i'm sitting with about $35 in chips when i get suited A-J Clubs.

i'm on the button so when it comes around, i re-raise hard. a few drop out at this point but four people pay the 300 chips to see the flop.

the flop comes 6-8-9 of clubs. i flopped the nut flush. i raise. two people fold. my buddy's neophyite girlfriend calls me.

the next card is a King of Clubs. she checks. i bet hard. she calls me. again.

the river is a two of hearts. i go all in. she calls me.

now, i'm thinking that she had trips or she hit her flush on fourth street. i've got this so in the bag.

'i've got the nut flush. what do you have?'

'i've got a straight flush...'

bitch was holding 5-7 of clubs! and she called 300 pre-flop!!

after i picked up my jaw off the floor, i proceeded home.

That's not a bad beat. When most of the money went in, you were way behind or drawing dead.

You didn't even have her dominated preflop. You had a 65% chance to win.
On the flop, you have a 0.1% chance to win. (Needing to get both the 10 of clubs and Q of clubs.) On the turn, you were drawing dead.

thing is, by all intents and purposes she shouldn't have stuck around to see the flop.

she called a huge raise pre-flop with a 5-7 suited.

even with a big chip stack, i'd be hard pressed to call that.

the fact that she managed to flop a straight flush was just fucking unbelievable.

It's a tough hand. Most people would go broke on it. But it's not a bad beat.

Right. A bad beat would be having 9h 9d flopping 9s 9c Kc, and running out 8c 6c turn and river. Nothing like being ahead 989-1 when the money goes in and still losing.

Fundamental theorem of poker. You made as many mistakes as she did.

ok, so technically it wasn't a bad beat

i didn't get sucked out.

i was pretty much drawing dead from the flop, but how do i put a newbie player who was calling ridiculous hands earlier in the evening on a straight flush?

there was only one hand on that board that could beat me and it did.

my question to you all is how would you have played it? she didn't check raise me, she was first to act and she checked it to the end. all she did was call my bet. remember this is a girl who's been playing for a month.

wasn't much you could do. sometimes you just end up losing your money.

I'd have gone broke that hand also. That's poker... we all have bad beat stories. Do you want someone to make you feel better? Not gonna happen, especially when you're talking about a $20 'friendly' tournament. I've had far worse situations where I've lost $300-$400 in a single pot.

I really have to question making a big raise with A/J, regardless of the situation. It happened that you flopped the nut flush. I can't even say tho that you misplayed it after the flop - as I said, I'd have gone broke there also.

Heads up, you were ahead preflop 69.1% to 35% on the hand - you want that player calling you preflop. It just happened that she flopped a better hand than you... happens all the time.

I flopped a nut full in a limit game only to be called down (actually he for some reason capped the betting with an underfull) and another guy playing his backdoor perfect-perfect gutshot straight-flush draw.
4 bets with a jack high? GO TEAM!

Who caps the betting in a loose game with an underfull, honestly?
Never mind the 4 card straight flush.
