Bad players and lots of bluffing
I was doing a little rounding this weekend and I got caught up playing a hold em tournament with a bunch of “good ol boys” (that’s code for dumb ass rednecks). I admit most of the time I’m very happy to see horrible players sit down at the table but this was ridiculous. How can you contend with dozens of players like that? That’s just a whole lot of dumb luck you have to dodge!

Anyway...

I felt like I might as well been playing roulette or something. Almost every single one of these 50+ guys had no concept of the game other than seeing it on TV. About half thought it was all about bluffing. Sadly it seemed every time one of these twits got caught with their hand in the cookie jar they got lucky and drew out on ya. That’s how I went out LOL. After the flop I bet my hand and then got raised all in by this really horrible player. I put him on a middle pocket pair because of the way he played it pre flop, which would be in bad shape against me so I called, I had top pair with a good kicker. He had 3s in the pocket! I was shocked because there was nothing but over cards on the board. It was better than I guessed. He was dominated and was a huge dog but alas went runner runner and hit his 3rd 3 and paired the board to fill up with a boat.

My only conclusion was play premium hands and hope for the best, which is what I did. I just wish we were playing a cash game with level blinds…

...I think? LOL

You say you had "top pair good kicker"

That means that you didn't have a pocket pair, right?

Therefore, he was a favorite preflop and his threes managed to hold up against your two overcards.

...no pocket pair. I had two over cards and he was a slight favorite pre flop. there was little betting pre flop hence the reason I was in the hand

all the action was post flop when he was dominated. he had only 2 outs. I actually had 11 outs that would improve my hand which was winning.

so considering that all the aggressive betting happend AFTER the flop it was irrelevant if he was a favorite preflop. He let me catch for cheep. it's more accuret to say his 3s out drew my Qs. he got lucky, that's all I'm saying.

I was just illistrating one exampe of the bad calls. Your not implying I made a bad play of some sort are ya?

How do you figure you were a slight favorite if you had overcards and he had a pocket pair?

Right ;-)

I was a huge favorite AFTER the flop (when I went all in)

I admit it was a coin flip situation with my opponent having a small edge pre flop

but hey it's poker and luck happens... regardless if bad calls are involved or not

Well anyway, I can't tell you much about this type of situation because I almost never play no limit, but I Holdem for Advanced Players has a section on playing in wild games that might be useful in no limit too. Basically, IIRC, they said that when betting is getting capped six-way preflop every hand, you should fold everything except group 1 hands (and maybe group 2 suited connectors), and fold those when you miss the flop too. It's an extremely boring way to play, because you only play MAYBE one hand every fifteen minutes, but you're practically guaranteed to make money.

Yea that was my basic plan and you are right it’s totally mind numbing. It would have been more manageable if it was not a tournament structure where the blinds are forcing larger and larger action each round. For the most part I was playing nothing but suited connecters jack and higher and wired pairs 8 and up. But you’re about right I was playing around one hand every 10-15 minutes or so. Sadly I was not getting a lot of fantastic hands and flops were missing me to often to be productive.

I had one I went all in pre flop and I got not one but two callers. I had Kings in the hole and one guy had 7s and the other had J,10 off. In that hand I was lucky I didn’t get out drawn. The J,10 almost flopped the straight but thank goodness never caught up. So I took one player out and reduced the other’s stack by more that half and tripled up so I was pretty happy about that. Sadly it was all just so I could be eaten away by the blinds later that day.

I guess it's just like that sometimes. All the skill in the world can’t out play dumb luck. Luck is king in the short term

Bad players can drive you insane because they are totally unpredictable.

Totally. In mass numbers what can you do?

Just play your best game and hope for a minimal number of suck outs
