Poker chips
I'm looking to purchase a quality chip set. I want "casino style" chips. When I search online for chips there are so many options for chips of different weights and diameters. What is the "official" weight and size?

That is what I'm mostly looking for, but any recommendations for specific chip sets or companies would also be appreciated.

You want the 39 milimetre, 11.5 gram ones. If you really want to go to the top, google a company called Paulson. They supply a lot of the main casinos and tours, and their position is that most of what the rest of us own is crap in comparison. *shrug*

What is the difference? All I really care about is shape and weight.

If all you care about is shape and weight, he answered your question: 39mm, 11.5 grams (real casino chips range from 10.5-11.5). You can get "dice suited" chips (and similar) anywhere. They are usually described as "clay," "casino," etc even though they're actually made of plastic with a metal insert.

Paulson chips are one of the actual "real casino" chips, but if you can't tell the difference they're not worth the difference in price.

My set was custom made by pokerchips.com, but I've heard that since the poker boom they've been having a lot of trouble keeping up with demand. They aren't quite as nice as paulson chips, but they're a ton nicer than the plastic ones (IMHO).

You can also get cheaper chips, most commonly 8 grams. Still a lot better than ultra-cheap interlocking chips.

They can see through the other players' cards and they whisper what they're holding.

If you're an Ebay shopper, I recommend going there and running a search for poker chips. These days, the market is FLOODED with vendors of the 39mm 11.5g variety, and if you're currently playing with cheapo plastic chips, you'll love the difference. They come in a cool aluminum case. Patternwise, both "Dice" and "Suited" are popular. Paulson may be of superior quality, but with the kind I'm describing you'll already be playing with what looks and feels like authentic casino chips. Leave the rest of your money for your bankroll.

I wasn't being sarcastic; if the higher-end chips don't make a difference to you, then they're not worth the extra money they cost. 95% of people will be fine with 8g or 11g plastic chips, both of which are huge upgrades over plastic interlocking chips.

It's the same reason I don't eat truffles; I am not discerning enough for the price to be worth it.

eBay has tons of mass market chips, and so do tons and tons of different web sites.

There are pros and cons.

Cons:
Expensive. about twice the price of metal-slug-filled chips, many times the price of 8 gram diamond chips.

Not indestructible. Unlike the plastic chips, they can be damaged by liquids, chipped, or cracked by force.

Pros:
They stack better than plastic chips, which usually have a slippery feel. So a nicer texture.

They don't make a metal clanking sound like the metal-slug-filled ones. I would personally rather have the cheapo 8 gram diamonds than listen to that clanking sound.

They are less easy to counterfeit. If someone wants to spend $150 (minimum order) counterfeiting my set of chips (with max chip value $1), more power to 'em. But the mass market chips are available all over the place, and for less than the face value in the games I play.

And finally, the most important reason of all is that I can look down my nose at all the people claiming their injection molded plastic, metal slug centered chips are "real clay." Idiots.
