What is Hoodoo?
"Hoodoo is an American term, originating in the 19th century or earlier, for African-American folk magic.
"Hoodoo consists of a large body of African folkloric practices and beliefs with a considerable admixture of American Indian botanical knowledge and European folklore. Although most of its adherents are black, contrary to popular opinion, it has always been practiced by both whites and blacks in America.

Please remember that hoodoo/rootwork is not a religion; it has definite origins in African spirituality, but it can be practiced by anyone in any religion or no religion. It is simply a magical system. To that end, please try to keep topics confined to hoodoo/rootwork and keep discussions of African-based religions such as Voudon and Santeria to a minimum.
Historically, most rootworkers have been Christian, and there is traditionally a lot of work with the Old Testament and especially the Psalms in rootwork. If you are one of those Pagans who believe that Christianity (and patriarchal monotheism in general) is "The Great Oppressor" (and believe me, I used to be), you may be in the wrong place! You certainly don't have to be Christian to practice hoodoo, but I believe you must make your peace with it before becoming a successful rootworker.
