Hair? Yep.

I colored my hair today. It was actually BAD timing, as I was doing it when Marilyn [info]mistressmarilyn got home from work -- and she's had a sore throat and been pretty allergic, so...

I got a call from the woman who might hire cousin Linda yesterday, looking for a reference. Linda took care of our mother the last years of her life, up until she died. (Linda was a Licensed Vocational Nurse at one point in her life.) This would be a good deal for Linda, as it's a live-in position, so beside her salary, she'd get room and board. (Linda is currently living in a shelter, so this would be ideal.)

Anyway, Linda phoned me today and it looks like she'll probably get the job, assuming she really wants it. She's supposed to go tomorrow to see the routine of care and check out the woman, her husband (who needs care) and their home. I'm certainly wishing the best for her!

I also (finally!!!) ordered the new hard drives for my home desktop PC that I'm going to have Ron install. I wish I'd done that before! They're going to take longer to arrive than my laptop, believe it or not. I'm getting them through NewEgg.Com, using the LINK RON SENT me. That will mean I'll have two 320 gig hard drives (I have a dual hard drive system). Currently my C: drive (system drive) is 40 gigs, and my D: drive (data drive) is 80 gigs -- so you can see the improvement we're talking about!

I really can't wait to get this work done. I've got applications I can't even load right now, because I'm so maxed out...

I did speak to Hector today -- and told him I didn't like to complain, but I had some concerns. He was nice and told me the guys would be here TODAY, which they were. And they really worked their butts off, too, which I was glad to see.

And Marilyn got the pump back into the fountain (harder than hell to do), so we've finally got it working! All I need to do is put the table cloth on the outside table -- then put my rock garden back again (it had to be picked up to do the fence, and is just a total mess). Maybe I can tackle those things tomorrow.

The flowers are already doing well and the yard really looks nice! Yes, photos to follow at some point when it's all done.

Well, it's heading toward 11:00 p.m. and both Marilyn [info]mistressmarilyn and I are beat (and didn't have our usual nap). So I suspect we should be off to bed soon!

Did I mention here that my current medicine has just slews of side effects? I've been noticing a few of those, I'm afraid. (sigh) Oh well. Hopefully this will fix me. (Three more days to go...)

Connie is adjusting very well to her new home, but then again, anything is cushier than hiding in fear underneath a commercial air conditioning unit. She's nearly two pounds in the less than a week she's been here, which is great, as she was only 1 pound, 11 ounces when we adopted her.

In other news, I have just concluded my very first jury duty. I had the misfortune of having actually been selected as a juror, so my one day service became a four day ordeal. It was certainly a good experience, and very educational, but I hope that I don't have to do it again for a very long while.

hahaha, NICK JONAS. I love that he is such a BAD DANCER, like a regular little DUDE. (I think he throws up THE ROCK). So he rocks out a little in the DARK and it's GOOFY. ADORABLE.

And then GARBO. IS SHARING THAT LITTLE MOMENT. WITH HIM. UGH. SO CUTE. And making EYE CONTACT. With this stupid KID who likes BAD MUSIC. And is like, in genuinely rocking out to it.

And Garbo is a GROWN MAN. He should be seeing some good COLLEGE BANDS or something, not listening to Honor Society with Nick Jonas! AHAHA. SO SILLY.

I love it.

* I've been completely apathetic of late regarding this journal, likely because I'm so damn tired and drained from trying to turn my cat's health around. I know all the attention I pay to it and all the effort I put into it must seem ridiculous, and believe me, I'm a little embarrassed about it, but consider my circumstance. I'm alone most of the time, which I generally enjoy, but my two cats are life in the house with me. Without those little life forces, I think my home would quickly feel like a big, empty box, and I would feel trapped in it.

Giving her meds has been damn near impossible. Name the method, and I'll tell you it didn't work. My left shoulder and bicep have no fewer than five scratches from her flailings (and my nose has a tiny one). I even took her back to the vet just so they could show me how to do it, and naturally, she was absolutely placid for them. *rolls eyes* Two nights ago, I had her wrapped in a towel and tucked under my left arm, and managed to get 3/4 of the syringe of meds into her mouth, but when I let her go, I noticed that she'd been so scared that she peed on the towel. That was it. Game over. All the frustration and worry loosed itself in a flurry of tears.

Then, a miracle. I found something called Pill Pockets at Petsmart today. They're moist cat treats with a tiny hole in the center. You cram the pill in, pinch the side shut, and give it to kitty. Skeptical though I was, I bought them. And 'lo. It worked. She mustn't have bit into the pill (it's super bitter, apparently), because she at the whole thing. If she ever does bite into it, I'm sure she'll abandon the treat uneaten, but still. I'm hopeful. Especially since she seems to have rounded a corner. Since last night she's been eating like a horse, and even drank a little water today. She's no longer constantly lethargic, and seems more herself. Once again, I'm hopeful. Meds or no, I'd like to think the hand of God is involved too.

* Daughtry's new CD, "Leave This Town" is drowning in Awesome. Chris' voice is ridiculous. Sick even. Best music of the year (because neither Seth Lakeman or U2 had new stuff).

* I've been reading about morality in the catechism today. Very interesting. Treading into philosophical waters. Subjects covered include The Morality of Human Acts, The Morality of the Passions, and Moral Conscience. Moral conscience was particularly interesting. And beautiful. Deep within his conscience man discovers a law which he has not laid upon himself but which he must obey. Its voice, ever calling him to love and to do what is good and to avoid evil, sounds in his heart at the right moment....For man has in his heart a law inscribed by God...His conscience is man's most secret core and his sanctuary. There he is alone with God whose voice echoes in his depths. Next up: The Virtues.

* Since the emergency with kitteh, I've not written a word, and frankly, I've been too preoccupied with, and stressed by, all that business to really notice the hole it's left in my life. The only other time this happened was when Jeanne almost died in the car crash last November. Well. I'm starting to notice the absence. After the vet appointment tomorrow, I think the pain of it is going come flooding in and smash me in the face like a 2-by-4 (especially if she confirms that kitteh is going to be okay with her meds). After Jim leaves next Wednesday (he comes home tomorrow, yay!), I foresee twelve-hour writing orgies.

* Watched Star Wars Ep IV (THE best one) with accompanying Rifftrax last night. God bless the MST guys, I haven't laughed that hard in weeks. I roared, actually. It's some of their finest work, bar none. How I adore smart asses.

* Regarding Jeanne, nothing has changed. She can't/doesn't speak, stand, or take care of herself in any way. She communicates by responding to yes/no questions with her thumb or eyelids (though she doesn't always respond). Occasionally she'll feed herself a spoonful of yogurt if one of her aides puts the spoon in her hand. She lives in a ranch home that is set up as a therapy center. It's an amazing placed staffed by physical therapists, nutritionists, nurses, and occupational therapists. They're wonderful people. There truly is a homey atmosphere in the house. She has her own room that we decorated ourselves.

I hate to say it, but without another miracle, I think she's come about as far as she's going to. I'm sure there will be advancements along the way, but baby steps. It's just a tragedy.

* Dreamt about PJP last night. This is becoming a weekly-ish thing. I'll tell you what, if he wished vengeance on me after I chose Jim, he got it. Eighteen years since we met, fifteen since we last saw each other, and he still haunts me.

Well, Buzz Lighthair of Ron Smiths Command's adventure in skydiving ended almost before it began. Turns out a perforated eardrum obtained during a brawl in a parking lot has left him succeptable to changes in atmospheric pressure, so on his second time down he blacked out and started bleeding from his nose and ears.

I shouldn't laugh, because obviously blood coming out of your ears = serious, but I can't help it. This is pretty much exactly what Brother Jonathan predicted would happen if Ben went up too high - of course, the way he phrased it was more along the lines of "I bet his massive head explodes" and came between my betting he wouldn't get to jump because his giant head wouldn't fit through the doors of the plane and Wilhelm suggesting that he employ a second parachute to support hisoversized cranium.

Anyway, apart from that, today was another day of train-related "joy" - and I use sarcastic quote marks - involving a six mile an hour ride in a dining car from Grossmont to Pickering while being forced to eat some truly undelicious food. Seriously, I would swallow my own head right about now, I am so hungry.

Blood Work? I Guess the Results Were Bad...

My doctor's assistant phoned to say the doctor wanted me to come in to discuss the results of my blood work.

Originally they told me I'd get the results by mail. )

The funny thing?

Except for this stupid infection (whatever), I don't feel bad at all. I've been active and stronger recently than in YEARS. So I don't know what to think.

But I guess it's always better to know what's happening than NOT to know, so that's a good thing. If there's something wrong that I can work on, then I need to get busy trying to fix it. I can always get more exercise, eat even more healthy foods and lose more weight, for one thing. So I guess we'll see!

Laptop!

I'm pretty excited, having just ordered my new laptop from Buy.Com!

I decided to get the IBM Lenovo Thinkpad T42. It's 'Factory Refurbished,' which basically means I save huge -- 52% on the cost! (For the record, a refurbished product can be anything from an unopened item the customer had second thoughts about to an item that that was missing an accessory, was sent back to the manufacturer where they replaced the missing part, tested and repackaged it. Refurbished goods are substantially lower-priced than their 'new' counterparts -- and often are of the same quality with a similar warranty.)

The thing about laptops is not to spend too much. They generally have a short life span, whether we're talking battery life or other issues. If your laptop is still going strong at three years, that's pretty amazing. Most will go for two to two and a half years, max.

I checked several reviews on this model and it was rated 'very good' more than once. It's never going to be my primary computer (I've got my desktop for that, after all -- plus my desktop at work), but I love the idea of being able to pack it around with me. Or to be able to use it downstairs in the family room. (I used to have a desktop down there and really loved it.) It could be handy for work, as well. I can see so many things I can do with it. Anyway, if I'd realized I could get one for $355.99, I'd have done it AGES ago! (Donn was the one who suggested Buy.Com, which seems like a great way to go. I told him I wanted to stay 'under $400,' and he said that was totally do-able.)

IBM Lenovo Thinkpad T42

IBM Lenovo Thinkpad T42

IBM Lenovo Thinkpad T42

IBM Lenovo Thinkpad T42

I like the look quite a bit, though I imagine some people would find it very plain. It weighs around 5 1/2 pounds and has a 15 inch monitor. Anyway, I'm excited as can be about it!

And even though this purchase is under $400, it's a big one for me. At one point I said to Marilyn [info]mistressmarilyn that it was a luxury item I didn't really need, but she pointed out that I'll use it a lot for work, which is quite true. Anyway, I added to the shipping to speed it up ($26.99), as the cost was so good, so I guess I could have it by next Tuesday! (Very cool, huh?)

I'm really happy that I was able to get Windows XP rather than Vista (which I pretty much hate). That was a big bonus to me.

Another bonus? I've wanted a personal DVD player for years. I can use this laptop to play DVDs, so that's pretty cool. (And all the DVD players I looked at cost around $200, so think of it -- I'm getting that feature as part of my $355.99 cost!)

I'll review the laptop when I actually have it and have used it -- in case anyone else is thinking of buying it. (Jeff actually mentioned on Tuesday that he might get one for himself, which I think would be great.)

Apparently, 5/10 of the best video nominees are mine, with additional vids up for specific categories (wtf?). All things considered, I doubt I'll get anything since if anyone does bother to vote for me, I'm guessing they'll all vote for different vids lol. But if you're interested, please do click the image below and cast your votes. There are some great works in the running by a lot of other people, so check them out too.

I wish I could find an author that I enjoy as much as I do Stephen King. At one point I was into Clive Barker and read everything that he had put out, but with the lack of "The Art" books I found myself wondering somewhere else. Ann Rice isn't much my style, and then I kinda come up blank for other GOOD horror novels.

I'm not a huge fan of Monster Horror, while I will read it every so often its not something I seek out. I like evilhorror.

Anyone out there with some suggestions for me?
