Remember Marvel Superheroes?
The Marvel Superheroes System, FASERIP (Fighting, Agility, Strength, Endurance, Reason, Intuition, Psyche) was a system of pure genius and, if we're very nice and pledge a few bucks Phil Reed will create an open gaming license version of the system, available for free.

How phat is that?

You can pledge HERE

Does this Phil Reed actually have the rights to the old MSH RPG? WotC owns the old TSR intellectual property, after all, so did he get their permission to use the FASERIP system?

That depends on circumstances, but technically speaking you can't copyright a system anyway. I'm pretty damn sure this is sound.

You can copyright a system. As someone who has licensed the use of a system, I can assure you under no uncertain terms that if you publish something using someone's system without license or permission, you can be sued for it based on copyright infringement.

However it appears that he will create a NEW system that is similar enough but not exact. Furthermore, the MSH RPG had other trademarks (Marvel characters) that he doesn't own.

None of the Marvel trademarks or copyrights will be used. If you look at the www.fundable.org page for the project you'll note that it doesn't mention Marvel anywhere on the page.

And this will not be a copy of the old game. It will be a compatible game. I've put a lot of thought into how to create a new system and toolkit that's compatible with the old game.

This is what I was saying. When Mayfair lost the license for the DC Heroes game, they still owned the copyright to the game system. They sold this system to Pulsar Games who then made Blood of Heroes. Same game, lousy book. They just put their characters in place of the DC ones. Much like you will have to do with MSH.

I have been trying to get a hold of the NEW owners of Pulsar Games who announced on their site 4 years ago that they would have news very soon. But they are doing nothing with the MEGS system. Shame really.

Glad to see someone is doing something with this system. I know a lot of people who played this system to this day with ratty old versions of the books. If yours is compatible, I am sure they will be excited to see it.

No I do not. There's a thread at RPG.net discussing ways in which a system like this can be legally created.

This will not be an exact copy of the old game. This will be a new game that is compatible with the old game.

No problem. That thread at RPG.net has grown pretty massive so it's difficult to keep up on exactly what's going on.

In that case, glad to hear it. I have a lot of fond memories playing MSH back in high school and would love to see the system come back.

*Especially* if it's not tied to just a superhero genre... sci-fi FASERIP would be fun, no?

Or we could just save our money and use the old rules, if we were so inclined to.

Absolutely. I've tried to make it clear that this is not intended as a replacement for the old game. The plan is to create a set of rules and a toolkit that people can use to create compatible material.

There is no need for this to play the game. With the old rules you can continue to play for the rest of your life.

From the way the OP introduced it, it did sound like it was meant as a replacement, so I sit corrected. :)

I salute your acknowledgment that the old rules are still viable; there seems to be a very pervasive thought in this community that if the rules aren't supported, they can't be used... which I find terribly baffling.

(Also, me and grimmy tend to get along best when we torment each other at every chance, thus his good-natured response to my comment.)

That still is one of my absolutely fav systems I indeed have all the original books and the PDF's, I really like powers and magic system also.

If my math skills were better I'd attempt a d20 conversion.

The magic supplement was my favorite among all the ones TSR released.

FUDGE is also a system with a similar sort of FEAT idea, but I definitely loved the MSH game, great, and easy for drop of the hat gaming and hijinks.

The $1,000 goal has been met. I've already posted some material in the Ronin Arts forums.
