Hi, Sean and Laura, I'm a listener of your podcast, and I'd like to say that you guys are freaking HILARIOUS. Especially when almost every tangent comes back to Liza Minelli.

I have a suggestion for a fantasy cast: the Kingdom Hearts video game series. If you do use this for a fantasy cast, try only using original characters from the game, and not any of the Final Fantasy or Disney cameos. Can't wait for the next episode!

I don't know if you guys watch The Office, but I was bored, so I decided to make a fantasy cast. This is for the US version, not the UK version. By the way, I'm Miranda from NY. I love your show!

A lot of these are pretty obvious (Jim and Pam as Brad and Janet, Michael as Frank, Angela and Dwight as Riff Raff and Magenta, etc.) but if anyone has any comments let me know.

i thought i'd mention that the hancock fabrics on pleasant hill road in gwinnett (off i-85) is going out of business and everything is 30-60% off and an additional 10% if you buy a whole bolt/roll/spool/etc.  there was TONS of great stuff and loads of stuff that could be handy for various rhps costumes.

Okay, guys and gals...here's my 80's singers cast (I couldn't do the hair bands, but I stayed in the decade)

Crim - Annie Lennox (Wearing her suit from the "Sweet Dreams Are Made of This" video)
Brad - Elvis Costello (He has snazzy glasses)
Janet - Madonna (She's both a "Virgin" AND a "Slut"!)
Riff - Mike Score (lead singer Flock of Seagulls) - That funky hairdo would look really cool when he's space Riff.
Magenta - Siouxsie Sioux - She's already got the make-up done
Columbia - Cyndi Lauper - She was certainly bubbly enough and her voice is kind of squeaky
Rocky - Simon LeBon - Couldn't really think of anyone else that looked that part back then and didn't want to choose David Bowie. Besides the girls LOVED him!
Eddie - John Cougar Mellencamp - He's not really fat and while Meatloaf would have still been appropriate, I'd just like to hear his version of "Hot Patootie"
Dr. Scott - Thomas Dolby - Dr. Scott IS a scientist after all
Frank - Boy George - The ultimate 80's Transvestite...kind of a gimme.

Just a small update for those of you who actually subscribe to this community (and yay for you guys!) Laura and I just returned from Podcamp Atlanta over the weekend. Among the cool stuff there was to do, we had the chnce to sit down with Les from The Signal and do a Firefly fantasy cast (Les's podcast is Firefly dedicated, of course) So we will be playing that this week.

There will also be some updated news about Rockypalooza, woot!

I'm trying to orgnize a RHPS showing
and I'm having trouble figuring out how you get the rights to show the movie
I have a theater
I have a cast
I have costumes
I have plenty of experince promoting concerts so geting an audiance should not be a problem
but with making shure the showing is leagle I'm compleatly lost
If someone could please comment with a link, a phone number, an email address or just a breif explanation on how to make shure I'm not breaking any laws with this showing
you would be a saint

Here's what I think is the problem with finding the "next Rocky Horror"...

..."Rocky" happened on it's own. It died at the box office and some little arthouse theatres were showing it (heck, don't have to cover the history...you all know how Rocky the phenomenon started by reading/listening to Uncle Sal, I'm sure). But, the point is...it just happened. It wasn't forced. It wasn't MADE to be a cult movie.

When people started going and yelling AP lines it built up and snowballed (basically with a whole..."hey, wouldn't it be cool if...____?" and the blank may have started with getting up and doing the Time Warp, then maybe coming to the theatre in costume and eventually with full casts performing the show (and SO many more AP lines...which do evolve and change over time as pop culture changes).

I think that the closest thing to this phenomenon in recent years may be a bit off of OUR radars, because we're not 'tweens, but I'd bet that it would be "High School Musical". They played it on Disney Channel. Smartly, they played the crap out of it for a couple of weeks to allow kids to see it and tell their friends about it (and the friends would have the opportunity to catch it). After the word of mouth spread (which is really the way that Rocky grew), they started showing it with sing-along lyrics on the screen (which is also the tactic that is making those interactive Sound of Music productions so successful). The kids started learning the songs...

...then, they released the first of the CDs, and it took many a retail store by surprise (I know, 'cause I worked at FYE at the time at the beginning of the swell of popularity...). Parents were coming in droves to get this thing for their kids. THEN the DVD came out and the disc included featurettes on how to do the dances. THEN they came out with a special edition of the CD with a karaoke sing-along portion (which actually worked in karaoke CD+G machines)...the kids could watch the movie, do the dances and sing the songs just like their favorite characters (sound familiar?). THEN they came out with ANOTHER DVD...this time with more featurettes.

I've heard that it's being prepared as a stage musical for actual teens to be able to perform in their high school/community theatre shows. They also do a "High School Musical" themed show at the Disney parks (now at MGM), again teaching the songs and dance numbers to the kids in the parks.

I'd say that if any PREMANUFACTURED cult movie was a success as a cult movie (without invoking the name of Rocky Horror) purely based on the hype from the studios, which the audience fell for wholeheartedly, this is it (even though, and maybe because, the target audience is much younger than what is usually thought of as the target audience for cult films). The trick is to see if it continues to steamroll or whether they kill their momentum AND the cult with the inevitable sequels (I've heard of at least two...one of which will be released theatrically).

I think that when you look at other movies that might be modern day cult movies (be that Priscilla, Clue, Hedwig, Showgirls, etc.), they all certainly have their followings, many just as loyal as that of Rocky's...just maybe not as vocal (or as large). I know that one of my other favorites is Phantom of the Paradise and BOY, does THAT have a cult following...
(but again, much smaller and I don't know of any live performances of that movie (and there really isn't much room for AP lines)!


Also, take this into account: Rocky has been around now for 32 years (or nearly). My mother went to Rocky years ago. Laura, isn't your daughter in your cast? It's MULTI-GENERATIONAL!!! It's kind of like a rite of passage these days. We expect kids in high school/college to have experienced it in a theatre at least once. Many of our kids (the outcasts/nerds/goths, etc.) may even become regulars and cast members because it's a place for them to feel normal (it's the true gay/straight student alliance).

- Once taking orders, he is now for himself, and has the powers to manipulate people's minds.

- You'll need the dual personality to go from prude to slut.

Brad Majors...Nathan Petrelli
- Because when he takes off his glasses, he really is Superman.

Riff Raff...Matt Parkmen
- Using his powers to know what the others are thinking. Although, this would be difficult to do on the Haitian.

Magenta...Hana Gitelman
- She doesn't say much in the movie, since she's able to communicate through electronic signals.

Columbia...Simone Deveaux
- No powers (as of yet), and caught in a two-way love affair.

Dr. Everett V. Scott...Mr. Bennet
- The one guy who knows everything, but pretends he doesn't.

Rocky Horror...Hiro Nakamura
- Since the movie is named after this character, we'll use the guy who the show is named after as well.

Eddie...Peter Petrelli
- One of Simone's love interest, that will (presumably) die at the end.

The Criminologist...Isaac Mendez
- Since he can foretell all the actions that take place.

I don't really watch the Simpsons, so I wouldn't have a fantasy cast...

...but, I will say that I found that "Dryel" bags were great for washing Columbia costumes covered in sequins, etc.
