[info]rockabilly_girl: Psychobilly release!

Vince Ray & The Boneshakers 'Zombie Radio' CD

The mighty talent of Vince Ray and his band has once again exploded onto CD via their latest album 'Zombie Radio'. As you may know Vince Ray has two ongoing musical projects, under his own name with the Boneshakers and more Punky Garage-Billy band The Vincent Razorbacks. This album is more on the ghoulish Rockabilly/Psychobilly side of things, so just a little bit closer to my soft girly taste.

As you might expect from the name of the album, it's all about zombies, skeletons, other bewitched creatures, cars and women.

The album kicks off with hard-hitting drums and fierce guitar licks in 'Betty Bitch'. The music here goes as hard as rockabilly can go. Vince, who provides guitar as well as singing, keeps the sound clear and clean - so when he does add fuzz, it works well emphasizing a more Psychobilly sound on songs such as track 2 'Let's Go Psycho'. 'Zombie Radio' is a furious Psycho/Rockabilly track on which the drums and double bass clicks create a rhythmic storm which suck in all your emotions. As well as the self-penned songs, "Zombie Radio" includes well performed covers of The Cramps's 'What's Inside A Girl', Generation X's 'King Rocker' and others. The cute rap which Vince performs on 'King Rocker' has to be mentioned in the review - excellent!

'Zombie Radio' as a whole album manages to stay on the edge of psychobilly and rockabilly styles, but is not limited to them. The musicians are too good and versitile to stay within any boundaries. The album is not for purist rockabillies, but for fans of The Cramps and similar voodoo rockers. The Boneshakes capture something unusual, clever, witty and dark, with it's own wild style.

The CD is presented stylish digipack with large double sided colour poster with Vince Ray's personal drawing for each song.

I mean the man can draw, the man can play guitar, the man can sing, Vince is a true present day Rock'n'Roll legend!

Lisa George & The Pedalos 'The Devil Said Shake' CD

Lisa George has been into 1940s and 50s music for a good while now and some of us know her from Rockin' Rhythm & Blues big band 'The Cat Pack' as well as all girl band 'Helles Bells'. Now the mighty talent of this lady takes her back to performing Rockabilly music once again. Backed up by exceptional musicians 'Lisa George & The Pedalos' is a sensational 5 piece rockabilly outfit and their first album 'The Devil Said Shake' is the proof!

Lucky 13 firey tracks display Lisa's big vocal talents. The album starts with a mellow, sensual version of Johnny Burnette's classic "Touch Me". From the first notes the melody, Lisa's voice transfers you into some wild Mexican desert. A devilish, almost hypnotic drumbeat captivate your emotions, and you want to listen to this album in full.

The second song continues the feel with Lisa's take on Lavern Baker's 'Voodoo Voodoo'. This uptempo stroller allows Lisa to demonstrate her strong, powerful and melodic voice. I don't know if Lisa's roots lie in a love of Rockabilly or more in the Swing and Rhythm & Blues, but the album has a diverse selection of songs with variations on all these styles. The Pedalos add their own feel to each song and show originality in self-penned originals.

The third track of the album 'Holy Joe' is a sneak peak on Lisa's love of Rhythm & Blues. The song is a mix of rockin' guitar and swing motives, the combination which continues throughout on this album. The Pedalos don't stop on one perticular style of music, they mix and match 1940s and 50s styles, occasionally venturing into more modern Rockabilly, as with their scene hit "Blue Eyed Rockabilly Boy".

One of my favourites on this album is 'Market Place', another powerful stroller. Lisa puts in a spellbinding performance convinces me that I have become a real fan of this band.

'Cried in Knots' is written by Mick Cocksedge (known via his own band The Cordwood Draggers). It's a Country tune with typical heartbreaking lyrics perfectly carried through the emotions in Lisa's voice.

'The Devil Said Shake' is a result of supreme music from a combination of one of the best female voices I have ever heard and top rockin' band recorded in one of the best vintage-style recording studios in the UK, Riverside Studios.

This is one of the best albums I have ever listened to, boasting amazing music, vocals and lyrics. Check this album out, you will not be disappointed.

Songs to check out: Blue Eyed Rockabilly Boy, Market Place, Didn't It Rain, The Devil Said Shake, Touch Me and the rest...

Hank's Jalopy Demons   'Going Straight...to The Electric Chair' CD

Top rockabilly with red hot tunes from this Australian band. Memorable guitar licks with a powerful punch, superb vocals and rockin' bop played with a great knowledge.
The CD starts with straight forward rockabilly tracks 'Way Out' and 'Shake-a-Bop'. Then the album takes a different turn with some impressive hillbilly bops. The album also contains some solidly performed strolls like 'She's The One That's Got It' and 'She's Well Stacked'.
In addition to rhythm guitar, upright bass, guitar, and drums, the tracks the guys also add a revving sax to 'Ask Me How'. The majority of songs were written by the band with exception of "She's The One That's Got It" and "Love Come Back To Me". The album was recorded at the Preston studio, Melbourne.
This album will be loved by anybody who admires rockabilly and hillbilly bop. Top stuff from these Australian Cats.

Cathouse Thumpers 'The Cathouse Thumpers' CD

An outstanding album by a trio of super red hot rockabilly cats from San Diego, California.
Hi-Octane Rockabilly with thumping bass and mind blowing guitar licks.  These 13 top notch tracks will please fans of Stray Cats, Brian Setzer
solo, and the rockabilly side of Rev. Horton Heat.  Featuring hi-powered Neo-Rockabilly in the shape of 'Our Neck Of The Woods', 'Chicken Legs', uptempo blasters like 'Just for Kicks' and 'Little Green Men',  and bluesy tunes too.   'Spellcaster' would be at home on the soundtrack of a future Taratino movie.
The Energy from this album could power a small town!  The Cathouse Thumpers are a big deal.  There's no doubt that with have something
special here.  In the hands of this trio, Rockabilly music is alive and kicking!

Finn & The Sharks 'Breakfast Special' CD

The fourth album from this fantastic American band.  18 of the 19 cuts presented here are  previously unreleased original recordings from the early 1980s, the time when the world saw a second rockabilly upsurge.  The spirit of the 80s runs throughout, but the music is played how only an American band can - with it's roots deep into Rock 'n' Roll & Blues ground.  All of the songs were recorded live in a studio and the energy is bursts forth from the speakers.

What makes this band outstanding is that Finn and The Sharks have produced (and are still producing) outstanding music for over 20 years.  The quality of the performance and of their original material is always of the highest standard - and they never drops the standards from the highest level.

As always with Finn & The Sharks, there is no filler here.  They keep things purely rockin' in a way that will appeal to fans of early 80s revival Rockabilly and American Roots music, yet they are one of only a handful of bands that could have had enough mass appeal to break through to the mainstream.
Buy this album and hear what you missed!  This is one of the great unknown (outside of their locality) bands of the 80s Rockabilly  movement - and they are still rockin' today.

Various Artists 'Cat'n Around Volume 4' CD

The fourth volume of the finest collections of modern rockabilly music is out now.  As always, "Cat'n Around" gethers together the hottest acts from all over the worlds and these 21 tracks are the proof.  The compilation starts with Mouse Zinn's 'Don't Tell Me', which ticks all the boxes to be a perfect rockabilly song, but I think it lacks a little all-important energy.  So the beginning of the compilation could maybe have been a little stronger, but from the on it exceedes all expectations.
Kick 'Em Jenny, who has just released her first CD, gets the second spot on the CD.  The unusual raucous vocals and outregous energy of this rockabilly girl will blow your mind.  You will be dancing, not foot tapping.  The Death Dealers, a surf band from Japan, follows Jenny's track. Top class surf rocker with a magnificent sound, followed by Smokestack Lightnin' with their surfy version of the Wanda Jackson
classic 'Funnel Of Love'.   I really like the melody and how this brilliant band plays it, but I am not that keen on the vocal.  The compilation features a couple of songs from Detox When Dead featuring Sascha (Boss Hoss, ex Hot Boogie Chillun).  There is very little connection to rockabilly, and if you don't like hard rock music you can skip tracks 5, 11 and 19 safely.  'Do what I want, When I want' by Mouse Zinn and The Phantoms is the next selection - a scintillating track, perfect in all aspects.  Warren Scott's 'The Itch' is a good song, but could have been recorded better.  Their second track shows of his talent much better.  Carlos and The Bandidos bring and Elvis feel to the album, very good if not memorable.
Then you have another opportunity to hear the excellent version of 'Personal Jesus' by Saints and Sinners.  It is always pleasure to hear
this interpretation.  The Rockin' 8-Balls is another band who have just released a new CD (their second album).  Their great version of the classic 'Freight Train Boogie' is a from their previous long-player.  Energetic stuff!
Later we get to hear more great songs from Mouse Zinn, Kick 'Em Jenny, Warren Scott, The Death Dealers.  I would also like to mention that 'Cat'n Around #4' features another great modern day rockin' classic - "Time" by The Blue Flames is always a dance floor filler!

This compilation is the most diverse in the series so far.  It is so perfectly compiled that all the style blend into each other with amazing
accuracy.   5 stars from me, pleasure to listen to.

'The Clothes The Cars & The Music' DVD

A DVD which celebrates Rockabilly and the retro rockin' culture, filmed by Mic Dixon during the last years 10th Rockabilly Rave and Hotrod/Classic car convention called The Hotrod Hayride in England.   There are many performances from top Rockabilly artists, together with interviews of regular guys and gals who follow the scene, share their opinions and thoughts on lack of understanding from modern society on their love of rockabilly music and vintage fashion.  They tell their stories of how they started to dig the music and the circumstances that led to the way they feel, look and live now.
The film is jam-packed with music, with live performances from Big Sandy, The Go-Getters, Ruby Ann, Dave & Deke Combo, Buzz Wayne, Janis Martin with the Ragtime Wranglers, High Noon, Charlie Thompson, Miss Mary Ann and The Mad Men, which were all filmed at Rockabilly Rave 2006.
I like the way the film focuses on the people who love this music, who gather together at concerts and festivals to enjoy themselves to the
full.  It's all about passion driven people with love of the music.

DiMaggio Bros. 'When I Hit My Stride' CD

This album is just bursting with sweet sound of American music, hot string picking & revved up guitar playing - I can listen to Marco's playing all day long.
Several styles get packed in this album, including Johnny Cash and Elvis sounds, which all have one thing in common - a melody.  Maybe some tracks are not all that memorable, but they are all enjoyable andl you can certainly dance along to them.  The songs are mostly self-penned, but there are uptempo remakes of 'Born To Be Alive', 'I Got Stung' and others.
It's pleasure to listen to this album recorded by fantastic musicians and vocalists.

The Flatfoot Shakers  'Many Sides of The...' CD

Traditional rockabilly band from Australia, who in their 10 year existence gained a big following over the world and played at pretty much every big rockabilly event in Europe and America.  So this album is sort of "best of", tracks taked from their previous albums and compilations, 'Chick Boom' (1999), 'Shakin' Tonight'(2000), 'High Heeled Lovin' Machine' (2003).  All these recordings came from topstudios like Tail in Sweden and Preston in Melbourne, Australia.  As the songs come from different periods, we can witness the musical transition the band was went through.  In the first few tracks there is a stripped down rockabilly sound, but later the tracks there are a little more sophisticated with additional instrumentation such as piano, resulting in a bigger sound.
The Flatfoot Shakes play rockabilly music of the highest standard, so if you didn't catch them before, this album is a good opportunity to do so.

Hillbilly Casino 'Sucker Punched' CD

If you are into high energy American music, Reverend Horton Heat and Brian Setzer style, then this album will stay in your CD player for a really long time!  It's fast 'n' mean rockabilly with great vocals from Nic Roulette (ex Blue Moon Boys) and lyrics written with a pinch of salt.  Recorded in Tennessee, mastered in Nashville, featuring ex-members of BR5-49, Tobasco Kat, and Setzer's Nashvillians.
When driving and listening to this album at the same time - don't be surprised to find yourself speeding.  Your car will love it too ;)

Jack Rabbit Slim 'Sleaze-a-Billy' CD

Second album of Wild Wild Rockabilly from Jack Rabbit Slim.  The first album was and
is still selling like hot cakes, now the same story is being repeated by their latest
release.  In this album the band include a variety of styles, but sometimes is seams that
the cats are trying to please everybody.  Johnny Cash's Chica-Boom sound song,
a Paul Burlison's guitar sound song...
The album contans 12 songs, 11 of which are the band's own and one a cover.
The CD also has a video track 'Gypsy Curse'.

Mystery Gang 'Jungle Fever' CD

The third album of the Hungarian rockabilly band with 10 songs which are all
self penned, and often have a sleazy bluesy feel to them.  Something you could hear in smokey bar,
wth people deancing weird dances without any fear of embarrassing themselves.  Modern recording,
powerful revved-up lead guitar and special effects on vocals which brings extra energy to the songs.
There's a primitive beat and it's not bad thing in this case.  Music for greasy rockers.  Gangabilly Boogie!

Johnny Law & The Pistol Packin' Daddies 'Crazy Love' CD

Rockabilly four piece band from Australia.  The album starts with dancing number 'Be Boppin'Baby',
perfect for any boppers.  After such a great start Johnny slows the pace a little and presents us
with some good guitar picking and soulful songs about...love:)
Out of 12 songs on the album, 8 are written by Johnny Law.  Stand-out songs for me are 'Be Boppin'
Baby' and 'Big Bad Blues' on which the guitar playing of Felix Potier is a highlight. (Felix also
sings one song on the album, Joe Clay's 'Goodbye Goodbye').  This is a very good Rockabilly, boppin'
hillbilly and blues album and I'm already looking forward to forthcoming "I'll Get It Right" CD!

Nycotina 'Alrededor del Mundo' CD

A young Mexican rockabilly band who deliver their music with a lots of energy and wild rhythms.
Nycotinas mix rockabilly with psychobilly and neo-rockabilly, all featuring stand-out lead guitar
and punchy rhythm guitar, played by Wadalupe, the only girl in an otherwise all male group.
Still she gets to sing a few songs.  I think her vocals are the strongest on the album.
A few songs may not be so well sung, but the music is well played and this band is still very
young and has a lot of potential!
The guys are going to the States in the begining of May for 'Cinco de Mayo Fiesta' in Hollywood,
where they will be playing alongside Calavera, Pep Torres and many others.
Nycotina is great to watch live - I was lucky enough to catch them in Spain earlier this year.

Finn & The Sharks 'Built To Last' CD

New York band which plays Roots Rock, Rockabilly, Rock 'n' Toll - truly  American Music!  This album was reccomended to me by a friend, and ever since it has  my favourite album, fixed in my CD player good a few weeks.  16 self penned  top-notch songs.  The album covers many styles and being the brilliant musicians that  Finn & The Sharks are, the guys play each style to perfection.  Each song is a different story  and has a different mood, but blend together on the CD perfectly.  This stand-out album is a must-have for lovers of American Rockin' Roots music, and particulaly for fans of The Blasters or Chris Isaak.

Bingo 'Back to the Future' CD

12 songs of Red Hot Rockabilly, Jive and Setzer style guitar licks!  All the lirycs are in Russian language, but a few melodies you may recognize from popular songs like  'All I Can Do Is Cry' and 'Americano'... They cover the song 'Wild Cat' by legendary Russian Rockabillies 'Mister Twister', and have done a good job with it.
This Moscow based band was formed only a year ago, but the members are not new  to music scene over there.  Already a video on 'Queen Of The Swing' is being played on major Russian music channels, and the song was picked my many radio DJ.  But for Russian mainstream audience there is a slight problem, as a few DJs have described it as "Too Rockabilly" -  but that's not a problem for me :)

Jack Face & The Volcanos 'Born To Ramble' CD

The second album of these French hepcats was starts with 'Rock 'n' Roll Twist' which was originally recorded by JR White the Starbrites.  The songs sets the standard and style of the album very well.  Stripped down, layed back, traditional style uptempo country/rustic rockabilly style tunes with some blues blended in.  Jack's voice and guitar playing are perfect for each other, creating a soulful duet.
A strong album featuring four songs especally writen for them by Don Cavalli.
My faves: "You'll Never Worry My Mind", "Deep River", "You Tore Your Playhouse Down.

Mister Twister 'Rockabilly, Form of Life!' CD

This CD re-issue of a truly classic USSR Rockabilly album by legendary 'Mister Twister'.
The original vinyl came out in 1989 on the major USSR label 'Melodiya' (Melody)  and you might have seen it in collectors shops, as somehow the release found it's way all over the world.   Personally I have seen the album in Paris and London and have friends who bought in Japan and Spain.
This recording is filled with wild energy and well produced rockin' tunes.  15 mainly original, although  you can hear how the guys rework classics like 'Shake Rattle & Roll' and 'Rock Therapy' in Russian language.
A piece of Soviet Rock 'n' Roll history!  This CD is a limited edition collectors item, so grab it if you're lucky enough to find it.

Texabilly Rockets 'Bop Potion No.5' CD

Put your dancing shoes on, the new 'Texabilly Rockets' album is here!
This latest release from the Portugese quartet is made up from 19 tracks,
mostly self penned, but also including such classics like 'All I Can Do Is Cry', 'Stack-A-Records' and Riverside Trio's 'Hold Me, Love Me, Squeeze Me' which they perform brilliantly. Mainly the album consists of great bop tunes, which is The Texabilly Rockets' speciality, and there's a touch of Hillbilly Boogie in here too.

Stripped down Raw Rockabilly & Hillbilly Bop trio with their debut release. Mostly new self-penned songs, except for a Johnny Cash cover rounding off the set.

Blue Rockin' 'Rockin' Boogie Trash' CD

It's the second album of this rockin' trio from Germany, with 14 songs in which they try to mix garage sound with rockabilly and blues bop. Singer Joe has a raucous and powerful voice, which compliments the music his band plays.
The album won't change your world, and maybe some of the songs would sound better as part of a rockabilly compilation, rather than as a whole album.
The best song: Hypnotic.

He's adored my many rockabilly fans for his wild concert appearances and even wilder music.   This album is the third release from him, but the first under his full name.

[info]rockabilly_girl: The Crawdads 'Released'!

This brilliant British rockabilly band is back with an awesome new
album. It was recorded on authentic 50s equipment with a sound oh
so sweet and real - the proper sound guys! Their music and
well-penned songs will blow your mind and will change your opinion on
modern bands who play 50s style rockabilly at the moment. You will play this album
play again and again, it really rocks!!!
The Crawdads have been going for years, released an album in the 90s which
sold thousands, but then the members decided to do their own thing. For many years
their fans have been asking them to record a new album, and here it comes!

This album is unbelivable, it's so raw! It doesn't sound like a typical
rockabilly band. The Crawdads are diffirent, pure heaven for the ears!!!!
Must have album of the year!
