Well, I finally got it done. The July/August updates to California Highways are in and uploaded.

Yet another two month update. My weekends are getting busier and busier.

2.1a. Program Amendments/Project Approvals – STIP Amendments for Action

(4/June) The San Bernardino Associated Governments proposes to amend TCRP Project #58 - Route 10; widen freeway to eight-lanes through Redlands, Route 30 to Ford Street in San Bernardino County to re-distribute $277,000 in TCRP funds from PS&E to Construction and update the project schedule and funding plan. (Related items under Tab 78 (2.6e.(2)) and Tab 55 (2.6e(4)).) Approved.
2.1c. Traffic Congestion Relief (TCR)Program Application Approvals/Amendments

(1a/June) The Department proposes to amend the CMIA Project and Baseline Agreement for the Route 219 Expressway, Phase 2 project (PPNO 9940C) in Stanislaus County to delete $2,240,000 in RIP funds and add $2,240,000 in federal Demonstration funds. Approved.

(1b/June) The Department and the San Bernardino Associated Governments propose to amend the CMIA Project and Baseline Agreement for the Interstate 215 North – Segments 1 and 2 Project (PPNO 0247P) in San Bernardino County to modify funding plan to reflect cost increase. Approved. Project is placed on CMIA “watch” list until contract is awarded and with the understanding that SANBAG Board will adopt resolution stipulating that they will cover any cost increases in right of way and construction.

(1c/June) The Department and Kern County propose to amend the CMIA Project and Baseline Agreement for the Route 46 Expressway – Segment 3 Project (PPNO 3386A) in Kern County to modify funding plan to reflect cost increase. Approved.

(1d/June) 22 2.1c.(1d) The Department, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and the Sonoma County Transportation Authority propose to amend the CMIA Project and Baseline Agreement for the Route 101 – HOV Lane Railroad Avenue to Rohnert Park Expressway Project (PPNO 0775) in Sonoma County to modify the scope and amend the funding plan. Approved, as modified. Project benefits need to be updated.

(1e/June) The Department, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the Alameda County Congestion Management Agency, and the Contra Costa Transportation Authority propose to amend the CMIA Project and Baseline Agreement for the Route 24- Caldecott Tunnel Fourth Bore Project (PPNO 0247P 0057A) in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties to modify funding plan. Approved.

(1f/June) The Department and the San Bernardino Associated Governments propose to amend the CMIA Project and Baseline Agreement for the Interstate 215 North - Segment 5 Project (PPNO 0247N) in San Bernardino County to modify funding plan to reflect cost increase. Approved.

(2a/June) The Department and the Sacramento Area Council of Governments propose to amend the Route 99 Project and Baseline Agreement for the Feather River Bridge Replacement and Widening Project (PPNO 8361B) in Sutter County to increase cost for R/W and Construction. Approved.

(1a/July) The Department and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority propose to amend the CMIA Project and Baseline Agreement for the Route 5 HOV Widening, Route 134 to Route 170 project (PPNO 0142F) in Los Angeles County to amend the funding plan and expand the scope. Approved, as distributed at meeting on pink paper.

(1b/July) The Department and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority propose to amend the CMIA Project and Baseline Agreement for the Route 5 HOV Lane from Orange County Line to Route 605 project (PPNO 2808) in Los Angeles County to amend the funding plan. Approved, as distributed at meeting on pink paper.
2.2a. Environmental Matters – Notice of Preparation of an Environmental Impact Report (EIR)

(June) Route 101 in Santa Barbara County – Roadway improvements near Carpinteria (NOP). Commission had no comments on the alternatives. However, the Department and partners should identify the funding sources and the likelihood of securing the funds needed to complete the alternative selected.
2.2b. Environmental Matters – Comments on Documents in Circulation (Draft EIR)

(1) (June) Comments on Documents in Circulation: Route 154 in Santa Barbara County – Roadway improvements near Santa Ynez (Draft EIR). No comments on alternatives; however, alternative funding sources should be obtained for the project.
2.2c. Environmental Matters – Approval of Projects for Future Consideration of Funding, Route Adoption or New Public Road

(1/June) Route 405 in Los Angeles County programmed in the CMIA – Roadway improvements throughout Los Angeles County (FEIR). (Correct Book Item, page 1, paragraph 2, to correct start date of construction to FY 2008-09.) Alternative selected is consistent with CMIA scope. No comment on alternative. SOC accepted and resolution for future consideration of funding was approved.

(3/June) Approval of Project for Future Consideration of Funding and New Public Road Connection: Route 580 in Alameda County programmed in the CMIA – New Interchange at Isabel Avenue (MND). Deferred. Cost and scope of ED is not consistent with cost and scope of CMIA baseline agreement.

(4/June) Approval of Project for Consideration of Funding: Route 580 in Alameda County programmed in the CMIA – Roadway improvements in the city of Livermore (FND). Deferred. Cost and scope of ED is not consistent with cost and scope of CMIA baseline agreement.

(July) Route 12 in Napa and Solano Counties programmed in the CMIA – Roadway improvements near the city of Napa (MND). Approved.
2.3b. New Public Road Connection

(June) Route 580 at 4-Ala-580-PM 14.2 (Isabel Avenue) in the city of Livermore. Deferred.

Authorized by Chapter 507, Statutes of 2006, which amended Section 383 of the Streets and Highways Code. Approved.

(June) 8-SBd-210-PM 16.02/18.28 Route 210 in the city of Rialto, on West Easton Street, between the west city limit line and North Ayala Drive, consisting of relocated and reconstructed city streets and frontage roads. Approved.

(June) 10-SJ-120-PM 16.6/17.3 Route 120 in the city of Escalon, on McHenry Avenue, Escalon Bellota Road, and Yosemite Avenue, consisting of superseded highway and reconstructed and relocated city streets. Approved.

(June) 3-ED-50-PM 72.7 Route 50 in the county of El Dorado, between Elks Club Drive and Sawmill Road, consisting of state highway right of way, for the purpose of constructing a bike path. Approved.

California to Virginia

I want to start planning a roadtrip, it would be leaving south California (I'm in Palm Springs area/Coachella Valley). I am from Baltimore, visiting my grandmother in California for the summer, I am planning on moving to Norfolk, Virginia in September. I would definitely appreciate the experience of seeing the country by driving to Virginia. So it'd be you driving back by yourself, or maybe picking up a traveler in Virginia that wants to head to California (you never know!)

I do not have a vehicle, but a suspended license (that will hopefully be valid by September). We'd split everything 50/50, or however many people are coming. I have two luggages and one duffel bag. I'd like to really make this a great experience by stopping off in every state and trying to enjoy it someway. I'd love someone that shares my love of photography, and neat/kooky roadside attractions. I'd love to preplan the trip somewhat, with places (example: some hole in the wall coffee shop with great history and stories) to stop by and see on the way, or people to interact with (example: a online friend you've always wanted to meet)

A little about me, I am 26, female, born and raised in Florida, spent the last year living in Baltimore & loved it. I am very easy to get along with. I enjoy good literature, art, horror movies, and ALL kinds of music (mostly industrial, or underground hiphop) except country (but I'm sure I could deal with it).

If anyone is semi-interested or meet some of these requirements, please contact me. Or if anyone knows of ANY websites/databases that caters to People finding other People to roadtrip/travel with. I tried looking, and couldn't find any. There's got to be one, right?

Now June. June was busy with my daughter's plays and her 8^th grade graduation, combined with a lot of weekends lost to my other love: live theatre. So this month, again, combines two months worth of material.

Added a link to the Mojave Roads website. Added a map to part 4 of the Chronology (under 1958)

Added additional details on the "How do I get a sign referring to my (insert noun) on a state highway?" question in the FAQ, based on information from Don Howe at Caltrans. Updated the FAQ related to traffic volumes to point to the Caltrans Traffic Data Branch, which now has volumes from 2004 to 2007 (thanks to Timothy Edwards for the link).

AB 2906 (Tran) Vehicles: high-occupancy vehicle lane: buffer area.

SB 1419 (Yee) Highways: Safety Enhancement-Double Fine Zones.
Existing law requires that a state highway segment be designated as a Safety Enhancement-Double Fine Zone if, among other requirements, the segment is eligible for designation and the Director of Transportation, in consultation with the Commissioner of the California Highway Patrol, certifies that the segment of state highway meets specified criteria. Existing law requires the Department of Transportation to conduct a Safety Enhancement-Double Fine Zone study that relates to pedestrian safety and evaluates the appropriateness of adding to those criteria. This bill would, notwithstanding these requirements and until January 1, 2014, designate specified segments of State Highway Routes 1 and 101 in the City and County of San Francisco as Safety Enhancement-Double Fine Zones. The bill would require that the Safety Enhancement-Double Fine Zone study discussed above be conducted on these segments and include, among other things, a review of traffic volume, speed, and collisions, as specified. The bill would require the department to report its findings from this study to the appropriate committees of the Legislature on or before January 1, 2013.

Old California Shield in Commercial

As I was walking back to my office with my lunch, the TV in the cafeteria (which normally plays either CNN or Fox News) had on a commercial for Super 8 Motels. What caught my eye in this commercial was an Ohio road sign, followed by a current California road sign, followed by various license plates. Then, near the end, they showed a pre-1964 Calfornia white bear shield sign for Route 11. None of those are up anymore, so I'm wondering what prompted them to use this sign, and where they found it.

Has anyone else seen this commercial?

The April/May updates to California Highways (“Everything You Wanted To Know About Numbered Highways In California But Were Afraid To Ask”) are up.

Well, given that the March 2008 updates were done in early April, perhaps I should call them the April updates. But then again, who's kidding who? I've just been too busy with some of my other hobbies and life to get the updates done. Combine that with needing to do some painting during the weekends at home, and we're left with May updates in May.
