Tying not to lose to a fern...
Hey, what's up?

My name's Chris Nassar. I'm running for Student Government President. I'm a third year student majoring in electrical engineering, originally from Winslow, Maine.

Here are some of my ideas to take RIT from good to totally awesome. If you guys have any suggestions, I'm open to them.

*Make course sequences less rigid, so if you miss a class you don't have to wait a year to retake it.

*Greater frequency of SG events

*Weekly Local\Indy music shows

*More hangouts for students

*Bigger game room...More pool tables...More games.

*Paths for bikers/skate boarders

*More student housing

*Better on-line community/calendar

If you have any questions or suggestions...send them my way.

You can vote the 12th through the 15th on the SG website. http://www.sg.rit.edu

That was my first thought too ... I don't even know what SG can do, but I doubt its much at all.

SG doesn't directly have the power to do a lot of that stuff, but SG is the liaison between the students and the faculty. So hopefully I can let the administration know what the students want, whether it is what I outlined above or not.

What do you want to see from SG?

i'll be leaving in may so none of this will affect me, but here's my two cents anyway.

one, i still can't figure out if this was a parody or not. it seems legit, but making rit "totally awesome" seems like an odd way for a presidential candidate to get people to take him seriously.

two, nearly every one of your goals has to do with improving the social life, and only one has to do with the quality of the education. though the social life here does leave a little to be desired, i wouldn't be interested in spending my tuition dollars on a party school. so yeah, look to improve the social life, but try to come up with some other things too.

there's my two cents. count 'em.

I'm serious, but I try to have fun too. I've spent many hours just getting onto the ballot(50 signature from each college).

I don't have all the answers. I'm sure I don't even know all the problems either. That's one of the reason I posted on the RIT live journal community(besides trying to get votes). I'd like to know what you'd do to improve academics here? My running mate Tom had talked about finding a way for undergraduates to do more research.

Cool. I'm glad someone's caring enough to try and reach all the students, especially ones through a potentially hostile medium. And being so frank about it, to boot.

I'm actively involved with a few clubs on campus and so I ask of you: what will you do for the clubs on campus?

That's a very vague question. All clubs have different needs. I can't make any specific budget promises.

I'd like to see clubs have greater access to meeting rooms and fields times. I'd like to make it easier for clubs to advertise whether it be through more club days, WITR,the SG channel, or more photo copies.

Do you have any specific concerns?

Well, one of my main concerns is not what SG can do for me, but what it can do for itself. There are a lot of things that, given the proper attention, could be fixed within SG itself (in regards to interaction with clubs). The recent addition of the desk outside SG is a /big/ help, and I'm thinking along the lines of things like that.

I know SG's internal system for dealing with contact information is a bit braindead; it'd be nice to see that get fixed up so I don't have to constantly check in with SG to make sure things are set up properly.

Perhaps creating some sort of online system where clubs can maintain their own information, post events that get put on a main page, etc. Lots of little things here and there could help out SG and in turn help the clubs run more smoothly.

This is an awesome idea that I've suggested to SG a hundred times.

they did come up with something like that earlier in the year i think. i forgot what it was called but it was kinda like a forum for each club...it may have failed miserably. talk to ryan giglia about it. all clubs had to apply for it i think :)

If all the student government can do is suggest to the administration what students might think, why do we have a student government?
Student surveys every week would be much more effective, and accurate.

And why does student government get payed?

I think talking directly to the administration can work, especially if SG shows that they do have the backing of the student body. Campus wide polls can mask the needs of smaller groups on campus, SG can help to get their voice heard.

Also, SG directly controls the club budget.

"The President, Vice President, and Finance Secretary maybe compensated for a minimum of 6 hours and up to 20 hours of Student Government related service per week at the current stipend level set in conjunction with the Student Employment Office. These hours will be subject to verification by the Administrative Advisor signing off on the time cards. Any discrepancies will be referred to the Cabinet. A time card justification sheet must be submitted with the time card. The Administrative Advisor will have final approval to question the Senator and/or modify the time card if a discrepancy can not be resolved by the Cabinet."

I think that they get payed 6.87/hour, but don't quote me on it. It isn't like student government is getting rich.

I know talking directly to the administration can work, I've done it before. I was not however in Student Government at the time.

If the student government is simply a tool for improving social life on campus it seems awful redundant(CAB and all the clubs) and a severe waste of money.

The SG hasn't done anything since helping to get credit card vendors banned from campus(which was a GREAT thing). Although, that was something that was brought to them as something they should deal with. One member of the SG a few years back tried to get more blue-boxes(campus safety phones) and improve safety all over campus. It wasn't until after a student was killed walking back from class that changes actually happened.

It feels to me like it's a group that exists simply for its own existence.

That quote you have is from the by-laws. That's not how they get payed though.

They all get a flat stipend which comes to a total of over $40,000 a year for all of them.

I'd be interested to know if the student clubs could use that money. Why pay the people who control the budget HALF of the entire club budget. Why not put that $40K to good use in the clubs? They have more of a direct effect on students lives anyway.

Why does SG get payed? Are SG students getting a raise this year? Is the club budget really being cut? (things I've heard)

In response to some of your posted topics.....

*Make course sequences less rigid, so if you miss a class you don't have to wait a year to retake it. RIT is making you register for your entire year of classes at the same time next year. So this doesn't make any sense....good idea though.

*Greater frequency of SG events Can't wait.

*Weekly Local\Indy music shows Have them in the redbarn and let people drink.

*More hangouts for students How about more students for hanging out?

*Bigger game room...More pool tables...More games. ehhh

*Paths for bikers/skate boarders Why not...Sounds good.

*More student housing Is there a plan for this? Or are you simply going to say to the administration "we want more housing". Where does this fit in with the strategic plan that's being developed?

*Better on-line community/calendar Yeah, I agree.

What's your strategy? What's your experience? Do you have any more info for us all?

Have [Weekly Local\Indy music shows] in the redbarn and let people drink.

That'd be a riot, until the first drunken twit stumbles out the door and into traffic.

The let people drink is a fun little line I like to throw into any suggestions I have for campus. Students immediately perk up....

"Drinking?! Sounds awesome...where do I sign"

Concerts in the red barn could be cool though.

Anyway, I will abide by the student government constitution, and by doing so I won't be much of a dictator. I don't plan on opressing anybody either ;-)

Ok,
1) Why are we blaming this dude for the faults of SG as they stand now ? He didn't decide they should get paid. And frankly, if they're going to spend time doing, I have no qualms about paying them for it.

2) Props to you for coming on here and at least stating your platform. You had to know you were going to be flamebait

3) Yeah, it seems sorta heavy on the social interaction part of things, but then thats what we all bitch about. I for one would like a bigger game room, we used to have bowling on campus as part of the game room, but that got taken up by the music room down the hall from the game room.

4) My sense of humor was at least tickled. He and his running mate seem to want to inject a little spirit into the campaign, all the other posters have shit like 'communication' all over them.

SG could throw themselves off the Sentinel one at a time, and RIT would NEVER allow drinking on campus. Get over it. Everyone gets drunk as much as they want to anyway, so fuck RIT sponsoring it.

You might be right. If we could pay students to take part in clubs maybe there would be more social events on campus.

I 'do', but I don't get paid. Maybe I'm targeting the wrong thing. I should be asking RIT to pay me for doing things outside of class.
