A combative and tireless defensive midfielder, Italian international Gennaro Gattuso made his professional breakthrough in Scotland with Rangers FC.

Club
Gattuso was a cause célèbre in Italian football when he signed for Rangers on a Bosman free transfer after only ten appearances for AC Perugia. After 40 league games in Scotland he returned home to join newly promoted Salernitana Sport ahead of the 1998/99 campaign and his form with the southern club earned him a move to Italian champions AC Milan. Gattuso soon developed into a mainstay of the Milan midfield and in 2002/03 he played a key role in the club's double success when the Rossoneri were crowned European champions and Italian Cup winners. Gattuso missed just one league game the following term as Milan raced to the title and was part of the side that lost the UEFA Champions League final in 2005. The following season featured his usual contribution of hard work and fighting spirit although Gattuso also scored three goals in 35 Serie A games.

National team
Gattuso made his senior bow against Sweden in February 2000 and subsequently played at the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals, where he made two appearances. He was also a member of the victorious Italian team at the 2000 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He only started one game in UEFA EURO 2004™ but under Marcello Lippi he was a key figure at the heart of the midfielder in the Azzurri's World Cup success in Germany.

Italians have a word for a player like Andrea Pirlo: 'fantasista'. He may look languid, but his vision, passing and set-piece skills have drawn comparisons with the great Roberto Baggio.

Club
Pirlo made his name with his hometown club Brescia Calcio, helping them to promotion into Serie A and earning himself a move to FC Internazionale Milano. He failed to make an impact at the San Siro and after loan moves to Reggina Calcio and Brescia he joined AC Milan at the end of 2000/01. It was there that he came to the fore as Milan secured a double of UEFA Champions League and Coppa Italia in 2003 and was then outstanding in front of the defence as Milan stormed to the 2003/04 Serie A title. Has continued a high standard and despite missing a penalty in the 2005 UEFA Champions League final defeat against Liverpool FC, bounced back to play 33 Serie A games the following season at the heart of the Milan midfield.

National team
Pirlo's first career highlight came when Italy won the 2000 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, scoring twice in the final against the Czech Republic. Pirlo made his Azzurri debut against Azerbaijan in September 2002 and replaced the suspended Francesco Totti at UEFA EURO 2004™, starting against Sweden and Bulgaria. Under new coach Marcello Lippi, Pirlo became a key player and was instrumental for Italy as they won the 2006 FIFA World Cup, an ever-present who scored the first goal of his country's campaign in Germany.
