The Latest on Ric Flair/ROH/DragonGabe
The following press release was issued yesterday by Ric Flair's agent:
GILLESPIE TALENT BOOKING & PUBLICITY
F O R I M M E D I AT E R E L E A S E
June 24, 2009
We’ve had several inquiries since Ric Flair began to appear frequently on RAW again as to whether or not Ric is still available for appearances outside of WWE, so here’s a statement from The Man himself:
“I will always be a part of the WWE family, however I am still anxious to get out there and meet my fans in person. I have had a great time doing just that since my retirement! My agent is currently negotiating appearances across the US and several abroad that will allow me to meet my fans around the world. I am very excited about these new opportunities! WooooOOOooo!”

As you can tell from the above, what is not mentioned is Flair's status with Ring of Honor. Maybe Elain Gillespie didn't even think much of ROH to even mention them in her press release. Basically what has happened is that Flair wants to keep on good terms with the WWE and to stay on good terms with the WWE, Flair has removed himself from appearing on ROH Television.
As reported/broken earlier on the DOI, Flair was paid up front for all his dates, as he was paid very handsomely up front by ROH owner Cary Silken. It is stated in Flair's contract with ROH that he must stay until the end of the events he's booked on which has not been a problem until as of late.
On 6/12, in Virginia, Flair wanted to leave after his promo. Flair wanted to do his business and be gone, as Flair is booked to sign autographs for fans every show, as that is one of the ways ROH is trying to make back the exorbitant amount of money they paid for Flair in advance. Flair was thinking about leaving early on Friday after he finished his promos and signings, but thought better of it and stayed.
On 6/13, in NYC, Flair was booked to be a referee, but he pulled out because he didn't want to appear on ROH TV, in an effort to remain on good terms with the WWE. Flair did do his autograph signing. Flair was also booked in the main event, to do something that wouldn't be filmed for ROH TV. However, after Flair cut his first promo at the show, Flair returned to the locker room and made his way out a door when nobody from ROH management was around. Flair 100% snuck out, despite what else is being put out there by sites that take ROH money for advertisements.
Cary Silken was furious when he found out Flair was not in the venue, as that violated terms of his contract with Flair. Cary was upset and calling people trying to see if Flair was coming back or not. One person Cary called about all this contacted the DOI to see if we heard any more information when this was going on at the time. Cary did not know Flair had left and felt betrayed.
One must also remember that Flair was booked to help get ROH noticed on television, as Flair was going to be the hook to get casuals to check it out and the ambassador for business. ROH paid alot of money thinking that Flair would help turn around their business and get them noticed by casual wrestling fans. However, in that time, Flair has considered coming back to the ring and has done everything possible to make sure he doesn't piss off the WWE.
The Flair in ROH business idea has to be considered a failure because Flair won't appear on their TV anymore and has rejected ideas from ROH management. ROH invested 6 figures in Flair, and to not get him to do what they want is a kick in the balls, as you can imagine how much money that is not, just to have your investment not to hold up his end of the agreed deal when it was first signed.
Just think, all the money ROH used on Flair could've gone to a multitude of other people or ideas. Flair was being paid from start to finish and to ROH was going to be booked in a way that would elevate ROH. However, mid-way in, the wind was taken out of the sails and ROH had their legs cut off because of Flair's desire to return to the ring and not offend the WWE. ROH had to change all their plans, and to change their plans on a 6-figure guy is not something anyone would welcome.
The ironic thing in all of this is that Flair has NOT signed with the WWE. Of course, Flair has removed himself from being on ROH television in an effort not to piss off the WWE, but as of now, the WWE has nothing for him and Flair is not under contract. While we can't confirm this, a wrestler in ROH told the DOI, that "Flair is just here for the money and walks all over Cary because he perceives Cary as a money mark."
Someone close to ROH told the DOI that Flair's original intention of going to ROH was not for his own career, but to jump start the career of his son Reid Flair. However, once Reid was busted for drugs and his wrestling dream put on hold, Flair could give two shits about ROH.
The press release above confirms Flair is free to work anywhere, but it is Flair's choosing not to appear on ROH's TV.
Not only has ROH lost money on the Flair deal, ROH is losing a lot of money each time they run the TV tapings, due to the expenses for a double shot, the equipment, the hotels, the flights, rents for venues, etc. However, ROH has cut corners by not paying job guys, as ROH basically uses mark wrestlers who want to say they worked for ROH to fill job guy spots. Due to the expenses of the TV, ROH canceled their July set of tapings.
Of course this will all read as "gloom and doom", but the fact is ROH never canceled shows regularly under the Feinstein days or Sapolsky days, but ever since Adam Pearce has taken over, ROH has been canceling shows left or right. As one person to the DOI put it, "Gabe like a rat, jumped off that sinking ship."
Losing the PPV deal was mostly because the PPV's were hardly doing any buys and that can be because of many reasons. Most fans who buy PPVs don't want to buy a taped PPV. The ROH product does not draw casual fans at all and ROH basically has the same fan base they have had for years and has not grown. Trying to leave the DVD-model of business was a big jump and ROH has not landed on the side of profitability since the jump.
I wouldn't expect a live ROH PPV anytime soon, which is contrary to what others think, as a live PPV costs alot of money up front, which is something ROH does not have, unless Cary goes into his own personal money.
When Gabe Sapolsky was fired, Cary thought Adam was the key to change. If anything, they have lost fans and they have definitely lost their buzz. Their television show has been anything but "must-see TV" and the only people watching it are the people who know about ROH anyway.
Flair is scheduled to appear on three more shows for ROH, but don't look for him to do anything in the ring, unless he is doing the "I love ROH, this is the next big thing, blah blah blah, buy my autographs at intermission" promo. He won't appear on the TV show, so it's not like ROH can even write him off by elevating a heel who could leave Flair in a bloody heap. Shit, for $300, ROH could've paid Nikita Koloff to do the same thing and Koloff probably wouldn't have sneaked out the back door in NY. ROH of course is spinning that they knew about Flair leaving to save face.
As far as Dragon Gate, the company which abuses animals than posts pictures about it laughing about what they did, they have booked alot of ROH talent. It should be mentioned that alot of the original ROH contracts have expired and alot of ROH wrestlers are "free agents" so to speak.
On Dragon Gate, I heard PETA has been contacted. I have heard rumors they will be there to protest, but don't know if that is 100% on. I understand that the monkey abuse occurred in Japan and different cultures treat animals differently (Dog fighting is legal in most places in Latin America, while Cows are worshiped in certain places in India), but there is no way an American could look at those pictures of the DG guys beating up a monkey and say "hey that's great for biz!"
You know if someone like a Rob Feinstein, Zandig, Ian Rotten, or any other indy promoter was caught beating up that monkey, there would be public outcry and fans screaming for their head, but of course there is no morals in wrestling, so fans have publicly said on message boards that they'd rather ignore the issue and put their head in the sand, just so they can see some guys from Japan roll around in a ring in America in their underwear. Good to see these fans have their priorities straight.
American Dragon & Davey Richards are already booked for upcoming DGUSA shows and we have got it on good authority that Colt Cabana & Paul London will next. With ROH not offering contracts to new talent, ROH wrestlers are now looking for work in the area, even offering promoters a cheaper rate to promotions they have spurned in the past due to working for the ROH machine.
A well known money mark in the area told the DOI that he talked to Cary this week to see if there was interest in selling the company, but there seems to be no legs to this story in regards to anything of that nature actually happening.
ROH has also turned their backs on the guys who helped build the ROH name up, as even guys like J-Train, one of the most charismatic managers in all of wrestling today, has been unbooked. Just ask Larry Sweeney his thoughts on ROH these days.
There has also been a strain between Shimmer and ROH, as Gabe Sapolsky was a big fan of doing Shimmer matches and worked hand-in-hand with Prazak in making sure Shimmer was represented on the events. However, whether it is because of what Cary does in his personal life or not, womens wrestling in ROH is on the back burner and several women who were previously booked have been taken off shows. The women in Age of the Fall are no longer there, as perhaps the owner of ROH is more interested in the "Age of the Balls", as there are less females in ROH than any other wrestling company around today.
Several ROH wrestlers, two of which ROH management "forbade to talk to DOI", told the DOI that ROH is crumbling and can't see ROH lasting until the end of the year. One prominent ROH star said, "ROH will be done in three months." However, this is not the first time this has been said and ROH has been able to stay around all this time despite many people thinking they were going to go out of business. At the same time, I can't remember ROH having so much negativity and stories of lost money than at this point in time.
It is basically thought that if Dragon Gate can take off, it will be another nail in ROH's coffin, as fans dollars will go to DG rather than ROH, especially if ROH is being perceived to be stale. It is safe to say that Pearce did not change ROH around, he's driven it into the ground.
We'll have more on this huge story as more news becomes available.
