This is an open Community for the science fiction, fantasy, and horror community. We believe that the quality of online criticism of these genres is extremely poor and detrimental to intelligent discourse about SF/F/H, and we seek to remedy this situation. In particular, we believe that too many online critics and bloggers:
1. Have no background whatsoever in criticism, literature, or English,
2. Childishly suggest that positive reviews are the result of writers bribing critics,
3. Believe that negative reviews are inherently unconstructive or too cruel to the delicate egos of bad writers, or
3. Insult any reader who dares to disagree with their “informed opinion.”
This is not to say that all bloggers and online critics are bad; there are many writers whose criticism we read and enjoy. However, many of the reviews that appear on genre websites are ignorant, unprofessional, and poorly-reasoned and poorly-written. We intend this letter to encourage serious and intellectual discussion about genre fiction. To borrow a phrase from T.S. Eliot, we need "to criticize the critic." Our genre will flourish only if we can monitor online critcism and raise the level of critical discourse online to a higher standard.
