Titles had power. However, despite what the scriptures might say, more often than not connection or money were the true measure of a man. Virtue didn’t count for much in this life. At least pirates made the best of it, their leaders were voted for so expectations were usually met. Usually, although as with many things occasionally disappointment was inevitable. In the small room the king and her captain lay together listening to the merriment downstairs. The extra coin from the king’s entourage had apparently managed to help even the most disappointed jade forget her initial consternation at Elizabeth’s appearance.

Anamaria shifted closer to the other woman, they weren’t concerned by such matters. Up here in the flickering candlelight, away from the titles, the expectations, the code and the sea they were just them. Simply two people with the same wants and needs and the power to comfort each other.
