As nice as it was to see Fox News host Neil Cavuto even question the recent political ad from Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee in which the image of a cross floats behind the head of the former Baptist Minister as he talks about Jesus, I quickly found it was all just an opportunity to invite on atheist Michael Newdow and strawman Newdow's arguments as you can see in my latest 3 minute 9 second YouTube video at:

After showing the clips and my analysis, I ask:

Am I right that atheist Michael Newdow PWNed Fox News' Neil Cavuto by presenting an argument Cavuto repeatedly could not address?

And, on the bigger question:

Was Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee wrong to use a cross and the name of Jesus for political purposes as he did in that recent political ad?

Ludwig Feuerbach said, "God is man writ large." If your religion's God(s) was/were a man, how would you breifly characterize him/them?

Also, as a feminist has taken specific note of the gender in "God is man writ large," I find it interesting that the Greeks and Norse pagans have fate in the hands of women (the Moirai and Norns respectively). What do you make of this?

Dear Friends,

Operation Holiday cards was an amazing success this year. Last year we collected 1,500 cards and set a goal of 2,000 cards for this year. This year we collected over 16,000 cards! We were drowning in cards, but it was wonderful! The cards were sent to Balad Air Base in Baghdad on Monday and Tuesday. It took 16 boxes. Thank you for helping to make Operation Holiday Card such a huge success.

How many of you have started the survey(s), not finished them, or had stopped because of the deadline? Operation Holiday Card Update

Operation Holiday Card is well under way. With two weeks left in the collection I have collected 586 cards. This number may seem small but I know of many people who are planning on sending in cards in the next two weeks. Holiday cards have been coming in from all over the country; from schools, workplaces, scout troops, and individuals. What a wonderful “Thank You” to the troops overseas.

As I celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday, I am thankful that my family is together this year. There are so many families separated by deployments this time of year. What a better way to say Thank You than to sign a box of Holiday cards as a family after your meal. Could your family sign a box of cards? Alcohol, Baptists, and Cana, oh my!

While researching the reasons why my Baptist coworker isn't allowed to drink alcohol, I stumbled upon the concept of two wines in the Baptist faith: one being newly crushed, and thus unfermented, and one being the alcoholic kind we sell in stores today. I went back, trying to apply the concept of this unfermented wine to older stories. For the most part, it worked. But eventually, I came upon an impasse: the Wedding at Cana. The 'punchline', as it were, is that one typically serves the good wine first, so that once people are nice and buzzed (and thus their tastebuds are slightly less discerning) you give them the lesser wine, and they're less likely to notice. This concept doesn't fly with non-alcoholic wine, as it's the alcohol that allows for the lesser wine to be served second.

This would mean (as far as I can tell) that both Jesus and Mary were involved in alcoholic wine, if not to the point of full intoxication, then at least to a point beyond refreshment. And there were no moral warnings against intoxication here, so obviously this part didn't disturb them.

How can I stay in the Baptist mindset and make this grok? I'm having difficulty, and hoping you guys can help me.

Three Questions

Please answer the questions as honestly as possible:

Milbert, a 49 years old unmarried man, was shopping one day; however, while paying the cashier, he seemed to go crazy and killed the cashier -- a mother of two young children. Milbert was soon after arrested. Before trial, Milbert was given a brain scan and it was discovered that he had a tumour on his amygdala. One week later, Milbert was given brain surgery and the tumour was removed. After Milbert recovered from the surgery, he was put on trial. Several doctors testified that Milbert would be unlikely to lose control now that the tumour was removed; however, the judge still sentenced Milbert to a long jail term. Was the judge correct? Why or why not?

Dr. Froop is a 38 year old research scientist. He was working on a formula to cure cancer, and he was sure he found the answer. He only had to do a small amount of research; however, the company that was funding his project cut him off for a different project to create a new bubblegum cola. Dr. Froop was positive that with just a bit more research he could provide the world with the cure for cancer. Dr. Froop decided to forge some data and release the project to scientific journals in the hope that he would be able to gain new funding and then prove his theory correct. Unfortunately, his forged data was discovered, and he was fired from his job and arrested for fraud. Other scientists are still unsure if his theory is correct or not. Should Dr. Froop have forged the data? Why or why not?

Karl has decided that he wants to sacrifice himself to help the human race. He has heard that a few scientific studies are being held back due to the unethical nature of performing on human subjects. Karl seeks out and finds Dr. Eve Eel, a prestigious researcher, and requests that she conduct experiments on him that normally would not be conducted on others. At first, Dr. Eve Eel is hesitant and suspects that something may be psychologically wrong with Karl; however, after many psychological examinations it is determined that there is nothing abnormal with him. Karl gives his signed consent for the experiments after the doctor makes the study as transparent to as possible and provides him with all necessary information. If the experiments are conducted, Dr. Eve Eel may cause Karl to suffer through pain and perhaps even death while also risking her own imprisonment. Given that Karl consents, the experiments are conducted in an ethical manner, and that the studies may benefit the human race should Dr. Eve Eel proceed?

Operation Holiday Card

Dear Friends,

Believe it or not the Holiday season is upon us. With Halloween over the stores are filled with Christmas decorations. Last year with my husband deployed in Kuwait I started Operation Holiday Card to collect Christmas, Hanukkah, and holiday cards for troops overseas during this season. It was huge success last year. I started the project with a goal of collecting 200 cards to send to one base in Kuwait. The response was amazing. When the collection was over I had over 1500 cards sent to Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and Balad Air Base in Baghdad, Iraq. The cards were passed out to the troops at dinner on Christmas Day. As each person signed in at the mess hall they were handed a Holiday card. The cards were read, passed around the tables among friends, and many were eventually hung on the wall for all to see.

It is time once again to start collecting cards. My goal is to collect over 2000 cards. This year many of the cards will go to the Balad Air Base in Baghdad. Balad is “home” to over 30,000 men and women from all branches of service. Balad also contains a large field hospital so many of the cards will go to the patients and staff. The holidays is a very hard time to be so far away from home and these brave men and women need our support and encouragement.

I am asking people to write a note to an unknown service member inside your card, seal it, and send it to the address below. Cards can be for Christmas, Hanukkah (please write this on the back of your envelope), or general Season’s Greetings. Your words of support mean so much to these men and women. Remember each card you send is another service member touched.

Please pass the word about this project to everyone you know. Feel free to post it in your journals, other communities, promote it in your workplace, or your place of worship. One woman from my church last year collected 200 cards in her workplace. How many cards can you collect? Cards can be sent to:

Moral Question

If you know of a situation where you strongly suspect abuse in your own family, what do you do? Do you flaunt the family rule of live and let live? Do you confront the abuser? ...do you confront the abused? What if your livelihood depends on the matriarch/strong enforcer of live and let live/turn a blind eye mentality? As a very religious/spiritual/insert your preferred verbiage here/ person I wonder where the line is of being moral and being an overturned of family law is.

I'm Vicki. I was raised Sunni Muslim. I have not practiced in over 15 years. I've been to church with friends a couple times and I have Jewish and Buddhist friends as well as agnostic and aetheist. That is pretty much the extent of my knowledge on different religions. So I decided to take a World Religions class this semester. I've been doing pretty well but I am not going to lie, the Judaism still has me perplexed. My teacher said we have to know the following questions for our multiple choice test next Monday. I plan to google and wikipedia the answers, but I also kinda like hearing mutliple answers by other people as well and I like discussing it for better clarification. It helps me understand better for some reason.

I.

Premise:

Flawed, recursive and self-perpetuating systems can only be changed through radical means, through unexpected and extreme alterations to the rules- even sometimes illogical-seeming changes.

Our way of seeing the world is fundamentally flawed.

We betray each other and the world itself in the grip of selfish mania and pursuit of shallow gratifications. Other human beings are viewed by us largely in terms of what service or pleasure they can offer us.

We have become so impoverished in wisdom that we cannot consider the mental and organic system of which we are a vital part to be anything other than a buffet of tasty goods which should be there for our taking.

The cost of our lives is not sustainable; soon, the world will not be able to reciprocate.

The emotional and spiritual cost of our lives long ago bankrupted the system, leaving in us further hollow places to fill with more deceptions.

II.

Flawed, recursive and self-perpetuating systems can only be changed through radical means, through unexpected and extreme alterations to the rules- even sometimes illogical-seeming changes.

We must be the radicals now.

We must be prepared to do the unexpected.

The rules have to be altered now, in extreme ways.

It may seem illogical, but the cult of "logic", as it has been generally manipulated and understood, has failed us long enough.

There was a time when people knew how to live on this planet. Though the Modernists and Post-modernists will defend their "cult of the modern day" by claiming that the world has "always been like it is now, with the same problems and issues", this is not true. This is a lie born in the most wishful of all thinking- the wish to believe that nothing ever changes, thus exempting themselves of any hint of responsibility; they want to believe that we modern people are above criticism, and that we are now as wise as people ever have been.

But we aren't as wise as people ever have been. We are more isolated than people ever have been; we are more wasteful than people ever have been; we are more capable of spreading death and destruction than people ever have been, and we are more distanced from our humanity than people ever have been.

Our world's ecology suffers through lack of concern;

Our mental ecology suffers through lack of understanding;

Our spiritual ecology suffers through lack of awareness and belief.

III.

Premise:

We must reconsider all of the basic assumptions that are inculcated into us from a very early time.

It is no longer possible to take more than we give back. If we continue that, we die.

It is no longer possible to assume that we know more than people have ever known, or that the wisdom of other times and cultures is useless. If we continue that, we will miss vital clues that could save this world.

It is no longer possible to continually build divisions between ourselves and this world and the other living beings within it. If we continue that, we kill and then we die.

It is no longer possible to believe that the universe can be reduced to some simple, basic truths, easily explainable in a laboratory. If we continue that, we will die long before that impossible search is completed.

It is no longer possible to consider this world in terms of self-interest only, nor in terms of "other human beings" only; non-human actors and beings in this system rely on us as much as we rely on them. If we continue to think like we are the only beings of importance in this world, we die alone.

It is no longer possible to think that we are divinely chosen among all life forms. If we continue that, we will repeat history.

It is no longer possible to think that death is something that only happens to other people, or that life is about the accumulation of wealth. If we continue that, we die leaving behind a legacy of denial and greed.

IV.

We now live in a time when it is radical to think about the well being of others, along with ourselves. So be a radical.

Nothing could be more unexpected than someone standing up for the sacredness of the world, against the tide of blind materialism. So do the unexpected.

Nothing could be more extreme today than someone turning their back on artificial and unbalanced social hierarchies based on wealth. So be an extremist.

We live in a time when it is radical to devote one's time to being a caretaker for this world, rather than a person who seeks to "maximize resources". So be a radical.

It's unexpected today for people to prefer the work of human hands, the art and crafts of individuals, to the dull glimmer of mass production. So do the unexpected.

It seems so illogical today for people to embrace different models of spirituality, beyond the socially-accepted models that have become rote, and which have largely contributed to the condition of our world today. Never mistake it, or let yourself ignore it- in spirituality lies the true seeds of worldview. So embrace a new logic. Realize that belief is not just a personal choice, but a world-impacting reality.

Flawed, recursive and self-perpetuating systems can only be changed through radical means, through unexpected and extreme alterations to the rules- even sometimes illogical-seeming changes.
