Sometimes the e-mails from Amazon just crack me up. Today I got a rec for Tinker Bell on DVD. This is apparently related to having purchased or rated Shrek II. I'm such the Tinker Bell type, don't you think?

I'm trying to prep things for being out of the office on Thursday and Friday. I've pretty much got everything covered. I just have to leave each person a note with explicit details for what they are doing. Our 2IC was asking what she needed to do and I carefully held back the insane laughter as I let her know everything was taken care of. She knows nothing about my job and not only do I not have the time to teach her, I'm not sure she'd be able to pick it up in time to actually do it this week. So I've divvied things up between people who can handle various parts. I fear the mound of paperwork that will be on my desk when I return on Monday.

But I will be with B in 2 days!!!!!!!!!!!!! Two. Days. Whee!!!!!!! I cannot wait.

I don't usually remember dreams, but I had two doozies last night.

I had a dream last night that I don't fully remember now. But in my dream, Chris was stopping from doing something I wanted and needed to do. I was so annoyed that I actually woke up, got out of bed and paced the living room. When I came back, Chris had woken up and asked what was wrong. I told him in my dream he was blocking me from whatever (I could remember it then) and that it pissed me off. He gently reassured the raving lunatic me that he wouldn't do that and snuggled me back to sleep. Does anyone else have dreams that get you so riled up you wake up angry at someone/something? I hate that.

Then this morning I had the most bizarre dream. cut for length and sexual content that's a little on the bizarre size )

Okay. Back to work. Maybe some writing. We shall see.

Local woman moving to Belgium for health care

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
from Colorado

Calder's joints dislocate every time she moves. She says her arms and shoulders dislocate when she moves. Her right hip dislocates when she walks. She can't sleep. "When I sleep they continually dislocate," Calder says, "I can't put blankets on my toes, because they continually dislocate."

She suffers from Ehlers-Danlos. It's a rare disease that makes her tissue so flimsy the joints can't hold together.

She says she once was told to sing to distract from the pain. She sings all the time. Her only other relief is Ibuprofin. It's the only treatment she can afford. Her husband's health care won't cover treatment for this disease. She says, "There's so few doctors over here that treat this disease, and it would be unaffordable. I couldn't find any doctors on Medicare who would treat it."

So, Calder and her husband are moving. They're selling their home in Colorado Springs, and they've sold most of their possessions.

They're moving to Belgium. She says, "3 of the top doctors in the world in Ehler's-Danlos are out of the University of Gent, that's in Belgium."

Barbara Calder was featured in a WSJ article a while back about the impossibility of getting treatment in the US if you have a serious illness. Even if you have health care insurance. The number one cause of personal bankruptcy in the US - health care bills. A third of those filing for bankruptcy in the USA have health care insurance.

Catholic boards vote against HPV vaccine

You know what? Canada is far from perfect. This kind of thing drives me insane. Didn't The West Wing do an episode on HPV? Guest-starring Elmo and Big Bird.

Alberta tries to deal with Catholic backlash against HPV vaccine in schools
By John Cotter, The Canadian Press

EDMONTON - Alberta is scrambling to come up with a backup plan to vaccinate girls against a virus that causes cervical cancer as more Catholic school boards opt out over a program they say condones premarital sex.

So far at least six of Alberta's 20 Catholic boards have voted against allowing girls in Grades 5 and 9 to be inoculated against HPV in schools. More boards are expected to say no after Calgary Bishop Fred Henry spoke out against the program during a meeting with school trustees.

Ted Paszek, president of the Alberta Catholic School Trustees' Association, said the bishop's message at a meeting last month resonated with many of the boards. About 8,000 girls in the Catholic system are eligible to receive the vaccine this fall.

"The bishop said it would be unacceptable for Catholic schools to be offering this vaccine, that it would tacitly condone premarital sexual activity," said Paszek, who is also president of the Elk Island Catholic School Division, which is to vote on the HPV vaccine this Thursday.

"My guess is that over the next two weeks there will be more Catholic boards across the province that will either be considering it for the first time or reconsidering it at the request of the bishop." [...]

The debate over the vaccine isn't confined to Alberta, however. At least one Catholic school district in Ontario voted earlier this year not to allow it to be given on school premises.

About 1,300 women contract the virus each year in Canada. About 400 of them die of cervical cancer annually. It is the second most common type of cancer for women between the ages of 20 and 44.

The federal government has made $300 million available to the provinces to pay for the vaccine Gardasil. Alberta's share is $30 million over three years.

Haggerty said the province wants parents with children in Catholic schools to know that they haven't been forgotten.

"We want parents to understand and to stay calm," Haggerty said. "If they want their daughters to have this vaccine, the provincial government is working diligently to make sure that there are alternatives for those girls."

Full article here.

Giving girls a vaccine against a potentially deadly STD != condoning premarital sex. The logic escapes me. It's like saying the flu shot condones kids rubbing snot in each other's faces.

Oh Canada!

I got into work before 8am today. Not the earliest I've ever gotten into the office, but still waaaaay too early. *falls over* Nobody should have to go into work early the day after a major holiday feast. I had to stop at Timmy's for a medium double double. Not my usual thing -- I usually don't drink anything in the morning -- but I needed the caffeine.

My boss and one of the guys from our former team were filming a couple of openings for internal promos, and I was supposed to learn how to work the video camera. Didn't actually get to learn, but I did observe, and splashed my boss with water to simulate the mist at Niagara Falls. (We work with backdrops, not like we were doing a location shoot. *g*)

Today's election day. I live in a Liberal stronghold so it's almost a moot point. My sister says she'll vote NDP. My parents will probably vote Liberal. Once in a while my dad threatens to vote Conservative, but I don't think he's ever actually done it in years. He didn't last time, afaik. I'm debating if I want to vote NDP or Liberal. It's not like I want the NDP candidate in my riding to win -- I just want to express dissatisfaction with the Liberals by re-electing our rep with fewer votes. Does that make any sense?

So hey! Good morning! How's everybody's turkey hangover? *g*

OMG MITCH BENN/NEIL GAIMAN.

"The first thing I noticed about Neil is that he's looking rather more kempt than I'd ever seen him before. For years he's been famous for his mop of curly black hair, which generally looked as if someone had thrown it at him. This evening (or rather yesterday evening now) it was trimmed (although still longish) and rather raffishly swept back. Rather suited him."

No, it's not the crazyland of [info]spnstoryfinders. I just stumbled upon [info]spnlostfic and it seems like a nice place to look for fics and even find some good recs.

Check out their profile page. I think we can help the comm grow into a healthy environment for us.

Whoohoo! I got promoted!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Okay, so last night was pretty horrid, since I fell and hurt one leg, and the cat mauled my other leg, but I made it through and I feel better today.

But the news that astounded me this morning? I've been promoted to full-time Night Supervisor, five nights a week!!! So forget my crazy old schedule, now it's a solid 11pm-8am every night, with Thursday and Sunday nights off (though my sunday might switch to saturday night, we'll see.)

WHOOHOO! Night Supervisor, bay-bee!!!

Positive Post Number Two! (as in very silly and embarrassing, but also POSITIVE.) I was over in [info]keepaofthecheez's lj viewing a large Padalecki picture (as in the picture was large, because he's large all the time so that wouldn't be very illuminating as an adjective) and realized that I simply couldn't decide whether to leave it scrolled all the way up or pushed down like two clicks on my down arrow. I was fidgeting over it, too, over millimeters of picture. And so I decided to make a poll! (If you can see all of the picture, just PRETEND. Or for full effect, view image and then click on it to make it a little bit bigger.)

Picture to view in order to vote in poll. )

Poll #1278257 epic battle!

New Layout

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
For the first time in over a year and a half, I have a new layout. I'm sure there are still a few bugs I need to work out (colors and such), but overall, it seems to be working for me. The gorgeous rotating banner was made by the talented [info]ignited. I need to rehaul my userinfo and do some other cleaning, but I'm glad I finally got this up.
