Red Sox inquire about Lowe
http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/77430

At the right price, he would be a good option as a 4th started, allowing us to move Wakefield to the 5th spot. But only for the right price.

Thoughts anyone?

I already know most people are going to say yuck. But Lowe IS a good pitcher, and not just because he's been pitching in the NL West lately. Plus, unlike Beckett, Wakefield and a possible singing of Burnett, you can count on Lowe to pitch 200 innings every year.

Accoridng to tRA+ which is defense and ballpark independent, he was the 6th best starter in baseball last year. Statistically, he's been a legitimate number one starter each of the last three years (a tRA+ of 118 or more) while averaging over 200 innings a year.

And he dominated the AL East as well before he developed his substance abuse problem. 190 ERA+ in 1999, 198 ERA+ in 2001, 128 ERA+ in 2001, 177 ERA+ in 2002.

I totally agree with you. I think it would be a wise move to pick him up.

Honestly, I don't know why people are adverse to this at all. He's a sinker-baller who has only given up more than 20 homers once and his career Boston numbers are pretty great. I say if we offer him a 24 mil three year deal I'd be completely happy with that. Beckett, Daisuke, Lester, Lowe, Wakefield looks pretty goddamn good to me!

The question is, would he accept 3 years/24 million... something tells me Boras will be telling him he could get a lot more elsewhere.

Yeah, to this day I hated how the Sox treated Arroyo and basically screwed him. :(

I like it as long as they don't overspend on him. He'd be a really good 4th starter... that would leave the 5th spot for Wakefield and/or Masterson if someone gets hurt.

Or it opens up even more the possibility of trading Masterson for Saltalamacchia or Teagarden. The more I've thought about it, the more I'm comfortable giving Lowe even a 40/4 opt. 5 kind of deal. That way he potentially can end his career with the team he got a ring with (and hopefully will win one or two more.) 4, I don't think, is too outlandish, because he's proven to be quite durable.

More than that would make me a little squeamish -- certainly the Sox don't need to load a ton of talent to be competitive having won 95 with essentially the crew we have here, and Lowe would be quite the improvement over Byrd, in my opinion. The bottom line is this: if we get a Lowe-caliber pitcher (or better, Ben Sheets on a one-year low-risk contract anyone?) and Teixiera, we're not in good shape; because we're already in good shape. In that scenario, we're in phenomenal, perhaps dominant shape.

Yeah, I'd have no problem giving Lowe a 40/4... I don't think they should spend anymore than that though. I do like the idea of getting Teixiera but I'm not sure they're actually going to make a push. I do think they need to make a move to get Papi some protection though.

The problem is, outside of Teixiera, I don't know who else they can go to. Ludwick is apparently available, but under the best-case scenario he's a lower-grade, less-experienced Matt Holliday, likely an all right corner-outfielder who had a single break-out year, and potentially a complete bust.

If the Brewers somehow end up with Sabathia they may be interested in dumping a little potential salary, and that says Braun all over the place but this is a highly unlikely scenario.

Though I think it'd be hillarious from an existentially detached position, Manny ain't coming back.

Thome's old and wouldn't have anywhere to play; I think Casey should get re-signed for that position anyway.

If the Red Sox are serious about giving Ortiz protection and are convinced that some combination of Youk/Bay/Pedroia will not be effective, they need to run hard and relentless at Teixiera. If not, they need to really show that they're dedicated to entering the season with a potential A-S rotation; definitely making a run at Sheets, maybe showing a run for Pedro, and making at least an affected run at Sabathia.

I seriously hope that the Sox do make a run at T but there are so many teams out there looking for a hitter like him. I'm very curious what the final outcome is going to be.

I do think they need to get some sort of protection for Ortiz but I'm not really sure who else would fit (and is available) should the Sox lose out on Teixiera.
