Worried...
I really am afraid Keith Foulke might've lost his touch...
Is anybody else as worried as me???

Foulke is fine as long as Francona remembers one simple rule:

DO NOT, under any circumstances, BRING IN FOULKE IN THE 9TH INNING.

Seriously, he's been great in his 7th/8th inning appearances all season, but every time he comes to the mound in the 9th, he completely falls apart.

I know, I can't believe they brought him in for the 9th and we lost the game!

Oh wait

i'm not really worried at all. he's a little bit up and down but that's why he's no longer the closer. i think if bringing wells back doesn't work, foulke should be starting. he used to start way back in the day, i think it's time he earns the money he's making

Foulke most definitely is not the pitcher he used to be. It of cour'se would have been nice in a perfect world to have Foulke be his dominant self again so we could move Papelbon to the rotation. That's not going to happen though. In the real world, Foulke losing his touch is not a bad thing at all. Not only did it give Papelbon a chance to prove himself as a big league pitcher and build his confidence in a way no one could have imagined before the season, but we don't really need another setup man.

Honestly, I think Foulke was simply rusty. He also should not be brought into 9th inning situations. He along with Tavarez are our alternate set up guys. The Red Sox already the best closer in baseball and 2 stellar set up men. Timlin has an ERA under 1 and Riske (who we now have back) has been a better, more consistent relief man than Timlin over the past 3 years. Like Timlin, Riske is also a workhorse. Foulke as much as he helped us in 04 really isn't an important piece to our team so this doesn't bother me.

If you say so...

Our first 3 starters are also workhorses. Even though all three of them have struggled early, they have managed to still pitch at least 7 full innings in almost 60 percent of their starts. The newest of them, Beckett even with his struggles, has pitched at least 7 innings in 7 out of 9 of his starts. They have pitched at least 6 innings in 3 out of every 4 of their starts. Heck, even Clement has finished 6 innings in 5 out of every 8 of his starts. The Red Sox have the best defense in the majors to prevent the runs and one of the best offenses in baseball to create runs as well.

The Red Sox really do not have any need for a 4th set up guy. And like arrowintwolakes has already pointed out, we have help waiting in the minors.

I'm vaguely concerned that his knees might be acting up, but could just be underuse - he's only pitched four times in the last eleven days, and he seems to do better when he pitches every day or every other day. He definitely wasn't keeping the ball down enough, though, they weren't hitting many ground balls at all.

I agree, I have growing concerns about Keith Foulke's effectiveness... and also, I'm starting to think Barry Bonds might have used steroids in the past.

Does Francona show the same loyalty to certian players that Torre does?

If by loyalty you mean putting mediocre pitchers in situations where they don't belong because you have a good feeling about them, Francona does not suffer from that disease to the extent that Torre does. Francona had trouble realizing that Seanez was not a good pitcher but he got the idea with Foulke pretty quickly. In the first game of the season, when the game was on the line Francona put in Papelbon. It wasn't until the Sox had a safe lead late in the game in the next game that Francona put Foulke in. Ever since Foulke pitched bad in that one game Francona hasn't put him in where he doesn't belong.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I hate it when Torre continously marches out guys like Sturtze and Erickson to get shelled. I was wondering if Terry did the same thing since I hear quite a few complaints about him from some Sox fans that aren't in this community.

Francona often is critisized for not making moves when he should. Lately Francona's done a pretty good job but earlier in the season he was putting mop up relievers in important spots. He had a little too much faith in Tavarez and Seanez but it looks like that's changed. Didn't the Yankees sign Erickson simply because Giambi was a friend of his and told Cashman to give him a shot?

No, that is why they called him up. They Erickson was a Spring Training Invitee and he posted something like a 2.56 ERA. He was pitching well in AAA until he got roughed up.

Foulke's been pretty much fine, in fact good, for the rest of this season. I HAVE been worried that his knees would start to act up again, I heard somewhere (I forget where, maybe rotoworld) that the effects of the injections in his knees had worn off. Hopefully today was a fluke, not knees throwing off his mechanics again.

im not worried, foulke is fine, sure he didnt have a great outing but really who cares, the homers he gave up were to arod and posada, two quality hitters who were stumped for the rest of the game, oh fucking well...i have faith in foulke to setup but paps the closer for the rest of this season, just imagine next season when paps most likely moving into the rotation with wells retiring...schill, wake, beckett, clement and papelllllllllllllbon
