creature concepts & the SDP

The last post sort of inspired me to try to come up with something specifically for this community; creature concepts, finds..anything.
( I started with creature concepts. [2] )
As I was doing research for the jaw structure of the pangolin (for that second one), I came across a strange image of something labeled as a 'baleen squid'. Intrigued, I clicked it and explored the main site. I was blown away by the creature concepts I found. And now I'm going so far as to post them here (the aquatics, at least) for the sake of sharing them with others.
( It was called 'the Speculative Dinosaur Project.' )

I love how something can look so freaky and be so beautiful at the same time. Be sure to watch the video. Hope it inspires someone.

This is an old piece, and I had always intended to post it, but never did. So since this place has quieted down a lot, I thought I'd take the time now...
( Yay for mutilated whales )
The original ballpoint version can be seen here, but I wanted to give it a deadlier feel to it. I really like this whale design and may go back to elaborate on it.

though it seams the community is... kinda dead....
in the beginning there was a link posted to a flash game. About evolution and written with a very nifty adaptive difficulty engine. Good game, if you didnt play it the first time, check it out.
Not sure how much anyone else follows video games, but apparently flOw is going to be a PS3 game.

I wish fiddling around with textures in Photoshop and built a red, flame-y thing that seemed not unlike the Sea. I got to think of the possibility of storms of bioluminescent algae, all fiery light and no heat. And, knowing that fish tend to go completely nuts around that kind of thing, I invented these little beggars to populate the firestorm...
( with a tongue like a flame of fire )
I'm calling them Seraphim gars for now--from the original meaning of "seraph" as "fiery serpent". They bloom around the same time the algae do, and use their teeth exclusively for killing each other--their actual food is the algal bloom, which they return to when they're inevitably ripped apart in blind territory battles.

Hey guys.
I've been working on this for a while. It would have had a background, but I got tired of trying to get it to cooperate. I can't seem to ever get the Sea to look right on my pieces which really irritates me....
Aaaanyways, I was sketching one night and my hubby suggested that I draw a skeleton fish, and that got me thinking that it would be really cool if I did something that was semi-translucent. Something where you could see the skeletal structure and the organs beneath the skin, and
If anyone has suggestions on doing the Sea background-wise I'd definitely appreciate them. I'm having trouble getting the nice murky/translucent/see-through effect that you all are getting on your pieces. I want the colors on my creatures to be somewhat visible, but it seems like I can't do that without washing out the background... Sigh.

Felt kind of guilty having been a member for a few days and not submitted something. So here's step 1 of a piece I'm working on, I'll be adding color to it next. Forgive me for the crappy scan and the fact that the ink is far blurrier on the left than it is on the right. But hey, it's a sea-slug dragon. Woo!
