Junk Band Version of Casey [Jul. 12th, 2008|11:46 am]

rteacher

I've been playing around with found sounds. Not all these noises are recorded by me, and I'll have to give credit where credit is due if I use these for real.

I took it pretty slow, which means if we go this way with it, it will either be an Epic 15 minutes or we'll need to pick and choose which verses are the strongest.

Thought That's What Havin' Kids Was For (Or Lazy Man's Blues) v.1

[A7]Who's gonna wash my car?
Said who's gonna wash my car?
[D7]Ain't no one gonna wash it?
No one gonna wash it.
[A7]Who's gonna wash my car?
[E7]It ain't gonna wash itself.
[D7]Guess I'll have to do it myself.
[A7]Guess I'll have to wash my own car.

Who's gonna mow my lawn?
Said who's gonna mow my lawn?
Ain't no one gonna mow it?
No one gonna mow it.
Who's gonna mow my lawn?
It ain't gonna mow itself.
Guess I'll have to do it myself.
Guess I'll have to mow my own lawn.

Who's gonna paint my house?
Said who's gonna paint my house?
Ain't no one gonna paint it?
No one gonna paint it.
Who's gonna paint my house?
It ain't gonna paint itself.
Guess I'll have to do it myself.
Guess I'll have to paint my own house.

I thought that's what havin' kids was for.
I thought that's what havin' kids was for.
Cain't get them to do it.
Cain't get them to do it.
I thought that's what havin' kids was for.
They sure as hell won't move themselves.
Guess I'll have to do it myself.
Ain't gonna have no kids no more.

This song's about what happened last night, folks around here get started early with the fireworks.

http://fabricari.com/music/fourth-of-july.mp3

Fourth of July in My Backyard
Capo II, 3/4
(Chords not transposed)

[D]me, my sweetheart, [G]and the [D]boy
[D]sit out back on a [A7]friday night
[D]roast marshmallows and [G]sausages[D]
[D]faces lit by the [A7]firelight

jeremy sees a ufo
costellations crawl the moonless sky
the pond lights up with fireworks
in the distance float some fireflies

Chorus:
[G7]it's 4th of July in [C]my backyard
[G7]no place I'd rather [C]be
[G7]4th of July in my [C]backyard
[Am]and I'm happy as I'll ever [D]be

burn my lip with a roasting stick
laugh about it anyway
grab a beer and take a sip
all my worries fade away

get my guitar, strum some chords
hum a happy tune
the smoke is sticking to my clothes
sparks climb to find the moon

it's 4th of July in my backyard
no place I'd rather be
4th of July in my backyard
happy as I'll ever be

Like all the other songs, this one's up for revisioning.

Lottery Tickets Audio, Take 3 (Banjo Take) [Jun. 29th, 2008|02:51 pm]

I love how this turned out. Just as the lyrics get too cynical, Grant's chorus sets it straight:

And, well, banjo! Update: Uploaded a cleaner take.

Lottery Ticket v.3 [Jun. 29th, 2008|01:45 pm]

Man, the feed back I got from you guys helped take this to another level. I'm really happy with the changes. I took another pass at it to play with the timing and phrasing. I cut out a bit - started to get really long with the chorus added. I'll follow up with a rough recording in a bit to see how it sounds:

Lottery Tickets v3

[G]Oh times are tough,
[C]so I bought a lottery ticket.
[D7]And even though I won five bucks
[C]that ain't enough to fix [G]it.

Those banks they keep callin' me.
Tellin' me to pay.
Well I can't send them any checks
until one comes my way.

Sure as hell cant sell my house
I'm sub prime and upside-down.
And I can only get odd jobs cause
the factory's shutting down.

Chorus (See Below)

Buddy have you seen
the price of gasoline?
they say it's the cost of crude
That's makin' people mean.

but I don't know if I believe
a word that pres'dent says
it's what I shell out at the pump
that gets me seeing red

All day you get bombarded
by pundits and politicians
they sell their wars and reforms
on that god-damned television

Chorus (See Below)

So I guess I'll take my tax rebate
and buy the kids some food.
the little bit I have left over,
gonna spend it on some booze.

And now I'll get to walkin'
to the corner liquor store.
Food costs so much I can't afford
my whiskey any more.

So I'll buy me some cheap beer
and a couple lottery tickets
and when I win, I'll tell my boss
right where he can stick it.

Chorus:
[G]Oh dear me
[A7]ain't my life so sad
[D]Things are turning from the worse
into the really bad [G]

All the days I've walked this earth
Lord I'm getting' tired.
You say the sun is shining bright
But I say you're a liar

Red Eyed Johnny Logo and Website [Jun. 25th, 2008|08:41 am]

Boy! I guess I killed the fun last night by not having a tablet. :)

I made a mock up website, since I'm a dork and have fun making websites.

http://www.grantthomasonline.com/redeyedjohnny/

I have to figure out how to arrange the content and eventually maybe we'll leach have a bio page or something.

We should write up a little press release and send it on to comixtalk. I'm sure they'd be impressed by the magic of webcomics uniting people across the country.

Red Eyed Johnny Logo [Jun. 24th, 2008|04:57 pm]

Guys- I'm really pleased with the folk songs we did last winter. My wife think Cotton Eye Joe is one of the best songs I've been a part of in a long time.

I'd like to put up a little section on my website and I've been trying out some fonts for a logo. I put them on this album cover I've been working on for my own stuff so consider it to just be a filler image.

Tell me which one you think is best. I have some I'm partial to, but I wanted your input, too.

Should we go saloon style?
Johnny Cash Show?
Spaghetti Western?
. . . or wanted psoter?

Red Eyed Johnny Returns [Apr. 12th, 2008|11:36 am]

rteacher
Hey guys. . . its been a while. I've finally gotten around to putting some 'lectric guitar onto Steve's version of Hey Hey My My.

I also have question for you. I usually put out a little demo record every June of stuff I worked on over the past year. I'll make a free download, but if I sell any CDs, they'll either be just enough to cover costs, or any profits will go to me webhosting fees and/or advertising for my site.

Are you guys cool with me including some of the folk songs we did together on the album?

'nuther rough RPM song [Feb. 10th, 2008|09:28 pm]

Here's another song I'm working on for RPM. I was going for kind of a Blur sound. The banjo part still needs a lot of work.

Hey guys! Here's half of a song I'm working on for RPM Challenge. Eventually, its going to have little anecdotes from the Desert Fathers. Enjoy!

They canceled school today because its -25. I think we could have sucked it up and gone instead of being inside when its all nice in June. Oh well, I guess we can't have kids getting frostbite waiting for the bus!
Any hoo. I finally had a chance to work on Red Eyed Johnny stuff.
I added an organ to Neal's Smiths song and EQ-ed his voice a little.
Here it is:

Queen Jane Approximately (and finally!) [Jan. 8th, 2008|12:18 am]

nvonflue
Her'es my additions to Queen Jane, I put some low piano to work as a sort of bass, simple melody, really...

I also did some backing vocals, but don't know if they're all that necessary, so feel free to disregard them.

I tried a mix with all the elements, but couldn't get Steve's tamborine or harp track to import properly, so could only include the banjo.

Hope you guys dig it!

Queen Jane Approximately [Steve's Mix] [Jan. 5th, 2008|03:13 pm]

I'm not sure any of these tracks actually make the song better, but I had fun none-the-less. Feel free not to use any of it. There's banjo, harmonica, and tambourine.

(btw, I've been uploading these to our common share for redeyedjohnny@fabricari.com without any problems.)

Hey Hey, My My [Vocals 2] [Jan. 3rd, 2008|11:23 pm]

fabricari

OK, looks like everything worked. The new mic has eliminated any excuses I have left for poor vocals. That said, these are probably the most solid vocals I've recorded in a while. Let's say I'm really happy with the purchase of that Snowball USB Mic.

I split up the vocals as separate track in case someone wants to take a crack at the low vocals. I'm thinkin the crackly bowie-esque would sound better than my lounge singer low end.

Cotton Eyed Joe (Final, For Now) [Jan. 3rd, 2008|12:07 am]

fabricari
I know there's more that can be done with it, but for now, I think I wanna move forward. I really like the parts that Grant added. And while the new mic adds a lot of depth, I'm thinkin' this key really isn't the best for me. That or I need more gravel in my throat.

It looks like div share was doin' some database upgrades, explainin' why there were issues before. But just in case: http://fabricari.com/music/Cotton%20Eyed%20Joe.mp3

Are we gonna set up a site on Virb for the final cuts, or what?

Red River Valley- the plien air version [Dec. 30th, 2007|08:45 am]

nvonflue
I figured if I can't add to Grant's musicianship on this song, I'll add around it!  Included is a country evening, a crackling fire and gathering thunderstorm to set the mood:

I moved the music track around a bit to accomodate the opening sounds, I figure if you like it Grant, and want to include it in your final mix, you can decide where best to start the music.

Also, Steve, did you put some banjo to this? Did I miss that?
