"Women En Large is an incredible collection of photographs that portray beautiful, strong, courageous, powerful, elegant, handsome mid- to super-size women. ... The focus on the beauty and power of fat women provides an unforgettable and radical contrast to the ugly images of fat women which pervade our lives. As if that weren't enough, the text discusses fat oppression and fat celebration, health and body size, fat and sexuality, activity and ability, fat and ethnicity and more. This is our book if ever there was one."

Dear MomsRising Member -
Audrey, wearing her veterinarian's lab coat, walked into an examination room where a large, lethargic cat was resting on the metal examination table. As Audrey did her work, another veterinarian was also seeing animals in another room at the same clinic. They worked side by side, doing essentially the same job, and they had nearly identical education and work experience. But there was one big difference: Their pay.

I just joined this community (Hi everyone! Been lurking for a while) to post something I just found, I'm not very savvy on the livejournal thing, I don't know if there's a search function, so if this has been posted before, I'll go hide in the corner.

Well, just go see for yourselves... sometimes it's so ridiculous I can't but believe it's fake. It's purpose is supposedly to "promote feminine beauty". As opposed to the "masuline" and "eunuchoid" looks of high-fashion models. Basically some guy with mommy issues created a site (with blog!) to tell everyone that big boobs are best (and everyone who thinks otherwise must be gay). To prove his point he has done some extensive internet research mostly on NSFW pages (I love the way he generously censored the nude pics leaving very much to the imagination).
Have fun!

I'm not real good at introductions, but here goes.
I'm of average height, 5'5", and slightly above-average weight, 140 - 145 lbs. I'm not entirely positive about my bra size and all, but it ranges somewhere between A and B. I'm not very big chested, and that's always bothered me. Dresses don't seem to lay right on me, and in general, it's always been an area of my body that I am very insecure about. During sex, I never take my shirt off. I know this is rather stupid, but it's something I've lived with my whole life, and I'm hard-pressed to overcome it. I am working on it, though.
I adore the idea of this community, and encourage in others what I should encourage in myself: acceptance. I see beauty in unusual ways and forms, and yet cannot seem to find it in myself. I'm very weight-conscious, but can't seem to lose anything below 140. I think my upper arms are big, my thighs are too wide, and in general, I don't have enough muscle tone. Unfortuantely, exercise is almost out of the question. I have a severe heart condition, permanent tendon damage in both wrists, level 4 tendon damage in my right ankle, and tendonitis in both knees. In addition, I have asthma and I'm photosensitive. It's very difficult for me to do much exercising.
Anyway, I thought this community might help me learn and accept more about myself. So here's hoping I can find some support and gain a better understanding of the woman that I am, and want to be.
I Slouch A Lot
I look forward to reading the posts and opinions in this community!

Hey Realwomen!,
Yet another Wapsi-ite who found this community through Paul Taylor's links. 23, pregnant, 5'6, and I've been big all my life. I was into roller-derby for a while, interested in martial arts, and am by no means the sedentary slob that so many people perceive a big person to be. I still love to skate and plan on teaching the baby how to as well when it's old enough to be hell on wheels. I've been painting and drawing forever, and I love books and music. (I'm addicted to vampire stories...lol.)
Anyway, I just wanted to say hey to all the great women out there who are representing beauty and knowledge, and maybe aren't afraid to get a little pissed off and break this mindset that people have about big girls, skinny girls, or just girls in general.

Has anyone else seen the Closer advert on TV? I'm pretty damn disgusted. Basically, they show a variety of objects, such as a rake and a pelican crossing pole. And then they say 'if you can hide behind any of these, look away NOW. Curves are the new skinny'
....remind me again what we've been saying about encouraging ALL women to love their bodies? Well that just pissed right in the face of THAT.
Imagine if they put an elephant and a bus on screen and said 'if you're as big as any of these, look away NOW'.
Outrage right? Rightly so. So why is it acceptable to bash the skinny girls? Why is it acceptable to bash anyone at all? Two wrongs do NOT make a right.

I just read an article about attractiveness in a psychology journal. Apparently how you view yourself is not only a large factor in how others view you, but your perception of yourself changes every millisecond, without us even realizing it. This made me think, of course, about me.
I think that I'm attractive. And I think that we as women all start out this way very young. Somewhere, we are taught that it is not socially acceptable to see ourselves as beautiful. We are treated poorly for saying that our ass looks in this pair of pants or with those shoes, but we are truly crucified for saying that we are beautiful. The minute a female celebrity says "Yes, I'm gorgeous," people that thought she was a goddess before now line up to point out all her physical faults.
I don't have a large-scale solution for this problem. But I do have a small-scale one. I refuse to allow myself to not be beautiful. I like my butt because it's curvy and comfortable. I like my nose because it defines my bouncy/crazy personality with a glance. I even like my feet because they are ticklish and this seems to draw men in, makes them want to touch me.
I challenge you to join me. Do not fear your "imperfections," and lavish self-attention and the attention of others upon all of you, because you are entirely beautiful.

thanks for posting about Torrid! That and the Della Reese line made me wonder if perhaps we should have a post about fave places to shop for clothes, and why. Maybe this post has already happened, I've not been here long.
But I'll start- I love ThinkGeek, because it's for dorks, and the head of the sales department is a plus-size girl herself, so she's constantly trying to get all the female stuff in pluses that are good quality.
mods, let me know if this type of post is overdone and I'll take it down.

I'm coming up on a break in classes in which I would be able to work on the website that was mentioned in
kookyfaerie's post here.
Whether you'd be willing to contribute or not, what is the general interest level in this idea? The contents of the site would ultimately be up to our users, but here's what we're looking at right now:
+ A directory of links to websites, articles and campaigns that would be of interest to the community. The links would be member-submitted, but would be moderated by myself to weed out duplicate and inappropriate links.
+ Articles, personal stories, etc. written by our members.
+ A photo gallery.
Please let me know what you think. At the moment, I'm a little hesitant to start on the project, as there doesn't seem to be much interest among the members. Maybe you missed the previous post or didn't think your opinion mattered... but, I'd really like to know where we stand on this.

Protect choice in your state!
The worst has happened: South Dakota has banned abortion.
What does the law do? South Dakota’s criminal ban outlaws abortion in almost all cases and does not protect a woman in cases of rape or incest or even when her health is in danger. Doctors who violate the ban could face up to five years in prison.
The law is part of a larger anti-choice strategy to overturn Roe v. Wade altogether. To quote the South Dakota House Speaker Matthew Michels, "I think the stars are aligned." [Los Angeles Times, 2/25/06]
Our opponents may be fired up over this latest victory, but we can’t let them achieve their goal of overturning Roe v. Wade.
Please join us in sending a message to U.S. governors asking them to hold the line on a woman’s right to choose. Fill out your information to the right to send your governor a message today.
