guerilla marketing

Grand Theft Auto, the video game that has drawn so much criticism for allegedly including sexually explicit scenes and for, in general promoting criminal behavior and sexist ideas (read more here) has been engaging in a bit of "guerilla marketing" in New York.

The logo already has a graffiti or tattoo-like flavor…

I’d love to know if the distributors for the game put these up themselves, or if they simply gave them to some young people to stick all over the place.

Putting these stickers on the gritty telephone poles of the city gives the product instant street creed. It’s impossible to hold the company accountable for the stickers, but when I was a teen if I had a cool sticker I didn’t put it on a telephone pole where someone might take it- I don’t think it’s just kids doing this, I’ve seen too many.

Since I find the game pretty sexist, and since I hate it when corporate interests invade street art I decided to take a little guerilla counter action.

Fight fire with fire.

I don’t know if it will have any impact. But it makes me FEEL better.

Much better!

***I just want to add a note to this post: No, I do not want this game banned or anything like that. I’m just angry to see an ad dressed up like street art. Street artists give away art for free—they spend their money and time making art and making the streets a fun exciting place and don’t get a penny in return. These people want you to buy something and I resent having my mental space invaded by advertising when I’m walking around looking for interesting street art. If you want to put up an ad PAY someone for the space like everyone else. Otherwise I will mock you. And other people might too. It’s a jungle out there.

i think video games encourage sexism and violence just as much as marilyn manson can be blamed for school shooting. the problem is not with entertainment, it's with people who get off on being violent/racist/sexist assholes. interestingly enough, during times of our worst prejudices we saw entertainment that depicted an idyllic or idealistic existance. i know plenty of guys who play gta:sa and treat women with the utmost dignity and respect. hell i even enjoyed playing that game and did not, for one second, feel like less of a woman.

at first glance, grand theft auto is nothing more than an excuse for teenage boys to live out thier fantasies of hijacking cars and sleeping with prostitutes. if you dig a little deeper, you'll find a game with a compelling story, characters you become attatched to, a groundbreaking level of content, impressive graphics, and engaging non-linear gameplay (which is hard to pull off).

i object more to 'guerrilla marketing' invading street art than i do the actual game, and for that reason, i think it's funny. banksy said that advertising in public places is like rich people throwing rocks at your head.

I'm with you. I wouldn't have gotten so pissed if they'd bought an ad in a magazine like every other company... I think they are trying to make people think they are "down"

And they are not down... this isn't some crappy local band. It's a huge company.

They are not welcome in my favorite graffiti places.

Street artists work for free? You're a sweetheart but I think you should recall that successful rappers often wind up with their fantastically luxurious "cribs" being covered on MTV. "And this is the second library room..." Street artists are struggling artists, but I think few would turn down a commission.

As for GTA, it's porn, IMHO. Wouldn't let it into a child's hands if I could prevent it. Adults can entertain themselves as they please, but I always find it a bit alarming when it pleases them to kill people recreationally. I liked shooters like Quake and Doom, so I understand the appeal but don't think it's very healthy.

""I gave a good example. Parents buy their kids what they ask for. It's easy to say parents should be responsible for guarding children from this sort of material, but I feel that marketing advances a step in this argument, as children are defined more and more by what games they possess, and what media they own, and what that media informs them of. in a time when the influence we have over our children is protracted *since more and more families have two breadwinners instead of one* this is an important issue. ""

IF their parents have to buy it for them for them to get it, why don't the parents just say no if they don't want them to have it?

""unfortunately, sexism and racism are hard to measure with a meter stick. your observations of the intentions of the left are a little reductive. there are good arguments in this issue, I, for instance am pretty liberal, and this has nothing to do with stroking the red state's cock, trust me.""

Thats almost all I've ever seen in these sort of discussions.

""I do have a problem with how we do not hold the market responsible for what it produces or what it targets. we take an active stance against cigarette marketing and porn marketing, but don't take a stance on the forms of media that influence how kids see the world?""

But who decides what marketing is inappropriate for who?

""Far be it for those who are oppressed or discriminated against to define their discomfort, right? Somehow that doesn't make sense. ""

What doesn't make sense is this comment. Bringing it to attention is one thing, but advocating some kind of action deserves much scrutiny.

""free speech? this argument has come up a lot in this thread. free speech, as an ideal, is infringed upon when the gov't chooses to do so, and also when it could end up being harmful to parties who are privy to it. the argument can be made that a bunch of stereotypes this game pursues could be harmful to those who are the subject of them, as they foster certain ways of looking at the world, IN CHILDREN. ""

The effects of such things are, as I have tried to point out, far from clear. Advocating action based on uncleart evidence is problematic.

"" Last I saw, the Ku Klux Klan hasn't been granted the right to talk to children in schools because they have the right to free speech (notice, similarly, that white supremacy is now fostered underground as markets of *gasp* video games, and music, which are...ding ding ding, forms of media, and often defended....ding ding ding, as free speech).""

A school is a controlled environment and you can't just let anyone speak in a school because it can be taken as government endorsement. See all the church-state arguments on religion in schools over this.

And those things can be defended as free speech, because they fall in to the realm of free speech. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it shouldn't be afforded first amendment protection, or even the usggestion of it.

"" This is not to say it should be prohibited entirely, only that its market should be restricted to those who have ability to discern fantasy from reality.""

Thats a tall order, for the same reason I statde before; Who determines these things?

""this game isn't a statement, it's entertainment, which isn't always an inert part of our culture, and its criticism doesn't mean that it will no longer exist, it only means that it is being criticized for the detriment it may influence in society by influencing the way people view and characterize real life people.""

That criticism is all you should be able to do.

""My stake in this is that my parents, while they believe in the ideals discussed here, do not prohibit their children because they do not want to deal with the discomfort of doing so. ""

Well, if they want to keep it form their kids they need to deal with that discomfort instead of expecting the government to pick up the slack for them.

"" just because they're not cigarettes, doesn't mean we shouldn't question it, and I hope that we do.""

I have no problem with questioning it. I DO have a problem with the suggestion that any sort fo regulation is in order.
