"Deviled" Cucumbers [20 Jul 2009|08:43am]

I've been absent for a little while, due to the lack of a camera - but I'm back.
Hope you all are enjoying you're Summer so far!
Here's a fun and easy recipe that in a (more visual) way reminded me of Deviled Eggs...hence the name. But of course it's egg free...and seriously yummy! And a perfect outdoor picnic/bbq snack!

Help me pick a juicer! [19 Jul 2009|12:17am]

catandfiddle
Hi all,
I've been a member here for a long time but I think this might be my first post. ANYWAY.

I've had several citrus juicers over the years, but as I've incorporated more and more raw foods in my diet I've been jonesing to buy a juicer that can handle not only citrus but also beets, carrots, root vegetables, greens, and of course the ever-popular wheatgrass.

SO. What do you recommend? I don't care how much it costs as long as it will juice EVERYTHING and do a great job. Thank you!

Starting to be raw again. Is this enough? [15 Jul 2009|09:10pm]

iwillcomeagain
I want to know what you all think of my typical meal plan for a day and if there's something I'm missing or something I should be eating more of. Any advice is appreciated :)

Smoothie with orange(juice), 3 bananas, 5 strawberries, kale, spinach, flax, and hemp

Larabar

Large salad with kale, spinach, romaine, broccoli, snap peas, carrots, cucumbers, red peppers, pecans, mung bean sprouts, raisins

Smoothie (with similar if not identical ingredients)

Either another salad or something more elaborate like a dehydrated chickpea/lentil patty with hot sauce in a lettuce wrap

Do you think this is enough food and enough variety for a 5'7 130 lb guy?

vitamin K2 [14 Jul 2009|01:51pm]

glaring_orange
Hi all,

I have a question about vitamin K2... I only discovered that there was such a thing when I bought Shazzie's book Evie's Kitchen (the Vegan Society of UK, for example, say nothing about it on the nutrition section of the website, they only mention 'vitamin K'). Shazzie recommends supplementation (for children especially), because apparently the conversion process of K1 into K2 in human body is not very efficient and otherwise the only vegan sources are some fermented foods like natto (which I had never heard of before).

K2 is said to be important for health (including bone formation) and to work synergistically with vitamins A and D.

What do you think of the importance of this vitamin? Do you include specific fermented foods into your diet or supplement? Do you know of any comprehensive sources of information on K2 with regard to vegan / raw vegan diet I could look at? I'm very keen to be on the safe side with nutrients as I'm expecting a child.

Thanks for your views!

Raw summer squash [09 Jul 2009|10:23am]

screamsosoft
I made some pesto last night and ate it with slices of a small yellow squash. I did eat the whole squash, and I've felt some mild stomach upselt since then (still do now). Pesto hasn't made me feel ill that I recall. I've never tried the raw squash before, and it was really yummy. Is there a raw food guideline against eating raw squash in decent sized quantities?

hey everyone! im new here! I have been vegan on and off for a while now but finally have straightened things out and have been building up to an all raw diet. tomorrow i wanna do all raw and give up my cup of brown rice. i think im ready. just curious if u had any RECIPES that do not include NUT and SEEDs i have a food intolerance to them. luckily i love avocado! I also would prefer no oils cuz i just don't like the way they feel.  The less processed the better for me! Anything more than a blender makes me nervous as well as too many ingredients! ha. if u have any product recommendations too thats great! So hard to find nutless and seedless raw products. now my last question is how u guys feel bout too much fruit or too much fat debates...everyone seems to go crazy bout this stuff! I figure tomorrow I just wont have more than 2 avocados.  I think thats reasonable and I can go down I guess eventually.  Thanks!

Everyone in my family is a big meat eater and while I'm home from college I have no choice but to eat my mom's cooking, so I pick the meat out of my food and then eat it... I know it probably isn't great that meat is touching all my food but my mom's already insulted that I'm turning away some of her cooking so I can't refuse it entirely.

Now she's attacking me for doing this and telling me why I need meat, and one thing she said was that people who don't eat meat have a lower bone density than people who do. I don't know much about the benefits of eating or not eating meat, so I was wondering if you know any information about that, along with what foods replace meat, or books/websites I can check out.

Thanks!

I made some raw cupcakes! The picture is not the best but i was impatient to eat them!

So at left on top it's a choco-almond cupcake with plum icing, and at right it's a matcha green tea cupcake with clementine icing.
On the second row, at left it's a lemon cupcake with a ginger icing and at right it's a spicy cupcake with a vanilla icing.
Ingredients here! )

Hi,

I love wheatgrass juice and I'd love to be able to make some at home (not to mention all other sorts of green juices.) I have noticed there is a Lexen Juicer for sale here locally. It is a manual machine and only costs 59.99. It is designed for juicing greens.

What has given me pause is Nomi Shannon, author of The Raw Gourmet. She advises in her chapter of supplies that a manual wheatgrass juicer is too onerous to use and that one should really spring for an electric one.

So, has anyone used a manual wheatgrass juicer here - Lexen or another brand? If so, was it viable?

Thanks for any info.

When you guys make kale chips in your dehyrdator, do you coat them with olive oil/season them before hand, or afterwards?

Advice please [24 Jun 2009|09:27pm]
fxdupprincess
I just applied to work at a food cooperative in town. I am hoping that they will hire me, but find out doubting that they will, because I am about to get a degree, and I may end up getting a degreed job, which they certainly can't offer me. But I would like to offer to help them out. Their store is too tiny, and boxes are stacked upon boxes on the top shelf. It's hard to get through if there are enough people in there. They argue about the rent sometimes, and I just feel that they could use some more organization in general. The guy who buys the produce goes to other stores, and buys it full price, and then marks it up at their store, so all of the produce is extremely expensive. I want to encourage this guy to go into local politics or something, because he has a lot of problems (obviously), which shouldn't be at the co-op, but at the same time, I don't want him to be pushed out the door, and it's not my place to say. The co-op has three generations of women in a particular family working there, and I feel like the granddaughter really needs to move on, because she feels so bad about living at home. These people seem sad, and maybe disorganized, and I wish there was more life in the co-op.
Obviously, I care about providing people with the option to buy healthy, organic, vegan, raw, and specialty foods, hygiene products, and supplements. I've spent a lot of money at the store, I'm a member, and I volunteer there, although I usually only stay an hour or so. Obviously it's not the perfect job.
Okay so here are my questions...
1.) What do you think I can do to improve my chances of getting hired (I haven't been interviewed yet)?
2.) Do you think I should scrap the whole idea and not get mixed in with this dysfunctional family?
3.) Do you have any other job ideas for stuff I should look into? (I'm graduating with majors in sociology and biology.)

Body clock changes [23 Jun 2009|06:27pm]

dalbino83
I've been raw for a little over a month, and I've noticed my body clock seems to be changing. I've always been a night owl, and now all of a sudden, I'm finding myself getting tired and wanting to go to bed at 10 or 11pm, and feeling awake at 6am! This has never been true for me in my life ... but can it really be due to going raw??

Does somebody practice mono eating? (Without mixing stuff: one meal - one product). And does somebody practice raw eating witout any cooking (blender, dehyrdator etc)?
And what do you think about such a way of eating?

I became a vegetarian when i was eleven years old because I didn't want to eat bambi when my mom made chili with deer meat. I became vegan when I was nineteen because there was gelatin in mini wheats after i had already eaten them. I'm now twenty two and i woke up two weeks ago and decided to become a raw vegan. I know it won't be that hard once i get used to it but its been rather difficult thus far. The diet is not too hard to adjust to, its the social aspects of a raw lifestyle. Going out to eat is really rediculous. The only items on any menu is a salad w/o dressing and if you are lucky a fruit plate. I went on vacation with my boyfriend and two friends. They are all really cool and they were looking for a vegan restaurant. I felt snooty having to tell them that I wouldn't eat anything there either. I guess I'll just get used to not ever going out to eat and i'm really going to have to learn how to cook raw food. I bought a blender and a food processor and a raw cook book. I think I might end up being mostly juicarian because its a lot easier to make juice than it is to make a raw meal. I'm feeling discouraged towards this lifestyle but I want to push through, and I will. Does anyone have any words for boosting confidence? Does anyone know any raw informational websites or documentaries?

hello ! [16 Jun 2009|11:07pm]

i am new this community... im going to be trying an all raw diet starting next week. i dont know how long i will do it for... i just really want to see how my body reacts and how i feel, but i hope to go at least a month.

before i start, however i want to prepare myself. im trying to think of fun tasty things i can eat, other than just simple salads and fruits.

i was wondering, is natural air- popped popcorn ( nothing added ) considered part of an all raw diet?

and also, which grocery store is a good one to go to, to get raw foods, such as jellys, and hummus, maybe salad dressings, etc. ?
i live in southern california. we have trader joes and henry's here as well as fresh and easy... but to spare me from going from place to place, does anyone have any stores they recommend?

thanks in advance.
