Vet Name: Dr. Dinwittie
Clinic's Name: Park Lane Animal Hospitsl
Address: 24 Park Lane Rd New Milford, CT 06776
Phone Number: 860-350-4937
Hours of Operation: Typical, and always an on-call doctor.

No one ever lives anywhere near me, but the two doctors who work at this animal hospital are the only two for miles around - and even with like 100 other animal hospitals around here - that treat my little ratties, and I have had nothing but wonderful experiences with them. They always treated Teagan & Daemon like they were any other cute little cat or fluffy dog (unlike most people), tried as hard as they could (extra coupons, discounts, etc.) to keep the costs down for me when Teagan had a skin infection had Daemon was plagued in an awful way with mites (poor guys, that's what you get when you buy from pet stores). Both have passed away since, but they really are wonderful vets if you're ever in the area (:

Vet(s) name: There are several small animal/exotics vet on staff that are very rodent-friendly. Dr. Maxwell is the head vet (I think) but generally if you let them know the issue/animal they will make sure you get the best vet for the job.
Clinic's name: Dogwood Pet Hospital
Clinic's address: 4102 N Mulford Rd, Loves Park, IL 61111
Clinic's phone number (include area code): (815) 282-3371‎
Hours of operation during the week/weekends: 9am-6pm M-F, I think they close early on Saturdays but I can't find my magnet!

Of all the vets within 30 minutes of me, this office has consistently been the best as far as pricing/experiences go. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly, and is great with many types of exotics. The head vet is experienced in small animal surgery as well. Sometimes the office visit fees are about $10-15 more then other vets in the Rockford area, but it's far worth it considering their experience. (Usually their med prices are better, too!) They're often willing to work with you on pricing/payments once you are an established customer.

Vet(s) name: Dr. Anita Kuhnle
Clinic's name: Arlington Heights Animal Hospital
Clinic's address: 412 West Algonquin Road • Arlington Heights • Illinois • 60005-4410
Clinic's phone number (include area code): 847•593•1898
Hours of operation during the week/weekends: Open 7 days a week by appointment.

I have not yet personally used them (She is located about 2 hours from me.), but have heard nothing but positive things from the local rat community about them. For rat neuters they charge $45-55. They do tumor removals starting at about $75 (depending on the case.) and they are fabulous to work with. From what I've heard, there is not a better vet in the area. They also have emergency centers.

Hours of operation during the week/weekends: Monday - Sat, with on call shared with other vets in the area.

I've had nothing but good experiences with Dr. Slack with both rats and dogs. He has a unique personality but I quite like him. He is an exotics vet and is both knowledgeable and compassionate.

I love Colson and Noelle!!! They have both owned rats and adore mine. One of my babies suffers from reoccurring tumors, so Colson gave me a discount the last time I took her in. She charges an average of $50 for the surgery and I've never been charged for an office visit.

Vet(s) name: Dr. Marsh (although anyone I've seen at the clinic is good)

Hours of operation during the week/weekends: Monday through Friday 8am-7pm, Saturday 8am-3pm, Sunday 10am-3pm

Appointment fee is I think $40. Tumor removal is about 100-150 for your run-of-the mill tumor. There's a lot of turnover with the office staff, so they tend to be, er, overwhelmed, but the vets are great there.

Agreed!!!! Animal Kingdom is one of the best to see rats! I usually see Dr. Marsh or Dr. Weinrick who are both extremely knowledgeable on rats! The office staff is really nice.

Appointment fee is between $40 & $42, unless they prescribe medication which ranges between $5-$15. =)

Vet(s) name: Dr. Jennifer Hynes
Clinic's name: Cherry Hill Animal Clinic

Hours of operation during the week/weekends:

Saturday: 8:30AM - 1:00PM
Sunday: Closed

Exam fee is $36 or $50-something for an extended exam, surgeries run around $100-200. Overall costs are generally quite reasonable. Dr. Hynes is the only exotics vet there, and the office staff can be hit or miss as far as their.. er.. politeness, but Dr. Hynes is very knowledgeable.

I also second the recommendation of Dr. Marsh at Animal Kingdom.

Vet(s) name: Dr. Taylor
Clinic's name: Taylor Veterinary Hospital
Clinic's address: 315 State Street, Cedar Falls, IA 50613
Clinic's phone number (include area code): (319)277-1883
Hours of operation during the week/weekends: Monday-Wednesday 8:30am-5:30pm, Thursday 8:30am-5:00pm, Friday 8:30-5:30, Saturday 8:30-10:00

I forget what the rat examination fee is, but I believe it's around $30.

During off hours, there is always a vet on call. Off the top of my head, I don't remember the names of all of the vets that work there, but if Dr. Taylor isn't the one on call, Dr. Smith is pretty capable of handling rats and dealing with any emergency situations. If for nothing else than to get it by until Dr. Taylor can deal with it.

Dr. Taylor is simply the greatest vet I have ever experienced and I truly believe I'll be hard pressed to find anybody who ever matches his caring, sensitivity and expertise ever again. Dr. Smith comes in a very close second, but he definitely excels with dogs and cats.

I've had great experiences with both Dr. Wetzel and Dr. Kaufman. Price for an exam usually runs between $40-$50. Tumor removal will probably run $300-$500 (probably just due to the location of the clinic, i.e. outside of Los Angeles). Never had any issues with the staff; I usually find them quite pleasant to deal with. If you're having financial difficulties, they might be willing to offer some discounts here and there as well.

Vet(s) name: Dr. Sarah Wolfe
Clinic's name: Animal Hospital of DePere
Clinic's address:
703 N 9th St
De Pere, WI 54115
Clinic's phone number (include area code): (920) 336-5774
Hours of operation during the week/weekends: She switches hours around because she travels a lot. She is usually available on Tues. and Thurs. from 12-4, but she is willing to work around her patients quite a bit and will give her cell phone number to her clients as well.

I love this vet. She is knowledgeable, understanding, compassionate, and genuinely loves animals. She charges next to nothing for her services and most medication is at cost. The downside is that she is not always available and sometimes my rats end up at other vets because of this.

And so...

Vet(s) name: Dr. Mandy Ruffing
Clinic's name: Riverside Animal Hospital
Clinic's address:
3233 Riverside Dr.
Green Bay, WI 54301
Clinic's phone number (include area code): 920-336-5090
Hours of operation during the week/weekends: Mon-Fri 8-6 and Sat 8-12

All of the vets at this clinic will see vets, and Dr. Ruffing isn't as experienced as the others, but her willingness to pursue an answer/dianosis and her love of my rats puts her above the others for me. If she is unsure of how to proceed she consults with the other veterinarians at the office. I actually like her so much that I now bring my other animals to her as well. Also, she will discount for return trips and for multiple animals.

Vet(s) name: Dr. Aili Heintz and Dr. Nasal
Clinic's name: Happy Tails
Clinic's address:
1460 Swan Road
De Pere, WI 54115
Clinic's phone number (include area code): 920-336-9595
Hours of operation during the week/weekends:
Monday 8-8
Tues-Fri 8-5
Sat 8-12

Dr. Nasal helped me out a lot with my hedgehog. Dr. Nasal and Dr. Heintz have both had a hand in helping one of my rats overcome pneumonia, but I would recommend Dr. Wolfe and Dr. Ruffing over them due to their limited experience.

I'm a little biased, 'cause I work here (hint: I'm the one shoving my face in your rat's belly and blowing raspberries). ;) Dr. Daryl has the most experience with exotics, but all the vets listed have experience with and will treat rats and other exotics. We offer laser surgery (with isoflurane or sevoflurane anesthetic gas), radiographs (x-rays), medicine compounding, and boarding for all small animals. Saturdays are the busiest appointment days, so if you can schedule during the week, I recommend it! We are definitely not the least expensive hospital out there, so if you have financial concerns ask for an estimate.

I've only been here once, and it was about 4 years ago. I was happy with the care my rats received. They offer alternative/herbal/holistic medicine as well as conventional medicine -- but don't be afraid to ask for antibiotics if you want them! They have experience with rat surgery as well, though I have no personal experience with that (never needed it for my rats). Everyone I met there was very nice and pro-rat.

*He is really good for minor things such as respiratory infections, parasites, spaying/neutering, and tumor removal. I question whether he is good with tougher situations such as pituitary tumors.

Appt. Fee: $27, Tumor Removal: $120-$152, Spaying: $140 (I don't know about neutering but he has successfully neutered rats (3 of them were 2 of the vet techs' rats), He uses Amoxicillin (Clavomox) first for respiratory infections (alwasy has worked for me) and it usually costs me $25 for meds. He uses Ivermectin first for mites/lice and it cost $10 for a small tube. (He will give baytril and doxy if Clavomox doesn't work and while ivermectin hasn't failed me yet, I'm sure he would use Revolution next because he knows about that type treatment.)

Vet(s) name: There is two of them (can't remember their names)

I would recommend going to them for mor serious problems like pituitarty tumors and cancer since they will work closely with UC Davis (Well known vet school)

If there is an emergency when there are no appointments available they will let you drop off your rattie in the morning, take care of them between appointments, and pick them up when they are done or when you get out of work.

Dr. Lisa has been wonderful with my elderly rat Lily. I also like that they are open late evenings and weekends, as sometimes my work schedule doesn't permit standard business hours. They've also been great about cost, charging me only for meds or a recheck when I bring Lily in. I do not recommend Dr. Michelle (she told me I should separate Lily from her cagemates because they would attack her for being old and slow).

I am just adding some info about the second clinic on the list as I used to work there!

Vet(s) name: Dr. Shannon Thomas, Dr. Amy Wells, Dr. Hilary Stern
Clinic's name: Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic of the Monterey Peninsula
Clinic's address: 20 Lower Ragsdale Dr, Monterey, CA 93940
Clinic's phone number (include area code): 831-647-1147
Hours of operation during the week/weekends: # M-F 8am-6pm with surgery period between 1-3pm (no appointments but available for drop offs and pick ups for boarding and food purchases), Saturday 8am-12pm
Website: http://www.aecvets.com/
Fees: $45 for a regular exam for up to 2 animals, $65 for 3-4 animals, %80 for 5-6 animals. (Personally, I think this is great because rat owners should have multiple animals and you can get them all checked out more cheaply instead of paying $45 for each pet.) Neuters are about $200 (including exam and meds), spays are $250-$300 (including exam and meds), tumor removals range from $150 to $400 depending on how complicated the surgery is, and they tend to drain abscesses as part of the exam fee. They also board rats and do combos fees if they are in the same cage while boarding. Also, for already established clients in good standing, the office manager Melissa will sometimes allow you to do a payment plan if you leave post-dated checks and it was an emergency i.e. not a routine annual thing you could have foreseen.

Just a note about rat euthanasia - when I used to work there it was explained to me that we had a few incidences of allowing parents to be present and them trying to interrupt the procedure physically or interfere with the doctor. I think one client even got stuck with a needle attached to a syringe full of euthanasia solution after having a sudden hysterical breakdown and change of heart and then threatened legal action after sticking her hand in the way causing the poke to happen. Also, we find it easier for the injection to happen under anesthesia when ratties are already asleep as euthanasia solution is typically injected intravenously (and since ratties have such small vessels they do the injection right into the heart) and the anesthesia cart cannot be wheeled into the exam rooms. Due to legal privacy issues, we can't let people in the treatment room where the anesthesia cart is because it is an open room with many other animals in cages and some clients don't want other non-staff members seeing their sick pets and/or possibly harming them by wandering where they shouldn't be.

However, if asked, the vets will inject euthanasia solution subcutaneously (under the skin) in the back room and then bring your rattie back to you in the exam room. Instead of being instant as with an intravenous injection, the euthanasia process will take awhile as the solution is absorbed into the blood stream. It is like passing off into a coma/deep sleep and then they can pass in the room with you.

Another recommendation:

I did forget about bringing in multiple pets for the same cost--I liked that as well. That makes sense about the euthnasia. It also explains why they kept apologizing for charging me after I put my rat to sleep (I had to wonder what kind of pet owners they got who didn't want to pay for a euthanasia). I do remember, though, that they told me they put them under before euthanasia, and they were wonderful about giving me as much time as I needed to say goodbye.

Office visit it around $40, neuter is around $170 for cats and rats ;). Tumor removal varies from about $100-$200. She only uses sevo on rats so price is greatly influenced by the weight of the animal and length of surgery. Wonderful for euthanisia as well. You can pay beforehand and leave through a side door if you wish.

Dr. Burks and Tysiak are the most rat-knowledgeable vets in the practice. They've both gone out of their way to treat my rats, and won't hesitate to do their own research if there's something they don't know. They're also very willing to work with me and let us bounce ideas and treatment plans off each other to find the best courses of action. (I've had ratties with medical conditions that required more than standard treatment.) I feel like they treat me more like a colleague than a customer sometimes, which I really appreciate. They've both operated on my rats multiple times, for tumor removals including one exploratory surgery, and spays.

Standard visit is $46, if I recall correctly, and the office's multiple pet charge will bump it up to around $60 for any more than one. Tumor removals have cost me a little over $100 each, with the most expensive being a little under $200. Everyone at the office is always very friendly towards my rats, as well.

I've tried a few vets in town, but always felt rushed... as if the people didn't care. :C

Buuut... I've had only good experiences here. They really seem to care about the lil critters. <3

Vet(s) name: They have several vets, I forget the ones I actually talked to. ( I haven't actually had rats for a while now. :C )
Clinic's name: Pyramid Veterinary Hospital
Clinic's address: 2405 Pyramid Way, Sparks, NV 89436
Clinic's phone number: 775-356-8323
Hours of operation during the week/weekends: Monday though Friday: 7:30am to 5:30pm - Saturday: 9:00am to 3:00pm - Sunday: Closed

I brought in 4 rats at once one time and they charged me for only seeing one, which was nice. Also they prescribed the medication to just the one rat, but gave me proper dosages for everyone else just to keep the bill low. I think the most expensive bill from that place I saw was for my old roommate's rat, $200ish, for surgery (a broken toe removal~). The bill included the pain killers and all that good stuff.

I see others are including cost info. I don't know offhand, but I think the office visit itself is in the $30-40 range. I usually come out with a total bill of about $100 for a single rat with respiratory illness, surgery has been $200 (tail tip amputation) to $350 (large tumor removal) including the drugs and everything., and euthanasia is about $50.

They're pricey, but I love this vet. They really know their stuff, specialize in small animals, and come recommended by everyone I know who has seen them.

Large veterinary clinic in North Portland. Both Dr. Weinstein and Dr. Barnes are professional and caring. Dr. Barnes especially seems to have good working knowledge of rats; Dr. Weinstein is a well-rounded exotics vet as well.

Clinic's name: Clarkson Wilson Vet Clinic

Clinic's phone number (include area code): (636) 530-1808

They see all sorts of exotics: our degus have been seen as well as the rats, bunny, and dogs. They also see birds and reptiles. The down side is that an exam is 54 plus the added cost of medication if needed.

Clinic's name: Northwest Plaza Animal Hospital
Clinic's address: 1661 W. Northwest Highway, Grapevine, TX 76051
Clinic's phone number (include area code): 817.481.7943
Hours of operation during the week/weekends: Pretty standard. He is not in the clinic on Thursdays.

Does not do surgery, but is good for all else. He is gentle and caring, and if he doesn't know, he'll research and call you back right away. Even in their extremities, I've never had a rat bite him, and that's saying something. Also, reasonably priced. An office visit for a rat is only $35 at this time.

Great vet. Has dealt with a variety of things with my (and Mandy's) kiddos. Familiar with URI, PT, CHF, tumors, neuters, surgeries... hasn't done spays but Dr. Jennrich at the clinic has done many. Really great bedside manner and willing to listed to owner suggestions for treatment. Loves rats. :)

They do have emergency services for regular clients. We've been going to this vet for several years now and they have always been professional, caring, and seemingly personally invested in the health and well-being of the animals they serve. They don't mention anything about rats on their website, unfortunately, but I've never felt that their care or concern was lacking towards my ratties. The prices are reasonable, even for surgeries, and they explain everything up front without talking down to the clients. I'm so glad I found them. Highly recommended!

This is, as far as I know, the only emergency clinic near Dallas that sees exotics. Caveat: Rat experience varies according to the vet on staff at the time!
