thinking about law
In my Humanities class, we were discussing the ideals of the social contract. The teacher brought up the concept of speeding. And much to his chagrin, the first student he asked of course admitted to speeding. But what came to my mind is that very few people even view speeding as something wrong. An inconvenience if caught, yes; but wrong? The problem as I see it is that the law is not maintained for public safety, it is being maintained as a income device for government. If safety were really the issue, the lawmakers would mandate car manufacturers to design and build cars that could not exceed legal maximum limits. Instead we have a police force that primarily enforces the speed limit. One might get the impression that the government does not really care.
