    Phones and breakups
So my new phone was whatever they would give me for a free upgrade, so it has some random features that I wouldn't have picked. But one thing At & T now offers is something called "call protect" which is a service you subscribe to which keeps you from dialing a predetermined number.

I have had at least one break up where I could have saved myself some grief with that option! Brilliant!

    Yes, you can...
order Almost Pretty online now. It's available through CDbaby.

I know the initial batch is almost sold out, so if you get the message that they are all out, try again in a few days because we just shipped them another box. But as of right this second, they have copies.

I went to see Billie Jean King...

...read at the Columbus Circle (do we have to call it that? really?) Borders and she STARTED by talking about nutrisystems. Also, what had been advertised as a reading was a q and a, which meant the crowd that showed up (which was a drastically different than what I had anticipated) controlled the agenda.

I don't mind, really, going to a stinker of an event once in a while, because I feel like, law of averages-wise, if you don't occasionally go to a bad event, maybe you've been deciding against good ones too. But I am certainly grateful it was free and short!

I'm hesitant to trash talk an icon though...especially since I came of age in years directly following the passage of Title IX. I know playing sports in high school and college (did you all know I played volleyball for Mid America Bible College? It's true!) helped me stay confident in/with my body in all its myriad of sizes. But sheesh, why undo all that good work in your older years by touting nutrisystems? Ulgh. It's one thing to make a personal decision, it's another to publicly endorse, nay, push it.  And she definitely was. "I'm working with the nutrisystems, it's really great for me" was the answer to the first unrelated question!

Anyway, when I start using "nay" in a livejournal post it's a clear indication that it's time to end said LJ post. Leaving tomorrow for Madison Wisconsin, so if there's anyone on my friendslist in Wisconsin (is there? is there?) who wants to make a trip to Lacrosse Wisconsin, you can come see me at LACROSSE PRIDE.

I haven't been back to Wisconsin since I was 15. This ought to be interesting.

On the way out of the Borders, the sun was setting across the fountains...

Nancy Drew and the Mysterious Icebox Contents
I brought a lot of food back from the family reunion, my mom sent me back with all her leftovers.

Which means we now have a refrigerator full of food labeled, in bright red sharpie,  "grandma."

I like to keep my room-mates guessing about how I identify.

Torch Lake Observation (1 in probably a long winded series)
My sis and I went to visit my  She is 87 and on NO medications. She broke her pelvis and can't walk perfectly, so she's in assisted living for now but is otherwise super healthy and complained about the "old people" who were living there. No female in the past generation on either my dad or my mom's side has died before 93. The same cannot be said for the men but the smoking and drinking haven't helped with that.

This means if I don't get attacked by a tiger while visiting the Bronx zoo, or hit by a snowmobile (to offer two rather disparate scenarios) I am anecdotally, if not statistically, likely to spend at least another 53 years on the planet.

Which means I need to either take up drinking/smoking or start saving more for retirement.

And the end of our Torch Lake vacation....
..most everyone in the family was starting that "oh man, we have to go back to work soon" chorus.

I was starting to grumble along and then I remembered "oh, I LOVE my job!"*

    Tee hee.

Remind me of that when I am stranded in the Atlanta airport after storms delay my flight to Gayslam, Alabama.

In other news, the cabin we stayed in had one of those singing fish. Not a real fish, a fake one. You know, as seen on TV. Now the "Don't Worry, Be Happy" song (sung fishie style) is stuck in my head. Not a bad thing, all in all.

The decor of our cabin was very interesting. I think it could have been from the early No Buying Impulse Control Era.

Close Up of The Raccoon Who Apparently Wants a Tip

Um, if polar bears are as far south as Michigan, what does that say about global warming?

And I didn't even get photos of the bear mouth toilet paper holders and moosehead lamps!
It was an amazing place, we slept 19 in the main cabin alone and cooked for 55 at dinner at one point.
I'm not even sure how many kids were there. At some point, with all the little blonde kids running around, I thought I was in Swedish daycare.

    The view from the cabin:

    Rough, I know.

And I'm sorry, but I just couldn't bring myself to put the picture of the Raccoon Who Wants a Tip under an LJ cut. If it's NWS for you, should totally quit your job because they TARFW (Too Anal Retentive For Words).

This post brought to you by the friendly folks at Make Fun Of Your Vacation House On-line But Not Too Much Because You Really Want Your Family To Be Able to Go There Again. Inc.

    * Please note, I don't know that all my family members hate their jobs. I am just saying they weren't looking forward to going back.

I'm amazed the Portland ice cream trucks don't server beer. Though thinking about it, I'm not sure if I want to get beer from a pedophille.

A Mundane Account of Routine Things

    Bike Shops
Bike shops are kind of like comic book shops, only the snotty workers and clients are really really buff.

I over inflated my back tire this weekend and ended up getting a "pinch flat" when I went over some train tracks. In plain english, that means the tire popped because there was too much air in it without enough give.

I stared at the quick release (easy) and the gears (scary) and a few internet videos (all of which changed the front tire), said fuck it, and brought it to a bike shop. Thirteen bucks later I'm good to go.

I'd love to learn how to take care of my own bike better, but I'll be fucked if I'm spending an afternoon struggling with something the shop can do in five minutes.

    Clack Go the Gears
I spent the past week mulling over a close-in SE condo purchase, ultimately deciding against it. Maybe in a year after I have more money squirreled away for a down payment and have carved out a niche I can live with at work. I could afford my own place now, but it would tie me a lot closer to this job than I'm comfortable with. That, in turn, would have made the job all the more unbearable. Vicious Cycle Boom.

I've been watching the Deadwood DVDs and the "Making of" of features got some rusty gears in my head turning. It was Watching David Milch (Executive Producer/Head Writer) work with his cast. He exerts his will over the performers and forces them into situations they're not comfortable with. This seems to be the pattern wherever great things are made; A personality that dominates everyone else and forces them into doing things they never would have otherwise.

Which leads to the theme of my "career". I hate doing things half assed. I don't like subjecting my personality to the will of other people. I'm not comfortable exerting my will over other people, or trusting them not to fuck something up.

This has led to a decade of frustration.

So we'll see where this latest full-time gig leads. There are worse things than being unhappily employed during a recession.
