From the U-M SOAD Distinguished Visitors Series press release: "On the day before the international exhibition Shrinking Cities, opens at both MOCAD and Cranbrook, a panel of creative practitioners discuss art in Detroit and the Shrinking Cities project, moderated by Detroit artist and MOCAD curator, Mitch Cope. Shrinking Cities was initiated in 2002, when Germany's Federal Cultural Foundation, the Kulturstiftung des Bundes, commissioned teams in Detroit (USA), Manchester/Liverpool (Britain), Ivanovo (Russia), and Halle/Leipzig (Germany) to investigate and document why and how these urban areas were shrinking in population and business. In the resulting exhibition, artists, architects, filmmakers, journalists, culture experts, and sociologists reveal and illuminate the changing
realities of these cities, toward developing better approaches to contemporary urban issues."

The Detoit Temple of the American Dream
The Detroit Temple of the American Dream I posted yesterday about the Temple of the American Dream project. For those of you who are not on the main MI_BM list here is a little bit about it. A large part of the Michigan Burning Man Community is taking part in creating a Temple to the American Dream in Detroit. This project is in collaborating with David Best, The Black Rock Arts Foundation, Detroit Blight Busters as well as other Burners from around the country. The Detroit Dream Project hopes to complete the temple in May 2007. We land, storage, a planning board, nation wide support, David Best designing the Temple and brining out his crew to help us build it. Here is what we need: * Steel! If you have leads on sources for donated steel, let us know! All grades are welcome, and if there is a large enough amount we could travel to get it. Donations will be tax deductible. * Volunteers! If you would like to become in any aspect of this project, from grant writing and welding to baking cup cakes to feed workers and local school children, we would love your involvement. Kurt (kurt(at)braindancestudios.com) can get you on the Detroit Dream Project planning website. * Donations! Right now we are trying to reach $5,000 in pledges over the next several weeks. We plan to take this amount to show corporations and grant agencies that we have early support behind us. Thank you, ~Thaddeus I'm working on writing up grant blurbs today as part of the search for funding to build our crazy little temple with David Best here in Detroit. I just watched this video about Blight Busters featuring John George and Chazz (their resident artist and future burner) for the third or so time. I heard a few phrases that made me realize that Michigan Burners, this project and Blight Busters are a pretty darn good fit. I'm really happy we're building both a temple on their property and potentially a great long term collaboration. Some of the stuff I heard from the video that sounded like burners to me -- We're about stabalizing and revitalizing. We want to heal this community and bring people together. You've got to be crazy to believe you can do this, especially here. When you decide you're going to do it you find a way to do it. The resources come in. The Quixotic Project is on hold this year, but . . .
The Quixotic Project is on Hold this Year, but . . . Originally, the Quixotic Project was going to: * Put a call out for projects to help write grants for and back with fundraisers. The best contender so far was Evol and Makk's Emerald City idea (I'm still cringing at having to postpone it!) * Change our structure to become more inclusive and democratic. * Throw a fundraiser like Theatre Noir called "IT CAME FROM PLANET B!!!" A retro 50's space themed party at Theatre Bizarre. This has the backing for both Ken and John (the creator of TB). This idea will be back! However, for several reasons, we have decided to put all this on hold. The main reason is so that it gives everyone a chance to focus 100% on the Temple of the American Dream without distractions, and then recover afterwards! The Temple is an amazing concept, and is a rare opportunity to work side by side with David Best, his crew, the Black Rock Arts Foundation, the Flaming Lotus Girls, Blight Busters and all the other Burners that are likely to come in to help from across the Midwest, and the rest of the country. If you haven't been to a meeting yet, come out just once and you will be hooked! Still, if you have an small Art Instillation idea for Burning Man 2007 and would like help writing the grant, get in touch. If it is something Quixoticy we can put it out on the list, help you write the grant, and get you so backing out on the playa. Modest ideas only please! Quixotic Rocks at Clean Up!

Announcing Theatre Noir
Get out your calendars kiddies, we have a date for Detroit’s big Burning Man style party and it’s going to be at Theatre Bizarre. www.theatrebizarre.com/photos/ We are looking at July 22nd as the date to host the Shadow Chamber Fundraiser. The theme? How do you take something designed for Halloween, add Burners and move it into July? How does this sound? . . . A Film Noir set in an abandoned broken down carnival, that isn’t so abandoned. Film Noir is style, danger, tension, and sex. The stark lighting, black and white the tension of opposites fits beautifully with the concept of the Shadow Chamber project. And Theatre Bizarre is the ultimate broken down carnival. Costumes are encouraged! So if Carney is your thing - perfect, if you like a fine cut suit and a fedora worn with a tilt -excellent, and if you’re a woman who likes to wear garters and stockings with a seam up the back of the leg . . . well, that could be worth all the effort for the party right there. . . Think carnival, think hardboiled pulp fiction, think 1950’s, think high class, think red light, think Dashiell Hammett, think David Lynch, think Scooby Do (I can’t believe it! It was old man Smithers all along!) . . . and a range from seedy to classy; from tongue in cheek to elegant and sleek. Theatre Bizarre has drawn crowds of 1,800 people in a night. We are going to cap attendance at 500 to keep the vibe right. There will be a pre-publicity window to purchase lower price tickets for friends of the Shadow Chamber project. Next year's project: The Shadow Chamber
Still on a buzz from the windmills, Jeremy and I unveiled our plans for next years Burning Man instillation at the Detroit Decompression Party last night. The Quixotic Team Presents:
The Shadow Chamber
An Instillation Project for Burning Man 2006 Imaging a coming upon a 16’ cube in the deep desert at night. It has a shifting glow coming from inside it’s ornately cut walls. Flickering light is playing off the outside walls of this chamber from the spinning miniature cube lanterns that surround it is such a way that the wall of the chamber appear to shift on their own. As you walk around this structure you notice a triangular shaft stretching away from one of the walls that has a door made out of heavy black cloth. You enter this hallway and pass through it into the inside of the chamber. Inside of the middle of this room is another spinning cube. This carved box is the only light source and as is spins it casts twisting shadows all around you onto smooth blank walls painted only with the alternating darkness and light from the spinning box. Music from gently turning chimes and unseen speakers are the only noise you can hear. You take a seat and watch the shadows live out their lives on the walls around you. ( More complex Shadow Machines and the Burning of the Chamber . . . )We had fun last night burning a crude but effective 5'x5' prototype of the Chamber over the bonfire. Using flares to project crisp and vivid shadows worked perfectly and when the cube finally aught fire while spinning it looked wonderful. In addition of the prototype of the Chamber we had a working model of the shadow box that spins the shadows inside the Chamber. This also worked great and even in it's simple form created surprisingly strange and hypnotic effects on the white walls of the tents. I'm excited to get started on the real thing! | 1:07 am

This weekends after Burning Man Shindig
Our Burning Man Decomp Party was wonderful. With no advertising it was nearly as large as Quixotica was this summer, about 150 people compared to 180. With 5 dj’s, the fire spinning, Chaos’ Burlesque Shows, our burning of the prototype Shadow Box, ![[info]](http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif) cyfar’s Flame thrower, Videogasm, Camp Happy Hour, Our Shadow Box tent and display, Gavin’s light show, movies and projections in the dojo, the chill room and the Black Plague Bus (w/ Jacuzzi) this was a huge change from last years party which was Fire Spinning, huge bar care of Ubercarny, and 50 cool people sitting around a campfire. Of course what really makes these events is the people. My regret is between working on the Shadow Box and my nasty blood sugar crash I didn’t get a chance to really hang out with people until about 2 am. My apologies to faya99, lmfdevilwoman and nicinevin who left before I was really free to hang out. It was great to meet evillittleblue newly from Toledo by way of Cali (who’s shoulder I hope is doing much better)! Rox and I were lucky enough to have travelingstar come out from Chi-town to crash with us. Her energy is always and inspiration and her fire spinning and hooping last night was some of the best I’ve seen. If you happen to be in Vegas this Halloween she’s co-producing an insane party this Halloween. It’s almost enough to tempt me away from my studies . . . if we can’t make it out, at least there’s the Chicago decomp Nov 12. chassy was in from NCY. We also had a good number of people out Toledo. The word is we have a really solid community out here in Detroit, and from everything I can tell it just keeps getting bigger and stronger. People were coming up to me all night with the projects they want to take out to Burning Man this year. We are very close to having our Non-profit, SPARC, up and running. SPARC is a way of solidifying what we are doing out here, building grant money and resources form both Burning Man and local projects, throwing events and parties, co-op artist space, performance space, event and party venues and so on. I really excited to be part of all of this, the energy in Detroit and throughout the whole Chicago to Toronto corridor keeps getting better and better.
