Just a quick mod post to update on spoiler warnings. This is just to say that Season 4 is no longer considered spoilery.

However, anything beyond the latest season to air on the BBC will be considered a spoiler. This includes references to the 2008 Christmas Special, and anything else post-Season 4 (including the upcoming 2009 specials).

Ever/Was  is a compilation of stories (and a great video!) that is a "virtual season" set during and after the events of Season 4 Episode 13 (Journey's End). There are currently 5 episodes and an interlude triptych. I'll list each episode separately. I've been obsessed with post Journey's End stories and have read no small number of them. I was delighted to see some of my absolute favorites brought together and reconfigured in this collection to make a seamless whole. Most of the stories can also be found on Teaspoon in their pre-edited form.

Story: Coincidence Makes Sense Only With You by treblebeth, onlylyin, and ljg-fanfic [PG]
Summary: This is the story of the year Rose spent crossing universes.

Reason for recommendation: This story is Episode 1 of Ever/Was. It ties up loose ends and provides the background and missing scenes for much of Season 4. There is a lot here about Rose and what she goes through to get back to her Doctor. The author does an excellent job of showing us a mature Rose who has to make difficult choices. The title is from the Björk song "Joga."

Story: To Find the Journey's End in Every Step of the Road by treblebeth, onlylyin, and ljg-fanfic [PG]
Summary: The continuing story of Rose crossing universes to get to her Doctor - and what happens when she succeeds.

Reason for recommendation: This story is Episode 2 of Ever/Was. It contains brilliant missing scenes from  Season 4. As with the first episode, I highly recommend this story because it ties up loose ends and provides background and missing scenes for the end of Season 4.

Story: Same As It Ever Was by  onlylyin [PG]
Summary: Only the Doctor could leave her and stay with her forever in the same second.

Reason for recommendation: This story is Episode 3 of Ever/Was.  It takes us slightly beyond the end of ( Season 4 ) It is well written, with good characterizations and believable dialog. There's acknowledgment of the difficulty of their situation without getting bogged down in angst. In fact, there's just the right mix of hurt, hope and humor to make an excellent read. 

Story: His Days Like Crazy Paving by ljg-fanfic [R]
Summary: She thought of it as a holiday. A sabbatical. Seeing a bit of the world. Well, seeing a lot of the world in little bitty chaotic never-stay-in-one-place pieces. And it was wonderful. It was.

Reason for recommendation: This story is Episode 4 of Ever/Was. I've never read a better characterization of the Doctor than this. It is brilliant. Without having to get ever-so-explicit, the sex between the Doctor and Rose is hot. I love how in love they are. There are smatterings of angst but the after taste is yummy and funny.

Story: Interlude Triptych by ljg-fanfic [PG-13]
Summary: Three lovely panels from the lives of Rose and the Doctor.

Reason for recommendation: This little interlude follows on the heels of Episode 4 of Ever/Was. Good characterizations and witty dialog, with Rose and the Doctor finding their way together. This is a bit sweeter, lighter and fluffier than previous episodes.

Story: "A Man Who Wasn't There: An Alt!Series 2
Author: Coru (corusca)
Summary: The Doctor survives the Parting of the Ways and continues to adventure with Rose Tyler.
Characters/Pairings: Nine/Rose; the cast of Series 2

Reason for recommendation: I've seen many attempts at re-writing a series, but they usually seem to fall flat. Characterizations often seem quite off, and the plots come off feeling unoriginal. The author, however, has succeeded in writing a alternate Series Two that proves not only to be brilliant and dynamic, but manages to enrich each of the original stories. Nine is not just a stand-in for Ten; he is himself and reacts to the various situations as Nine would. Storylines are changed to take into account the many differences in personality and behavior, and yet every episode is recognizable and wonderful.

Additionally, the author has added Tardisodes between each episode to fill in the missing scenes and quiet moments between adventures. At the moment, the season is only about a third done, but it is well worth reading now.

Story: "Path of Needles"

Summary: Once upon a time, she had abided in the world where lives did not begin with ‘once upon a time.’ No more. Rose walks through the woods. Meanwhile, the Doctor deals with an abundance of Bad Wolf references.

Reason for recommendation: One of the most remarkable and creative reunion stories I've ever read. tardis_stowaway deftly weaves together classic fairy tales and the mythology of Doctor Who with her own lovely characterizations. She just posted the apt and poignant epilogue yesterday, and I felt compelled to rhapsodize over how brilliant "The Path of Needles" is.

Summary: For every Rose/Ten fan, there's an ever-after fic waiting to happen. This is mine. Post Journey's End, Rose and the Doctor in the days hence.

Reason for recommendation: One of the best post-JE fics out there (and yes, I've read just about all of them). SunkenStandard has done a fantastic job portraying  the combination of Nine, Ten and Donna in the new Doctor. Her characterization of Rose and how her time in the alternate universe has changed her is excellent. The story has a wonderful balance of drama, angst, humor and romance and manages to do this without once straying into sappiness or over-the-top melodrama. It's currently at 24 chapters, but it's a fast and utterly enjoyable read, not to mention she updates very quickly!

Story:   "Chaos Theory in Vortex Orbits in Relative Dimensions in Time and Space"  (PG-13)

Summary:  And then there came a day when Rose said she was having a baby.  Hijinks ensue from there.

Warning:  There is some R material in a couple of chapters, overall it's PG-13.
Reason for recommendation:  Because it's simply one of the best D/R "babyfic" out there and even if you normally don't care to read that genre, this is so worth reading.  Yes, it's AU, but the OCs are vividly brought to life.  This story is long (27 chapters total, plus the author is giving us little missing bits here and there that are part of "Chaos!verse") but it is a VERY good read from start to finish.  There is humor, romance, angst, conflict, and above all, love.  I hope the story never ends!

 

Story: Still Lost

Summary: This fic was born out of the idea that being so close to Rose in "Partners in Crime" left some vague impression on the Doctor's brain. It then turned into a sprawling reunion!fic with dream sequences, trips to Cardiff, and Donna as the hero.

Reason for Recommendation: There's good reunion fic out there. There's really good reunion fic out there. But what had me eagerly and obsessively checking for updates on this one is just how well the writer nails Donna as a character and as the catalyst in getting the Doctor and Rose back together. She also knows her canon very well, as the third chapter's dream sequence will show. And now that it's finished, I also love how the author struck a balance between the fluff of reunion and an honest conclusion.

I've been on a binge the last few days with this author and wanted to add to the recommendations she's already received here.

Story: Benumbed (PG)
Summary: He'd only brought her to the planet to enjoy the sights and have a little hot cocoa...

Summary: The Doctor and Rose hunt for an alien mineral that doesn't interact well with humans. As their search progresses, they find out just how dangerous the effects are...

Summary: When one sense fades, the others are said to sharpen. But will that be enough as the Doctor and Rose face a distressing situation?

Reasons for recommending all of the above: If you like fics that essentially feel like episodes that didn't air during series 2, these are your answer. Darcie doens't stray into in-your-face shipping, but shows the very close mutual relationship between the Doctor and Rose, bringing both characters to life very vividly. She's especially fond of the hurt/comfort scenario and puts it to good use. She also rounds out her stories with great original characters. Her plots hang together very well and her writing itself is excellent; I don't remember getting jarred out of the story even once by an awkward turn of phrase or grammatical error.

Summary: Part of Rose's heart pounds, the part not frozen by time and loss and she wonders, inexplicably, if this is it. If it's him.

A wonderfully unexpected reunion fic, evocative language, illustrative, beautifully expressed emotion without being melodramatic or overwrought

Sorry, I meant to post this the other day and completely forgot. *facepalm*

Just wanted to bring something to your attention in reference to tags (and filtering particular recs). Down the right hand side of the comm you'll find the current list of tags. Basically, all the items you put in the Category and Warning fields of your recommendation post have their own tag. So if you're looking for recs with a certain genre, you can click on the listed tag and it's just that bit easier to filter to those particular recs.

As well as the existing tags, I went through on the weekend and created specific author tags (eg *author: honorh). This will help in future so if you're looking for recs of stories by a particular author they'll be easier to find.

One last note regarding certain authors. In most cases, I have used the author's LJ username. This includes those authors from Teaspoon/FF.net who have indicated they have an LJ. An example would be a recent recommendation for Teaspoon user ThroughAnAmberFocus, who's LJ account is amberfocus (as indicated on their Teaspoon user page), therefore the author tag would be *author: amberfocus. If the author doesn't have an LJ account, then I have simply used their Teaspoon/FF.net/whatever author name. Clear as mud? Good. :)

Story: Wolf Moon by ThroughanAmberFocus (Teen)
Summary: Start with one happy, well-adjusted Rose Tyler living her life in the parallel world at age twenty-nine. Add one top of the line TARDIS with an attitude and a relationship problem with one angry, annoyed, crotchety old alternate Doctor who shouldn’t exist but does. Shake well.

Reason for recommendation: If you're a sucker for a good Alt!Nine like I am, this is an absolute must-read. He's even more world-weary than our Nine; he's been on his own longer, and he doesn't even have his own TARDIS. Instead, he's got Romana's, and the two of them have *not* bonded. They're only together because they're the last two survivors of Gallifrey, a situation which pleases neither of them. They chase down a bit of Vortex energy in the form of one Rose Tyler, who thinks she really doesn't need this in her nice, though hardly spectacular, life. Wine is drunk, misunderstandings are begotten, the TARDIS wants to keep Rose, electric shocks are doled out, Nine suggests that perhaps they should mate, and Rose freaks out. And that's just the first five chapters. The author's updating steadily at a rate of a chapter a day, and I have great hopes for this story. The dialogue's fantastic. Enjoy!

I've linked to the entire series of this fic on whofic because it is all wonderful. It's a AU fic with wonderful characterisations of Ten and Rose. A Rose I love and adore and I even managed to get past my revulsion of anyone/thing referring to The Doctor as "Theta" to enjoy this fic (that's in the last fic if you are wondering).

Anyone who enjoys time vortex!rose, a loving adoring ten and a little but of Rose whumpage (a kink I admit to adoring for some strange reason!!!)

I've linked to the entire series of this fic on whofic because it is all wonderful. This fic is awesome. Seriously good characterisations of Nine, Rose and eventually Ten. Shows how much they need each other.

So far there are 5 fics in this series (Voices Airy is currently a WIP) and I could not pick a favourite even if you begged me to.

Like I said Voices Airy is currently a WIP (new chapter every day) and I am constantly refreshing to look for it and then rereading every single fic on the series every chance I get. It's seriously that good.

The write is absolutely brilliant at showing the character emotions, they write so well that at some stages my heart hurts for the characters and I end up crying.

Again, pretty heavy on the whumpage but the author loves the ship so it always end up leaving you feeling all warm and fuzzy.


This is definitely one author I will be watching to see what else they write.

Summary: Four holidays in the life of the Doctor and Rose.

An absolutely beautiful fic, from the character interactions to how the four holidays are used to just the writing itself. orange_crushed has a real gift for lovely, original prose that is full of absolutely gorgeous analogies and images, and her humor is top-notch. As for the characters themselves, well, they're perfectly IC. Basically, after reading this fic (and most any fic by her, really), I guarantee you'll be left with a huge grin on your face and maybe some tears in your eyes.

Story: Do I Twist, Do I Fold by rosa_acicularis (Teen)
Summary: "Will you walk into my parlor?" said the spider to the fly. Rose runs an errand.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Rose and the Master met? Well, they might have during those 18 months (Rose and the Doctor probably arrived on Earth at some point during that time, after all), and this story gives a true, creepy look into what might have happened then, as well as what might have happened if the Doctor ever found out. As with pretty much all of rosa_acicularis's pieces, you can picture the characters in these situations. She really gets everyone down, so while this story is eerie, it also feels very real. And it's just plain awesome.

Story: she falls through holes by biggrstaffbunch (PG)
Summary: "I can see everything. all that is, all that was, all that ever could be." It occurs to Rose that hell is not at all like one would think. [doomsday au]

biggrstaffbunch is yet another one of those authors whose prose feels both fresh and professional. This is a very dark, original, and--again--true look at what might happen to Rose if she ended up in the Void. It addresses her journey as well as the others in her life, what they're thinking and feeling about her life and "death". It's not all roses (uninTENtional pun, I swear! [the "Ten", however, was not]) and daffodils and joy, and this fic is just a lovely peek into that sort of world.

Story: ghost stories by biggrstaffbunch (PG)
Summary: Sequel to she falls through holes. "rose tyler is a ghost." Rose didn't make it to the alternate universe, and the Doctor must deal with the repercussions of what she has gone through. Some things, even time can't change. And sometimes, forever isn't all it's cracked up to be. [post-Doomsday AU]

Reason for Recommendation:
Possibly even darker than its predecessor, this fic is both gorgeous and terrifying. What would months and months in the Void do to you? What would happen if Rose and the Doctor reunited afterward? A hard, IC look at what "forever" might end up meaning, and while providing that insight, this fic flows beautifully and gives an original take on a bunch of concepts.

Story: The Execution of Rose Tyler [R] by tsukara (link is to the final part, links for all three parts included there)
Author's Summary: Rose has the war at Canary Wharf, the Daleks, the Family of Blood, 1969, and the Master's takeover of the Earth, all by the Doctor's side. But her luck, it seems, has run out. Will the Doctor be so willing to forgive the Master now?
Characters/Pairings: Rose/Ten, the Master, Martha

Warnings: Spoilers for The Sound of Drums/The Last of the Time Lords. Character death, pretty gruesome, tough emotional stuff, VERY DARK, AU.

Reason for recommendation: Because of the warnings given, I expect some people have passed this one by. I almost did myself, but the fact that the author is a die-hard shipper made me check it out and I'm glad I did. I'm a wuss when it comes to hard-core angst, but I enjoyed this story. Rose is still with the Doctor during the S3 final arc, and she and Martha escape to Earth together. The story is AU, even beyond those changes, with an established relationship between the Doctor and Rose, but it's an interesting exploration of how things might have been different -- or stayed the same -- for the Doctor if he'd had something else to come back to after the "reset". It's definitely a shipper's story, and despite the description, has a happy ending.

Tis the season to be jolly. I know it's a day late, but here are some sweet and heart-warming Ten/Rose and Nine/Rose fics that I really enjoyed.

Summary: Written for the oh_she_knows ficathon. "I don't want to leave you alone in the dark". One-shot

Reason for Recommendation:
This is so shippy and gorgeous without being fluffy. I am a big fan of fluff, but this brings a smile to me face without going there. The imagery in this is lovely, and she has the characters of Ten and Rose down perfectly.

Story: My True Love Gave to Me-PG-13dettiot. The link goes to the first chapter of four.
Summary: Christmas is a time for getting your heart's desire. Sometimes, the gift you truly want most can't be wrapped in pretty paper and bows. Written for the time_x_space ficathon for waxingobscure

Reason for Recommendation: This was an absolutely wonderful piece of Christmas Fluff. It never goes out of character, but it's warm and lovely and made me smile so man times throughout the entire fic.

Summary: Rose wants to see a real Dickensian Christmas. The Doctor obliges.

I love her Nine voice so much here. This fic was about the true meaning of Christmas, and was so sweet. I learned a little about Charles Dickens, and there are some really hilarious bits of this as well.

The Messenger

Reason for recommendation: It's really unique. I can't say much more. I don't want to give anything away. But I will say, if a sequel comes of this, IT WILL BE WELL WORTH READING.

A Tale of Two Doctors by sensiblecat/catsfiction
Author's Summary: At the end of "Time Crash" the two TARDISes separated and took Five and Ten back to their respective timelines. But something went a bit wrong. The Doctors separated. The TARDIS sort of...cloned. Now Five has Ten's TARDIS, and he's about to find out about the Year that Never Was. But why's he in a parallel world, and who is the girl waiting on the beach?

Reason for recommendation: Just in case there's anyone on this community who hasn't already read this brilliant, amazing fic! No, seriously; you could read it just for the Doctor/Rose reunion, but there is so much more to this story than that. It's not about the reunion. It's about Ten's character growth and development, and it's about him learning to forgive and let go, and about him learning that - as Five says in the story - unconditional love means you're loved despite your flaws. If you've ever wished the Doctor would learn from some of his mistakes (leaving Jack behind, the way he treated the Family, the way he pretended with Rose), then this is the story for you. And, if you love the Fifth Doctor (especially as we saw him in Time Crash), you'll love him even more here. I can't praise this story enough, and I'm finding it very hard to stick to one paragraph to explain why it's the most moving Ten/Rose story I've ever read.

Regrets by Karenbee
Summary at Teaspoon: Post Utopia ficlet, the Doctor and Martha have a much needed chat. Spoilers up till Utopia, but nothing after. (and author's note: Be warned: angst ahead. The Doctor's not exactly nice, but then, he's under a fair amount of stress. No Martha bashing intended or endorsed).

Reason for recommendation: You should read everything she's got up at Teaspoon, but I had to rec this here because it blind-sided me. I don't usually pick up ficlets (especially those with plot!) and wanted to make sure everyone knows this one must be read! She writes Martha and Ten spot on. Martha is feeling sheepish about how she's reacted to the ever-present memory of Rose once she knows the circumstances surrounding Rose's departure. She presses on when really she should be quiet--or perhaps he needs her to press? The Doctor responds. I was moved!
