My first log cabin
Just finished the quilt top. I machine pieced this with carefully cut 1 1/2" strips, and I think if I do this pattern again, I'll foundation piece it like I was supposed to. Or maybe get a real 1/4" foot for my machine, because eyeballing it yields inconsistent results.

I do like the way the color gradations worked out, though. This is using the same batch of fabrics that I used for the "faded fences" rail fence quilt I did a while back.

The yellows are not this orange in real life, and the reds aren't right on the monitor, either.

I'm thinking the next log cabin will use a more traditional pattern than this one. I like the almost infinite variety of patterns you can make with this design, and I know I'm not done playing with them yet.

Oooh, that's really pretty! Log cabin is one of my faborites, but I'd never have thought of doing it like this!
As far as 1/4" seams go, I put a piece of tape on my machine to show me where to line the fabric up. I've got a foot for it and everything, but I think having a long line to compare against helps a lot!

I use tape, too, but I still get that odd piece that is just not right. Also I did all the red/yellow blocks on one day and all the blue/green blocks on another day, and while the finished size is consistent within the color group (within 1/8 inch overall), the red blocks are just bigger than the blue ones. I think my scant 1/4" was less scant the first day than the second.

The block pattern was in the EQ6 database (each block being 1/4 of a square), and I've been playing with color gradations for a while. I think the actual layout was almost an accident, created in EQ6.

I love it! I'm actually going to be doing a "rainbow" log cabin quilt in a few weeks. I have 100 fat quarters of all different colors and a pattern I'm dying to try! Yours is beautiful! Excellent work!

I love it!
The colors you used and the way you chose to layout the blocks.
Very unique.

I really like it! The colors are bright and cheery without being overwhelming.

I love how you did the colors for that! Great job!

How do you plan on quilting it?

I'm not sure. The quilting bit is where I tend to fall short. I am using a Singer machine with a very shallow arm for quilting.

If you have any suggestions, I'm all ears!

Pretty! My next project is going to be a log cabin, because I've never made one, and our quilt group is doing a "make any pattern you like, as long as it's red, white, and blue, and lap size." I think that's good for a pattern I haven't done before, because it's big enough so that I can get the feel for the pattern, but not overwhelming.

Really great looking! I just finished my first quilt. Is that a design wall? I need to really figure out how to put one up...

yes, that's a design wall. It's made of a large piece of masonite, covered with a flannel sheet (fitted) with duct tape on the back to keep it tight (the queen-sized sheet set was cheaper than purchasing fabric would have been. Go figure). Brass brackets that have been bent over into hook shapes hold it up on the wall. I can take it down and turn it 90 degrees if I want to.
