I need to find an organization in BC that advances the rights of intersexed persons. My intent to build bridges between intersexed and transgendered activists. Failing that, I would like to find one elsewhere in Canada - or heck, even in Washington.
Any recommendations?

| Volunteering for Vancouver Pride! |
[08 Jul 2009|09:54am] |
Hey everyone!I just wanted to let you all know that It's not too late to sign up to volunteer for Vancouver Pride 2009; we are still accepting volunteers for a few events, including the Pride Parade and Festival, August 2nd. I wanted to make sure the word gets out to everyone in the community, so that no one misses the chance to be a part of this. Sign up sooner than later to get the shifts you want; last year we filled up fast and we anticipate the same to happen for this year. Just this week we implemented a new system where you sign up, get your very own login, and then from there you can sign up for the exact events, shifts, and positions you want... immediately! Absolutely no waiting to be scheduled. You can then view your shifts online any time, instead of waiting for an email. You can either go to www.vancouverpride.ca and look for the volunteer page, or take this shortcut: http://web.volunteer2.com/public/organization/listjobs.aspx?OrganizationGUID=c37d4207-7d2c-4b24-8d55-6c29226b561f&AppForm=1Just click on "I would like to volunteer for this organization" and take it from there! Remember, ANYONE can volunteer. You don't have to be GLBTQ, etc, etc. I get that question a lot =)

| SM 101 CANCELLED Friday May 1st |
[30 Apr 2009|06:57pm] |
SM 101: The ABCs CANCELLED Friday May 1st Please excuse the late notice. We have just learned that Youthco will be closed from Friday night through the weekend. An exterminator will be fumigating the building early Friday evening, and while both the presenter, Reive Doig, and Kink 101 Presents are fans of breath control, attending a seminar in a toxic environment probably isn’t the safest introduction to it. The workshop will be rescheduled at the earliest opportunity. To learn more about the rescheduling, or about other Kink 101 Presents seminars you can email the organizer and/or join his mailing list by emailing the organizer Ilya at at jaoman@shaw.ca Upcoming Kink 101 Presents Seminars Friday June 12 Impact Play 101 presented by Zorklunn Friday July 10 Scene Communication presented by Dr. Pega Ren

| SM 101 Seminar: Friday May 1, Vancouver |
[29 Apr 2009|06:51pm] |
Kink 101 Presents is pleased to be offering SM 101: The ABCs presented by Reive Doig, best known in Vancouver’s SM Scene as a founder of BIO Events which put on the Vancouver Dungeon Parties and many other kinky events and seminars.
SM 101: The ABCs (Absolute Beginner’s Concepts) Presented by Reive Doig When: Friday May 1st Duration: 7:30pm to 9:00/9:30pm Where: YouthCO Aids Society at 900 Helmcken Street, Vancouver Cost: $10
Try building a house without a foundation. Try planting a tree without roots. Try doing a somersault without practice. Most will agree, the fundamentals are essential to doing anything. Sadomasochism, or SM, is no exception. Kink101 presents a workshop on the basic elements of consensual SM. This workshop will cover what you need to know to begin exploring your kinky side. From communication and safety issues to the basic techniques behind many sorts of play. We’ll also look at resources you can avail yourself of, local, in print and online, to further your explorations.
This workshop is planned to last 90 minutes, with 30 minutes reserved for questions at the end.
SM 101: The ABCs can be looked on as the introduction to the Kink 101 Presents book. We’re hope that after seeing this seminar you’ll want to read on… Reive Doig has been a member of Vancouver’s BDSM community for over 15 years, and a respected one on and off throughout that time. His new company That SMarts offers consulting on kink and sexuality issues to the film and television industry, as well as staging the annual Halloween Ghost Ship cruise. He was previously a founding partner in BIO Events which put on kinky happenings includingVancouver Dungeon, Cirque de Sade fetish nights, and The Conference of Kink. Upcoming Kink 101 Presents Seminars Friday June 12 Impact Play 101 presented by Zorklunn. Friday July 10 Scene Communication presented by Dr. Pega Ren. If you’ve got any questions about this seminar, or any other workshops in the Kink 101 series or if you would like to reserve a couch seat for this workshop, please email the organizer Ilya of Kink 101 (not That SMarts) at jaoman@shaw.ca

| Looking for friends in Vancouver, BC |
[26 Apr 2009|03:53am] |
|
My wife is Egyptian / Canadian, and I am an American working towards living here with my beautiful wife. As she has just moved from Egypt and I have just moved from the US we don`t know anybody up here. We would like to hopefully meet other lesbian couples that like to hang out watch movies, go for coffee, museums, occasionally out on the weekend clubbing or what not. Mostly random stuff though we do tend to be the bit of homebodies at this time. My wife is a writer who recently got her coming out story in Xtra West. I am a bit of an artist and I also like to write, while doing some work making icons. We are looking to meet some nice lesbian couples to have as friends. So let me know if you are looking for the same and we can get to know each other. I am looking forward to meeting some nice people. Thank you.

| Mayhem conference May 8-10: POC+ Allies caucus! |
[20 Apr 2009|03:12am] |
Are you at Mayhem? http://www.canadianmayhem.com Were you thinking about it but not sure because it's been enough coming out as queer and now what?! Kinky.... Well, lucky you! ... There's still time to join other newbies, rookies and wallflowers making there way to Mayhem.... No, you don't have to be at the play party... you've got sessions for sitting in community and learning... I mean really when last did Vancouver have a conference for queer women and transfolk connected to the women's community about sex?! If you are coming... and you've got time for a caucus or two or three... http://canadianmayhem.com/whattodo/other-events/caucuses Consider the POC + Allies Caucus! I am pleased to invite EVERYONE attending Mayhem to come by the hour long session for People of Colour and Allies. Schedule announcement during the conference times. Who's welcome?: Everyone! This session will be supported by a few folks attending the conference - to name just two: Rope Wolf (presenter of the Erotic Dominance D/s 24-7 workshop) http://canadianmayhem.com/presenters/rope-wolf Lamalani (IMSL 2009) http://www.internationalmsleather.com/ What is it?: People of colour have been in Leather for a long time. Coming out and taking care of our growth while negotiating in multiple communities: queer, kinky, female-bodied and of colour. Navigating the hills and valleys of our leather walk both privately and publicly. It's gonna be a fresh caucus that doesn't happen too often on the North American Leather conference circuit. Be in on it! It's just the right spot for you if catch yourself thinkin': "I'm of colour. I got kinky thoughts.I don't know what to do with them!" or "I'm not white and woah I don't often talk about being of colour and kinky in the same conversation!" or "I think I am the only kinkster of colour in the town most days" or "My partner is of colour and sometimes I feel like I don't really get her side of the experience and how the interracial part of our relations impacts our relationship in either direction" or "How comes it seems like there's so many stunning people of colour in town - but not at the play parties?!" This space is POC-focused with room for partners and allies. It's quite possible it will be useful to witness if you feel some part of your identity has been hyper-visible and invisible at the same time while navigating the world of kink. It will surely be useful if you are brand new on the scene looking for some more personal story-telling on entering the Leather community beyond the Newbies/Kink 101 caucus. See you there right?! Right! And hey! Pass the word on!

| Zine Collaboration |
[06 Mar 2009|01:45pm] |
I have been wanting to put together a zine for awhile now and am looking to work with some other queer writers. I have a few zine ideas, including doing one about femme on femme relationships, as well as one about fat queer vancouver identities and gender queer androgyny. I know Vancouver has a lot of amazing writers, so i'm hoping to work with some of them and put together an amazing zine. I am also looking for photographers who want to contribute or maybe work on something else, as i'm always willing to model for any sort of queer themed project and or help behind the scenes. So if you are one of those talented people who have something you want to say or show the world your images, or know anyone else who does, email me at chasing.pavements14@gmail.com thanks! kat

| I Support Mirror Image |
[19 Feb 2009|12:11pm] |
I hope this is allowed, if not, feel free to delete or tell me to delete. My friend over in Nova Scotia is organizing this amazing cause. It's not BC related but it's Canada Trans related so I thought maybe some of you guys would want to show your support. I know I am, even all the way over in BC :)
-------
Transsexualism is a rare condition where a person's gender does not match their sex. Many of these individuals seek treatments such as life long hormone replacement as well as several surgeries, so they may live normal and happy lives. This is a very expensive process, and is not currently covered in Nova Scotia, despite being covered in several other provinces across Canada.
Born from love, Mirror Image is one of the first of its kind. Produced by Your Mother's Moustache, we held the first show in June of 2008, raising over $700 in support of a transgendered friend's surgery, as well as $200 towards the Lulu LaRude Scholarship Fund. Due to the great success we received, we continue to raise money for other transgendered individuals. Through all of this not only are we raising money, we're raising awareness for this very important issue.
Among various acts, such as live music and burlesque, we also host the only reverse drag shows in town. Mirror Image is not "just another drag show." We mix up the rules and gender-fuck your mind. Kings, Queens, and inbetweens unite on the stage for this amazing cause, but with a twist. The Queens perform as Kings and the Kings perform as Queens. It's not as easy as it sounds. They have to go out of their element and push to the extremes in performance.
This year we're running a much bigger show in an effort to cover the full cost of our recipient's top surgery. Eureka Love and Lanti Steele will be hosting our second installment of Mirror Image, our main fundraising event, Saturday, March 7th, at 9pm at the Bus Stop Theatre!
Come see an amazing and unique array of entertainment featuring burlesque, drag performances, and our special guest, Lucas Silveira of the Cliks! Lucas is a transgendered Canadian musician, and is currently on tour with Cyndi Lauper!
This is an all-ages event. There will be carnival games, food catered by chef Richard Sanford, and a silent auction full of fun goodies. All of the proceeds are going to Kris Figueroa to help him cover his upcoming chest surgery. Kris is an active member of the community, sitting on both the Pride Committee and the Youth Board of the Youth Project, Halifax's GLBT youth centre. With all the hard work he does for us, what better way to show our appreciation than to give back!
A dollar from each ticket is going to Bus Stop Theatre, our local indie theatre. Tickets are limited and are only available in advance. They and can be purchased in downtown Halifax at Venus Envy, 1598 Barrington Street, and Pretty Things Boutique, 5685 Cunard Street. If you are not able to access either location you can purchase a ticket or donate to The Mirror Image Foundation via email money transfer:
( donation info ) Thank you so much for your time! If you have any questions, or would simply like to know more about the event and organization, please don't hesitate to e-mail me.
