Day of Silence - Friday 25th May [Apr. 21st, 2008|10:47 pm]

purple_bug
"The Day of Silence (www.dayofsilence.org), a project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), is a student-led day of action when concerned students, from middle school to college, take some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to the name-calling, bullying and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) students and their allies. This year’s Day of Silence will be held in memory of Lawrence King."

media times three (questions) [Nov. 4th, 2007|06:11 pm]

[mood |dizzy]

Do you remember the first positive portrayal you encountered of queer folk in books, movies, or other media?
I've been thinking about this lately, trying to remember any exposure at all to the culture in my own childhood, and there isn't much to recall. When Will & Grace first began I remember feeling thrills of excitement--though I didn't know why I had that reaction--that there was going to be a show with gay people in it.
Do you have any first happy stories of recognizing yourself in the media?

Also, several questions about books cross-posted from [info]queergirlsbooks:
I'm looking for several different recommendations. Can anyone point me to fiction they've enjoyed where a main character is bisexual (and not portrayed stereotypically)? I've found several lists of bi characters in literature, but they haven't been very helpful.
Also, I know there must be a good number of novels and histories that take place in/ focus on queer women in the U.S. midwest and Great Plains, but I'm not certain how to find them. Do you know of any titles I should look for? Anything set in a predominantly rural region would be of interest to me as well.
Thanks for any help!

Something we can do to get marraige recognition [Sep. 13th, 2007|02:32 am]

taraxoxo
The current lack of legal recognition for same-sex couples truly is one of the biggest social failures of our time. The fight to gain such recognition worldwide is an important struggle, I believe. But there is another even more important struggle - the struggle to make same-sex commitments work, work better than straight commitments. We don't want to serial-date after we are ready to settle down, we don't want to have abuse and hurt amongst couples in our community, and we would provide the best for our children, and provide them with what it truly means to be loving of everyone. And then the whole world would see the value of our commitments.

assumptions about mental illness [Aug. 21st, 2007|07:17 pm]

brassdaughter
Hello, all.
This is a somewhat random queery (heh--sorry). I have a (relatively long) history with severe depression and anxiety, for which I've finally been in effective treatment for about a year and a half. My latest batch of counselors are wonderful, and I wouldn't want to imply ignorance or indifference on their part. But.
I'm tired of the assumption that my mental illness is entirely rooted in having to deal with such a queerphobic society. My own sense of being painfully different, before I even knew why, and coming to terms with myself in spite of the broiling mess of religion and bigotry that is rural Nebraska--these things have certainly exacerbated any already iffy situations. But they didn't create them, not entirely.
So, the question. If you've been in a similar situation before, did you find it (the assumption) offensive, or partially accurate? Do you feel there are problems similar to mental illness that for you have been caused entirely by reacting to bigotry?

...
Meant to write more, but we're in a tornado warning and I gotta run. Cheers!

Per the results of the recent poll, advertising posts such as [info]perkyfreak29 requested will be permitted provided that they plausibly have some interest to the community's membership and don't contain embedded graphics/Flash crud/other annoying stuff and there aren't excessively many of them.

In a recent post, [info]perkyfreak29 asked whether it was permitted to promote events in this community. Since the issue hasn't come up before, I thought I'd post a poll to see what the membership's thoughts on the matter are.

Poll #970772

Should people be allowed to advertise events in this community?

Hello [Apr. 20th, 2007|01:47 pm]

perkyfreak29
Just wanted to pop in and say hello.  I noticed that some of my friends were members of this community so I decided to join so just in case drama started back up in [info]lesbian I would have one place of sanity to go to.

I am 24, living in Washington DC spending my days entering numbers and junk and spending my free time performing as Bambi Galore.  I do burlesque, and love it.  I identify as a lesbian identified bisexual even though I know I will be marrying a woman.  I am engaged to a wonderful woman named Heidi.  She full supports me in my performing and, not to sound incredibly cheese ball, is the light of my life.

I am fortunate enough to have a supportive family.  I live completely outside of the closet.  I am a proponent for PDA.  Mainly because I live under the theory that unless feel like it is normal they will never view us as normal.  I find that because Heidi and I don't make a deal about holding hands and kissing in public, no one around us does either.

So I have to ask, are there any other girls in the DC metro area?  I also wnat to know from the mods, are we allowed to promote events and such on here?

I ask because I am planning to compete in Miss Capital Pride this year.  Lesbians always get pushed to the side but explain to me why Ms. Pride has to be a drag queen (now mind you I love drag queens, not hating).  But if I can promote my shows and the competition, you bet my sweet ass I will.

Ok, now that I've writen a small novella I think I might as well show you what I look like since yo uwere so kind to read it all.

"Partial-birth" abortion ban [Apr. 18th, 2007|05:01 pm]

personcalledamy
The Supreme Court voted "to uphold the Bush Administration 2003 “partial-birth” abortion ban, which affects certain abortion procedures as early as the 12th week of pregnancy and contains no exception at all for women’s health. This limiting of abortion rights is clearly unconstitutional as defined by Roe and Casey." [via]

Background on the ban
Why it's important

Btw, it seems to be getting minimal coverage from mass media. (I can only say that second hand since I don't have ze cable.) I can say that CNN's story erroneously starts by describing the bill as banning "a type of late-term abortion".

Avoidance [Apr. 14th, 2007|03:55 pm]

So I am in the library avoiding my roommate. Just thought this would be a good time to share with you all :-)

I have a new someone. Her name is Alexis. She is fucking amazing. She and I connect on this level that I have never experienced before. I have tried countless times to explain how she makes me feel in my personal journal and I haven't really been able to. She's beautiful and funny and incredibly intelligent. She is amazed by me and I am amazed by her and we are covering new territory and breaking boundaries and it is amazing.

That is all :-)

Feelings, on the recent slams on women in sports [Apr. 10th, 2007|09:28 am]

snwleop
[mood | pissed off]

WFAN radio station personality Don Imus hit a new low this week with his public remarks about the Rutger University Women's Basketball Team, who lost the National Championship to Tennessee on April 3rd. He referred to the team members as "nappy headed ho's" during a public radio broadcast, and his remarks have been condemned by WFAN, MSNBC, and the Rev. Al Sharpton, who is leading a campaign to force the firing of Imus from WFAN.

This echoes a similar experience I had this past Thursday while listening to the WLVQ morning show out of Columbus Ohio, where the Sports Director made some disparaging remarks while discussing the previous day's WNBA Draft. He was commenting on the #2 pick Jessica Davenport being traded to the NY Liberty in exchange for Becky Hammon, and then went on to discuss the #1 pick, Lindsey Harding. He stated, and I quote, that she was "traded to the Minnesota Lynx in exchange for an Indigo Girls CD and a bright red strap-on"......I could hardly believe my ears! Did he really just say that on public radio?? My mouth just dropped open and stayed that way, while the other morning DJ's just hee-hawed like it was the funniest thing they had ever heard! I am outraged at the way these DJ's are allowed to make such biased remarks about women athletes, especially considering their exemplary behavior and reputation as compared to many male athletes, whose felony charges, drug addictions, and other unsavory personal issues are swept aside in lieu of big money endorsements, fame, and public adoration. Women athletes have come a long way, mostly thanks to the benefits of Title IX, but we still have a long way to go towards gender equality!

gay mardi gras [Apr. 2nd, 2007|05:08 pm]

candinadian
hey all...i have a question for you. i am a part of my university's lgbt awareness organization (running for president *fingers crossed*) and we are host a lot of programming during the week of the national Day of Silence (April 18th). we want to have, what we call a gay mardi gras, more like a fun, interactive room with lots of stations for people to stop at, do activities, learn, eat, etc...like an educational carnival. i was wondering if any of you fabulous members had any ideas for activities we can do. so far we have...a cute documentary playing on one side and a bake sale and a some other half baked ideas (like spin art and then make a collage of everyone's different expression, some sort of workshop like whose line is it anyway with oppression/glbt awareness themes)...any ideas? thanks so much!

x-posted everywhere

*edit...*catholic* university with very very small (20 people) glbt community, more trying to bring in straight folk to show the administration that we are supported by the general populus and to educate them.

scared [Apr. 2nd, 2007|02:20 pm]

frecklesdance
so, after a long and painful journey this past month or so, i think i have come to the conclusion that i just may be flat out lesbian.  slowly guys are fading out of my life, and some that i push out, because i can not be anything more than friends with them. i have been hanging out with a lot more lesbian girls at my school, and this has helped me realize that i am not really interested in guys anymore.  although i havent done a whole lot with girls (just barely past making out) i still feel infinitely more comfortable and sexual with them.

and this really really scares me.

its like i am just figuring out the truth about myself.  i guess better now than never...
