Fred Phelps at EMU
Just received this email...
Dear Community,
Eastern Michigan University (EMU) was just notified that Fred Phelp, Minister of the Westboro Baptist Church and owner of the GodHatesFags.com website, will be protesting on Friday, May 9th at 12noon against a student organization that allegedly promotes the sodomite agenda. Though EMU supports Free Speech and various forms of opinions, this protest goes against EMU’s values and creed. Therefore EMU would like to use this event to show our solidarity against hate, exclusion and bigotry. Kate Brindle, Program Coordinator of the LGBTRC, and Dan Burns, Chair of the LGBTRC Advisory Committee, will each pledge $2.00 for every minute Members of the Westboro Baptist Church are protesting on EMU’s campus to raise money for the LGBT Emergency Fund which provides financial assistance for EMU students who encounter immediate financial hardship do to issues surrounding sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. In promoting inclusion and acceptance, Kate and Dan invite you to consider donating using the Pledge Form. (http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?k ey=p6iEihoV53KGmpS1zcgh7Zg).
If you would like to join us on EMU’s campus, please do not engage in violent ways or angry reactions. Be mindful he engages in spiritual abuse against LGBT people and their allies. After their protest we encourage our community to assist us in washing the area of hate, bigotry, and exclusion with soapy water, mops, and brooms.
Peace,
Dan Burns and Kate Brindle
