Nikoli - ever the puzzle altruists - have done something very special indeed for the final month of their Puzzle Japan web service: opened it to the public free of charge. Just visit the Puzzle Japan login page and use "pj" as both login and password as directed. Their daily puzzles through to the end of the month will be available as they are published, and their entire backlog of time-trial puzzles (typically their hardest) and special problems through the entire history of the site is playable as well for the whole month. So what are you waiting for - go solve some puzzles! - ZM

Hello all. I'm new here.
I've got a problem.
This question is part of a series of questions, and ther are no directions for how to solve it. I've tried number substitution with no luck, I've tried solving it like a rebus with no luck. I know what the two words mean and their latin derivitives, but this sheds no light on the problem either. Can anyone here help me? Thanks in advance to anyone here that offers any helps.
It goes like this:
VOMER
+ COVEN --------------------

I have recently discovered sudoku. I really like this puzzle even though I was innitially turned off by the fact it has numbers and I am not good at math (I thought it was one of those fill in so that every line has the same sum) Since I have comcast internet, I get free games every few weeks and sudoku is one of the new ones. If you have not tried this logic puzzle before, and like elimination logic...you'll like it and should look for a site to play it.

I apologize for this in advance:
all the puzzles in my LiveJournal
I post new puzzles on a semiregular basis. All are my original compositions, and some are even original designs. I've also started contests (I have a separate "contests" tag from the "puzzles" tag). I'll try to make up for my puzzle inundation by being as helpful here with other puzzles as I can. - ZM

Hello. I'm new to this community, and I need some help. If this isn't allowed, please let me know. :) But I'm doing this word puzzle thing that comes in the Parade magazine in my newspaper every sunday. This lady Marilyn (who is the woman with the highest IQ in the world) is running a contest for teens, and each week she gives us a clue, and we have to figure out a letter, then put the circled letter from each word together, to make the final answer. It's kind of like a word jumble, but instead of just giving you the word, they give you a clue, and you have to find the word. And she tells you what section of the newspaper it comes from, like business, weather, sports, whatever. Here's the website if you'd like to take a look. http://www.parade.com/clues/
But I'm here to ask for your help. So here it is. The capital letters in "My answer" are the ones that will make the final word in the end.
Clue #1 News section: All sections Clue: You find them on every page of the newspaper. My answer- Words
(all the answers are 5 letter words)
Clue #2 News sections: Weather Section Clue: The moon is always in one. My answer- phasE
Clue #3 News section: The business and or style section. Clue: Some people follow one; others create one. My answer- treNd
Clue #4 News section: The entertainment section. Clue: Some say they predict the future; in big cities, you can see them mainly in the movies. My answer- stArs
Clue #5 News section: The sports section Clue: Your favorite team never wins without one. My answer- cOach
And here's the final clue---
What you might do when you read some really great news.
So for letters I've got w,e,n,a, and o. Obviously one or more of my answers are wrong, and this is where I need your help. It would be greatly appreciated. If you have questions, feel free to ask. Thank you <3

Okay, thank everyone for their help with this. My physics prof finally told me the answer to what JAREPAN means. Hopefully it won't make you groan too much.
If you are looking for the answer to President Rajiv's question you are S.O.L... PWNED!

Hi, I'm new to the community, but I have a riddle that my physics prof. gave for fun, and refuses to give the answer to until the last day of class. It has been quite aggrivating. "JAREPAN". It's one of those riddles like "insult + injury" becomes "add insult to injury" and "LOV" becomes "endless love". I have no idea what JAREPAN means... Any help would be much appreciated, and if I ever find the answer, it will be posted on here lickity split!

BELIEVE IN Santa Claus that is. Well good ole science question of the week brought these few tibits to my attention.
Some facts about Santa Claus
No known species of reindeer can fly. But there are 300,000 species of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are insects and germs, this does not completely rule out flying reindeer, which only Santa has ever seen.
There are 2 billion children in the world (persons under 18). But since Santa doesn't (appear to) handle Muslim, Hindu, Jewish, or Buddhist children, that reduces the workload by 85% of the total--leaving 378 million according to the Population Reference Bureau. At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One presumes there is at least one good child per house.
Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west (which seems logical). This works out to 822.6 visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian household with good children, Santa has 1/1000th of a second to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down the chimney, fill the stocking, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left, get back up the chimney, get back into the sleigh and move on to the next house.
Assuming that each of these 91.8 million stops are evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false but for the purposes of our calculations we will accept), we are now talking about 0.78 miles per household, a total trip of 75.5 million miles, not counting stops to do what most of us do at least once every 31 hours, plus feeding, etc. That means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second, 3000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man-made vehicle on earth, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second - a conventional reindeer can run, at tops 25-30 miles per hour.
The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming each child gets nothing more then a medium sized LEGO set (2 lbs), the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not counting Santa, who is invariably described as overweight. On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds. Even granting the "flying reindeer" can pull TEN TIMES that normal amount, we cannot do the job with eight, or even nine--we need 214,200 reindeer. This increased the payload--not even counting the weight of the sleigh--to 353,430 tons. Again for comparison, this is four times the weight of the HMS Queen Elizabeth.
353,000 tons travelling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance. This will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as spacecrafts re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy per second, each. In short, they will burst into flames almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them, and creating a deafening sonic boom in their wake. The entire reindeer team will be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second. Santa meanwhile, will be subject to centrifugal forces of 17,500.06 times greater than gravity. A 250 lb. Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of the sleigh by a 4,315,015 pound force. In conclusion, if Santa ever DID deliver presents on Christmas eve, he's now dead.
Indeed there ONCE was a Santa but after he exploded in less than a thousandth of a second who in their right mind would ever take his place?
this list is credited to our good friend Don Jolley, Thanks Don for Handling the TRUTH!
